Firstly - This was meant to be on my main channel but I just wasnt happy with it. Secondly - I completely forgot to mention, shipping a Wii from Japan isn’t free. There was postage and import costs but there was another item in the box worth a few hundred dollars so the shipping and import costs were fairly low compared to the overall value of the box. Hope you enjoyed :)
For a complete unit that's not a bad deal, I usually pick them up at the Goodwill with just the power brick for $2 a pop, and take them to 2nd, and Charles where they give me upwards of $40 for them. I only keep one around as a backup personally.
The Zelda & Mario Kart channels have - or well had - specific purposes. Zelda - an update channel. Used to fix a game-breaking bug in Skyward Sword. Mario Kart - used to check your online status and online rankings and tournaments. Those were the days haha.
I was about to type how you can use homebrew to fix the video issues and read pal games but you already saw it on stream. Getting homebrew on a wii is fairly simple and fast + Its super worth it. You should do it!
I take it D-terminal is mainly used in Japan (and the Asian region ?) I haven't seen this cable where i live, the UK so doubt it is used in the rest of Europe.
@@ToxoRetro I tested the game. The upside is that it worked. The downside is that it seemed too serious compared to the originals. Pretty sad, really. :/ i'm sure theres some fans out there.
£7, man that's expensive for a Wii, I've seriously picked up good condition units without the Wiimotes here in the US for $2 USD a pop at my local GoodWill over the years, and sold them to 2nd and Charles(they sell new/used Games, movies, music, books, random pop culture crap, and give you trade in credit, or cash for used stuff) for $40 USD a pop, then they go ahead, and charge $65 USD - $70 USD for them behind a glass display case.
that connector type is called a D-Terminal, it often gets used on RGB/Component monitors and Broadcast equipment, it was a lot more popular in Japan than anywhere else.
Europe and Japan are actually both the same region (Region 2). What you're running into is the difference between Europe being PAL and Japan being NTSC.
I bought a 7 $ Wii last year I already had the cables all I needed was the system and mine worked fine,my old ones disc tray got jammed up so I had been wanting one for awhile all that was wrong with it was a few scratches plus its the game cube backwards compatible one as well
for anyone that cares, the reason for the screen flicker and black & white display: the display is PAL and japan runs on NTSC. The same thing happens the other way around or if you have a different region game as well. If you hack it you can force PAL and it will work.
Someone probably said this but the Mario Kart Channel is the online one thing, I recognize it from my friend’s Wii. Also when I tried to set up my Wii on a TV by myself a few months ago, the screen was flickering and in black and white but that was because it was in the wrong ports. The cables don’t stay in all the time though so I need to see how much my Vaio can handle a Wii capture card, since most PC games don’t load on it despite everything else working super well.
The AV cable is basically the Japanese equivalent of SCART, which you may have heard of. The Framemeister supports it I believe (great little device for converting various inputs to HDMI)
I got a Wii from my local thrift store and it had Paper Mario, all 3 Donkey Kong Country games, a ton of NES VC games, and a non-working disc drive, all for $25. A great deal if I do say so myself.
Nice pick up on the Seiko 8306 you have MyRetroWatches working on, l have worked on a couple and they have lovely movements. I have four Sealion versions in my collection...so far!
I believe that cable is a D-Terminal cable! Probably best off just grabbing a component cable for a fiver to replace it and using homebrew to get around the region lock - if you can follow instructions, it's pretty simple.
I've got 6 white Wii's & red & black too all picked up for £8-15 each max. Only 1 i paid more for (45) was the blue 1 that happens to be more featureless than the regular white version
By the way, instead of using the instant option on Google translate, you can press scan, which takes a photo and you can highlight the text to translate. It's more reliable as it isn't having to work all the time
Can we have some more GameCube and n64 stuff???? Plsss I love all ur gameboy stuff but please, i think it will rly help grow ur channel as loads of ppl live this kind of stuff
I paid 6€ for my wii. It was missing the A/V cable, the WiiMotes and the sensor bar (which you can replace with 2 candles on top of your TV). But hey, it works, I can’t complain.
You have now reminded me that my original new mario super Mario wii disc that was the first game I ever played was to damaged to read and had to be trashed.
Region changing it is quite simple, I recommend changing it to NTSC-U, then you’ll have it in English. It won’t plug into PAL signals, but you could get an HDMI adapter and plug it into any old HDMI tv/monitor. I don’t think it’ll play PAL games, however.
Sorry if this has been answered. I came across that type of connector recently looking for old monitors on eBay. Seller told me it's a DFP connector, stands for Digital Flat Panel Connector. I've *never* seen them before but apparently it started showing up in early models of LCD screens.
What you can do is basically Homebrew the Wii with lettetbomb and use something which is called AnyRegionChanger. You can use that to Switch from 4.3J TO 4.3E or 4.3U. This is a far known trick because peeps back then bought games from the Japanese wii shop. Why, because it was cheaper lol
I bought a PS1, PS2, a couple games, a few controllers and a bunch of different wires from a car boot sale (yes I live in the UK) for £20 an both the consoles worked.
Have you tried plugging it into a more modern TV? Most if not nearly all modern TV's should accept both Pal and NTSC signals. There are even some older CRT TVs sold in PAL regions that should accept NTSC. I would recommend trying to connect the Wii to a modern TV. The only problem would be if the TV didn't support either composite or component, and in that case, a composite to HDMI converter should work (most of them that you'll find online should have a switch to change between PAL and NTSC).
I helped get my friend a Wii for £5, it has no cables or wiimote but it was £5. The store said "they couldn't verify it worked", so we got it and used my cables. It worked.
The Wii is super easy to softmod. Region lock can be removed that way. But I'm pretty sure the language of the system itself can't be changed. Or depending what broke on your Wii. You might be able to use the Japanese Wii to fix your own :)
I was wondering if Japanese TVs were 50 or 60Hz, now I know! As soon as I saw the black and white and flickering it gave me flashbacks to accidentally putting PS2 games into 60Hz mode...
As far as I know, the black and white screen means, that you try a NTSC region console on PAL TVs. It happened with my PS2, where I wanted to play a NTSC game on my PAL console. If you would mod the Wii, you could switch the settings, though.
The reason why that wii is showing up with black and white and has that glitchy row on the bottom is because you're using a pal screen on a ntsc device, where the voltage and frame rates are different, it'll still show a picture but it'll be black and white because of the different voltage and framerates :>
Those are the cables that are hard to find for the wii the legendary digital cables that gave 480p picture. (You got the holy grail of cables) those are the holy grail if they are made by Nintendo and only by Nintendo because they were hard to find.
Hi Elliot great content as always, just a quick one could you link what you use to get the birdseye view of the items you are working on in your videos.
The first thing you need to do is get a 2GB SD Formatted to FAT and add the Homebrew Channel then Nintendont and use a WiiU Pro Controller with it now that it supports it. After you jailbreak it use a larger SD formatted to Fat 32 like a 128 GB just use special software on windows. Great for all kinds of Emulators like Mednafen and Retro Arch. Once you Jailbreak it you can also add Wiiware Wads easily. I suggest gamecube Hudson Select series and Wiiware like La Mulana,Castlevania Adventure,Contra and Gradius Sonic 4 was great too and Retro City Rampage. Don't forget you can put in a USB with Gamecube games on it as well just put your games in named folders and name the directory Games and put your game folders in it and inside your games folder you will have named game folders with your games inside named game I believe and if it has two disks name the second disk2. I think IDK it's been a while.
I got a nintendo Wii at the bootsales, 2 years ago. was £5. I had to send off for a cleaning disc, not available in my crummy town. It worked ok after cleaning. had some games, the controller and the nunchuck thingummy. the balance board, are there any games that use that? went to CEX and could get games for pennies. Have thought about getting home brew channel, but their site wasnt online, the last time I looked
I bought a JPN wii in china at the beginning, not realising that the lock thing locked me out of the UK market entirely. I have since hacked it and now the Homebrew menu is in lovely english and all the games play now.
