  • Transfercase switches replacement on my 2003 Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero 3.8L petrol engine. Requires a lot of patience but can be done in a couple of hours with basic hand tools.
    Parts needed
    MR580151 (2H switch)
    MR580152 (2-4H switch)
    MR580153 (4H switch)
    MR580154 (4L switch)
    MR580155 (center dif lock switch)
    Tools needed:
    12mm wrench
    14mm deep socket
    Socket extension
    22mm wrench
    Jack stands
    Floor jack
    You will also need to replace the crush gasket on each switch, I don't have the OEM part number but I use regular crush gasket I normally used for oil drain plug.

      @@01170154 Near as I can gather from other owners, 350K seems like a ballpark of what to expect pretty easily.

    thanks so much for this video. what's crush gasket?

  • @westmakati

    upon checking the catalog. the gasket part# is MU000393. there's also a ball inside but seems not necessary to replace MF540010

      The ball isn't necessary to replace unless they're jammed with dirt

    So my 2003 Limited would blink the center lock light sometimes. I'd just turn off and restart the car and it would fix itself so I could change from 2H to whatever, or back to 2H. Suddenly the center light began blinking constantly and it seems to be stuck in 4H mode.
    I had codes 33, 34 and 35. This was after I had removed the freewheel switch on top of the passenger fender. Switch was tested and read 3,800 ohms and infinity on other so I figured it was the switch. Ordered new one and tested when arrived and it showed good, both 36-37 ohms.
    Installed but no change. Still a constant blinking center light.
    I find it hard to believe that the freewheel switch would fail simultaneously with 1 or more of the 5 transfer case switches.
    Any ideas what this could be?

    I know the switches die if you don't use them. Did you perhaps figure out why that is? Are they lubricated? Is there some build up somewhere?

    Hi, i have the same problem on my 2017 3.5 petrol engine pajero, i was in park and tried to go all the way to 4L (I was testing it) and from that day the center diff. Orange light blinking, some times it starts blinking after 30 to 50 km, and some times blinks when I turn on tha car, if I turn tha car off and turn it on again every thing back to normal but in couple of times not, So I checked it with a computer with the orange light blinking I got the code C1456, any idea about that? And also another question, If I replaced all the switches do I have to program it? or just replace them normally with out doing any thing with the computer?

    • @01170154
      @01170154  3 роки тому +1

      I looked it up on Google and that code is for your switches. You don't need to reprogram anything if you replace the switch

    Hew i got the same issue including the 4x4 high, ussuly i restart the engine and it can be fixed andalso cannot.
    I think i'll go with your way bro(:
    What's the switches catalog number?

      When the center did light blinks, pull the code by jumping pin 1 and 4 on your obd2 plug

    Hey just wondering, if I change the switches do I 100% need new crush gaskets? Or can I use the old ones?

    • @01170154
      @01170154  2 роки тому

      You can reuse the old one in case of emergency. They're not torque to yield washer, but I'd recommend to replace them too since you're already there since they're pretty cheap

    Hi I have absolutely the same issue. So one would term this as an electrical problem. Assuming that the switches are not replaced would you recommend driving the vehicle in 2H on tarmac over long distances. Would this result in any mechanical failure?

    • @01170154
      @01170154  2 роки тому +1

      You will be fine. I drove mine on 2H and 4H for months before replacing the switches

    for this issue, should i have to replace all the switches instead of MR580155 (center dif lock switch) ?

      @01170154  4 роки тому +1

      Ideally yes all 5, I'd also check the condition of the steel ball under the switch itself. Mine was so full of dirt, it jammed the steel ball

    How much would it cost for a mechanic to switch out all 5 switches ? Just ballpark

    • @01170154
      @01170154  4 роки тому +2

      Really depends on how they do it. Some mechanics might opt to drop the whole transmission and that'd cost about $1000. Some might drop just the cross member and charge $400

      @@01170154 I have a mechanic telling me the motor from the transfer case needs replacement, but since he has to go inside the transfer case for that I should also replace switches..but another option is to replace the transfer case in its entirety. My montero is stuck in 4wd right now and he can't get it disengaged.

    • @01170154
      @01170154  4 роки тому +10

      @@freddyteran2291 the motor is not inside the transfercase. It's outside, if you crawl underneath you'll see a black motor the size of your fist by the driveshaft. If yours is stuck in 4wd, the problem might be the solenoid under the air filter. I'd try that first since it only cost $20-30 part and 15 minute DIY
