Powering portable radios for POTA and SOTA is a major consideration. There is a YT vid that shows the FT-991A pulling 1.6Ah in receive only, and some of the competitors are less than 1Ah.
Add to that the temptation to use up to 100W, or even forgetting to lower the power when you don't need it and you find your battery is depleted in half the time... or you are carrying a battery twice the size/weight or more or adding a solar panel in order to compensate.
For home use the FT991A is a convenient small package (that is less intrusive from Wife's perspective), packing a punch and a great all-rounder... Not had mine long but I'm loving it.

Icom needs to take the 705 idea (the display/menus), and make it a mobile 100w all-mode/all-band like the 7100.

As a guy who isn’t the most serious about a full time hobby, but I have a tower on my property and also wanna take something to my cabin and throw a wire out or yap at some buddies across the county on vhf/uhf or my neighbors tractor on cb. A 100w 705 would be exactly what I want.

@@shockashoota I really want something like an updated 7000 // 7100 // 706mk2g. Its a market that seems to be somewhat empty.
the 7300 is just a bit too big to fit in a vehicle dashboard environment, let alone the fact it doesn't do VHF. I want something that I can use in mobile, but take out and use on a desk. Icom really needs to bring back the "shack in a box" -- with today's modern chips and software it shouldn't be hard nor that expensive. Yaesu has the FT-991a, but I've always been more of an Icom guy.

It’s really refreshing to watch an unbiased and opened minded video regarding radios. My shack-in-the-box is my IC-705 for it’s simplicity and my current portable needs and I use it wirelessly with my Surface Pro 5. (Think OH8STN for my operating style). I also like the fact that it has self-contained power without the need to drag along an external battery, unless it’s a lightweight unit like PowerFilm’s Light Saver Max. It’s true that the sacrifice in this setup is the lack of transmitting power compared to a 100W radio, but more powerful radios will demand more from an external power source. There are portable amps that will work with the IC-705, which are both lightweight and conservative on power consumption, and I will likely pick one of these devices up in the near future for a well rounded portable setup.
I chuckled at your comments at 8:00 - 8:15 regarding the IC-9700. I have both the IC-7300 and the IC-9700 and you are correct that they look good together and make for a great shack setup. However, I wouldn’t really say that I have money to burn. 😉 Some people may read this and think that I am an ICOM fanboy, and that may be true in regard to base radios because the ICOM line appeals more to me. My mobile and HT radios are Yaesu because their line of radios for these purposes shines over ICOM in my opinion. In the end, I’m just having fun with the hobby and you earned a new subscriber.

Bill-N6EF-I used my FT-857D as my main shack radio for many years. I worked a lot of contest contacts with the '857. It's now my portable radio setup in a Harbor Freight case I use for POTA. I now have the IC-7300 as my main shack radio. Making a box for it for Field Day.

Good and honest video! I own both ICOM HT radios and Yaesu. I have 2 older ICF21 HT units that I bought almost 20 years ago and still operate like brand new and never had any issues. When it came time for choosing a base station radio, I went back and forth between ICOM and Yaesu and I just couldn't resist what the FT991A had to offer and the winner for me was Yaesu. Been very happy with it.
    Thanks,

You're hitting the point! I've been always surprised how little people care about VHF SSB/CW operation. I've always been into shack-in-the-box solutions like you, exactly because of the same -- lack of 2m/70cm allmode rigs. They all are very old veterans, such as FT-290, etc. Nothing modern on the market, so one needs to go for an allbander due to that. I've started with portable FT-818 (for me a portable means mostly hiking), then FT-991A for shack or car-portable and VHF contesting (in Europe, we have quite plenty VHF contest activity), now I moved to IC-705 and for shack, I've added IC-7300 thinking of selling FT-991A, but I simply can't, I'd miss it! :-)
Twins would be still too expensive, since IC-9700 is 1.5 times more than FT-991A. FT-991A is nice and versatile, however, I see the big difference between waterfall capabilities of IC-7300 and FT-991A, way much better on the Icom.

The reason people say that shack in the box radios aren’t as good, is because when you compare them to HF only radios the receiver isn’t as good on the all band rigs. I’ve seen a video that proved it. Both radios on the same antenna the HF only radios either heard what the FT991A didn’t or the 991A didn’t hear it as good.

Hello Chuck, I'm a new ham and it's frustrating to not see any new 2M SSB standalone radios that are portable. 2M FM and sideband is an area of great interest to me, but the radio selection is limited as you've said. I've looked at/for a 857D but people have Ferrari prices on them and most need repairs. I know the 857D is technically a shack in the box but I really like the small form factor for portable use for 2M sideband. I do really like the 991A, which is what I will more than likely purchase as my radio fund builds. (Our central A/C and heat died 2 weeks ago, so there went my radio fund plus more. Along with my daily drivers engine locking up, so no rigs for me anytime soon) I digress, It would be nice to have a IC7610 or a FTDX101D along with a IC9700 but for me the 991A fits the bill for lots of areas. Great video and thanks for making all the other videos, looking forward to more. 73's Mike W5SKK
BTW, anyone that has a spare 857D, I would be a willing recipient of a donation. 😁

I started my Shack in a box in 2017. The box set empty until this year. With things going the way they are I decided that now is the time for this build. More of a EMMCOM for emergency use if my family and others had to more to a more secure area. So with that, my GoBox contains my Yaesu 991, RadioIddity CB-27 and DB25-G (GMRS). It contains my MFJ 939 Tuner, Switching power supply, Power Gate, Solar Controller etc. All this in a Gator 4U.

The 7100 has a scope in the same vein that the 891 does. It does not have a waterfall and on both the 891 and 7100 scopes are useless. I got the 7100 because it has the removable head and is great mobile. Also it was considerably cheaper when I bought it. About $750 new. The other thing about the 7100 is that it has a GPS connection on the back that gives you the big advantage of having repeater look up based on your location. The 9700 has 1.2G not 220. I have a 220 all mode via Transverter. Transverters are another option for side band on a lot of radios.

The 857 scope isn't very good but it is probably the most portable 100 watt radio that has been produced and the head ie removable also. I looked briefly at the 9700 and remembered one of the bands had a 2 in it lol1.2. I know the 991 has a GPS hook up not sure if it will do the same as 7100, in the end all the radios I mentioned are good radios and all are better at certain things. @@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures The GPS on the 7100 probably functions a bit differently than it does on the 991A. The Fusion radios just don't take advantage of the way the Icoms do with D-Star. I have mine set to 3.2k and it would put out 2/3 of my signal on lower side band and 1/3 ish went on to the upper 😳 I think when you incorporate a shack in a box you loose sum on each, over a tx/rx dedicated to a Hf/vhf/uhf. Loved it though but I like my ftdx10 so much more. Another great video👍 thanks for the plug👍👍👍
Here’s some questions that some people ask me…
If 2 m is dead in a area why is it dead???
What can we do to wake up 2Meters
Horizontal or vertical for 2 m SSB ?
    Is horizontal that much better???

Well I think you prove every time you go out that 2m and 6m isn't dead people just need to try more. I like that you show that!

One could always use CP to be instantly interoperable with both vertical and horizontal stations, at the negligible cost of a -3dB penalty.

Chris I meant what I said love you channel and wish you still had that first part of you intro in the new one. Of all the YT'ers you seem to like all radios and not brand specific and thats great! When 10m really gets back we will have to cross the pond for sure!!!

I have a tyt9800 quad band 10/6/2/70 50 watt But FM ONLY . If it did SSB I could live with that and a 5 or 10w DMR hand held. But no one makes that quad band 50w base station with SSB.

You said "all band" several times when I think you meant "all mode".
