Super Smash Bros. Melee: Adventure Mode (Normal) with Mario in HD

- Just a casual Adventure Mode playthrough. This video is designed to show off the "full experience" of Super Smash Bros. Melee's flagship single player mode that's captured our collective imaginations for over 20 years now.

Since another video is in the works, I decided to use the footage I'm capturing for it and make this. I have the Melee HD textures enabled (from assets.melee.tv), widescreen gecko code, and an internal resolution upscale of 1920x1584 for full 1080p capture. I also enabled 8x SSAA anti-aliasing, 16x anisotropic filtering, texture filtering, per-pixel lighting, and scaled EFB copy to make it as pretty as possible.
I did cheat a little bit in editing, so that RNG was on my side. List of things I changed:
- Swapped out the Mario Bros. cutscene with one that doesn't use any recolor costumes (happens when you pick Mario or Luigi)
- Replaced the Star Fox segment to ensure an encounter with Falco
- Replaced the Kirby section to ensure an encounter with Giant Kirby
- Replaced the Ending "Congratulations" segment with my own HD version
I also went out of my way to engage each of the Link battles in Underground Maze, and also waited for Zelda to transform into Sheik before I KO'd her. Yes, it was a little extra, but I wanted to show as much off as I could.
Unfortunately there are some odd quirks with the widescreen gecko code that haven't been fixed yet, mostly obvious in the text alignment and UI issues that show up during the stage clear screens or during the Star Fox cutscenes.

If anyone knows of a widescreen code that fixes these issues, please let me know. :)
The other issue is, when having all of those visual settings cranked up super high, there are some serious performance issues during the stage clear screens. I replaced the audio with smoother versions so it doesn't sound choppy, but the video visibly drops frames during those parts. Sorry about that.

I hope you enjoy this casual playthrough of Adventure Mode! I wanted to include every bit of it, so I did some video editing to combine segments together, which is why you might notice some weirdness in the score totals.

Roy is my main for Adventure Mode.
He’s one of my favourite fighters in Melee. And KOing all enemies to get bonus points with Roy really hits them hard.
Proof that you don't need high poly models to have a good looking game
Melee is like the flagship example of that!
This might be my favorite art style of all the smash games. Nice solid and smooth colors. Kinda realistic but cartoony mixed well together.

i don't even know why people thought the graphics were "just good" back in the day, even considering they were running on the Gamecube (and funny enough, this _was_ hi-poly back in its day). to me, they were always stunning and full of detail (and even considering how Ultimate finally took those stages to the next level, that opinion hasn't changed), even though i prefer how the characters look in later games (especially the Mario characters, they look kinda off to me here).
Nope; You don't have to high poly models to have a great video game!

Dude this literally sparked the memory of my first time playing melee. I got it for a birthday and had no clue wtf smash bros was. I just saw Mario, pikachu, link, and bowser on the cover and shrugged because if I like those characters I should like the game, right? Well the first part of adventure mode took me like 5-10 tries because I kept dying to the winged koopas and Yoshi gauntlet. I remember crossing over that line being so proud, only to get demolished by peach and Luigi lol. Countless hours were spent lost in the temple, fighting all those links and falling down the main chamber. And then the first time I ever encountered Samus was in Brinstar. Getting burning by the stage, SD’ing a hundred times, and being forced to fight some alien being in a space suit will be burned into my brain forever. And then the escape challenged my early platforming skills, so it probably took me 10-20 tries to pass the first time. I could go on forever man, this is such a nostalgic video for me bro thanks haha. My original melee disc is cracked in half, so I’ll probably never experience this first hand again lol

yeah, it's probably my favorite single player mode in Melee, but with the amount of game worlds Smash covers now, returning to this formula would be kind of unwieldy and overlong... somewhat like Subspace Emissary.
21:40 will always be the coolest scene
This is probably the coolest concept for the single player you could ask for. If they make a new Smash after ultimate, I want an expanded form of this with the new characters. Maybe instead of big CG cutscenes, they do in-game cutscenes with a few unique ones based on which characters you pick for each of the sections. Kinda like a mix of the new classic mode and the cutscenes from Melee

Even tho The World of Light is good for what it is in Ultimate, I still miss this version of adventure mode where you actually GO to other gaming worlds as an actual ADVENTURE. Imagine Minecraft Steve traveling through the world of Tekken, Luigi going to Dracula’s Castle, Donkey Kong going through an F-Zero like track, Kirby traveling through Mementos from Persona 5 and SO MUCH MORE! Hopefully in a future Smash title (if there is one in the future), they’ll bring back an adventure mode similar to this one.

I was saying that it was still pretty good, it just could’ve been improved upon like actually traveling to other gaming worlds to fight the spirit battles like fusing both Melee’s and Ultimate Adventure Mode concepts together.

I miss the time when Mario sounded like this, his SM64 voice clips in this game sounds badass for a fighting game like Melee! xD
One thing I would change this game is Luigi’s voice. He had his deeper voice in the N64 games with MK64 USA, Mario Golf 64 and Mario Tennis, he shouldn’t sound like Mario! XD

Fun fact, a fan asked Sakurai about Luigi's voice in 2001 and he replied that he used Mario Kart 64 as a reference (the Japanese version) where he had a higher-pitched voice. He was notoriously voiced by like 3 different people during the N64 era, s his voice portrayals vary quite a bit, especially factoring in different regions.

Well I understand that statement with Sakurai taking Julian Barkadoff’s Luigi voice as reference, but what he could’ve thought of was that if he wanted Luigi to have a high pitched voice, I think he could’ve done that by making it exclusive to the Japanese of SSBM, just like he did with the Star Fox characters and Pokémon characters while still having Charles Martinet’s N64 era Luigi voices for the American version of the game.
What’s really interesting is that in Luigi’s Mansion (the game that came out 2 months prior before Melee) they reused Toad’s and Boo’s voice clips from Mario Tennis 64 (which came out 1 year prior before Luigi’s Mansion and Super Smash Bros. Melee) they actually could’ve done the same with using Luigi’s voice from Tennis 64 but for Melee.

I don’t even have this game but I miss this mode so much. I wish they had brought this or Smash Run back for Ultimate. I’d love to run through the mushroom kingdom as Solid Snake chokeholding Goombas lol. Or Joker using his Persona to escape Brinstar. The combinations are endless.

If Melee Adventure Mode were scaled up to represent all fighter-represented franchises as of Smash Ultimate it would be much longer (and have a save feature):

I never fully played Melee growing up, I did once, and I didn't know what I was doing, but something about it's adventure mode always interested me. I think if anything it was the Underground Maze, that's such a cool concept for a level. For me though, I played Smash 4's Smash Run, A LOT, and it was fun for me, but I think if anything, I would love to see another attempt at this style of adventure mode. It's pretty simple and to the point. If it were brought back in Ultimate though, I would love to see them experiment with some new ideas on how to go about it. I think a simple one would be how Luigi switches out with Mario when you beat the previous stage at a certain time, maybe it would go to Luigi's Mansion with Luigi and Daisy.
Right. I think this format is the most compelling Adventure mode concept of them all.
I really think the DK stage were supposed to be mini Diddy Kongs

Melee's adventure will always be special to me. Imagine more they could have added if they had more time. Subspace didn't quite capture visiting each characters' universe like melee's adventure.

I've never seen the cutscene when Bowser comes back and then beaten. It would just skip to the next fight and then Mario after winning again.

You should definitely play Adventure Mode as every character (especially Ganondorf and Roy because they hit harder) to KO enemies (Kirby and Yoshi can eat them too), Luigi (play as Luigi and you’ll KO Mario instead), Giant DK, Giant Kirby, Falco, The Metal Bros, Giga Bowser and become a Link master to get bonus points.

Why didn’t Ultimate have an Adventure Mode like this or Brawl? I mean it did have cool bosses but still. It needed enemies like this, Subspace and Smash Run. And more cutscenes with action and characters interacting.

While I personally prefer subspace because of its character interaction story bosses certain levels and more I can definitely say melees Adventure mode has a certain charm to it that I think is really cool and all of the levels are awesome recreations of locations from Nintendo titles hopefully in the future we can get an adventure mode that’s like subspace and melees combined and has an actual story unlike the copout World of light was

@@davidvkimball yea in every smash melee adventure mode video i see and my pwn memories lf playing this as a kid as soon as the level starts everyone seems to kill the two goombas by jumping then dohble jumps air dodges n throws a koopa shell or something extremely close and i always pick it out thru the years of watching smash videos idk how i left that out my comment lmao

I have always said that Kongo Jungle and Green Greens deserved platforming stages. Corneria, Pokémon Stadium, and Onett would be a bit harder, but I'd like to see someone's takes on them, if modding Adventure Stages ever becomes a thing in either Melee or Brawl.
