1. We're a K-12 STEM education nonprofit and our projects are intended for students. We know there are other ways you can do this (using RFID instead of reed switches, not using an Arduino at all, etc).
2. Putting the litter box on an elevated platform that the cat can jump to but the dog can't only works if your cat can actually jump higher than your dog! We have an old arthritic cat who would have trouble getting up onto a higher platform.
3. A dog eating poop is not always an indication of a nutritional deficiency. Don't worry - Riley is getting a healthy veterinarian-approved diet! Scientists actually think this might be an evolved behavior leftover from wolves keeping their den area clean: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5980124/, while some dogs may just think that cat poop is just a particularly delicious snack.

@@bledoutheartthe dogs leg and part of its back got shaved because he got hip surgery. The back is shaved because for those types of surgeries they need an epidural injection in the sacrum part of their spine to ensure that they are comfortable and not in severe pain during the procedure.
My dog is too smart for that stuff! The cats have their own bathroom room or my dog complains about the smell!

@@gagewalker770 Take a large cardboard box, print 4 images of your face and stick them on the inside on 3 sides and the bottom of the box.cut one side of the box off as an entrance/exit. Place the box upside down on top of your cat's littler tray. Then wherever the cat looks when it goes to take a shit, it will see only your face.

I thought of the same concept about 10 years ago only it wasn't for a litter box. It was so pet parents w multiple pets on different diets could make feeding time a little easier. Feeding stations that will only open if the right pet is in front of the right feeding station. Too bad I didn't try to invent it myself. Too busy w cancer treatments and someone else beat me to it. Same thing for doggy door or cat door. Random animals can't just walk in thru those little doors anymore cause they have to have the chip or magnet or whatever to get the door to open.

When my cat was really old before she passed away she started becoming incontinent, and mostly had liquid stool, so we took off the lid, and we’d have to scoop it right away, but sometimes we wouldn’t catch her and our dog was there. My dog realized my cat would fart which alerted us that she was gonna go, as she headed to the litter box and eventually it became a race between the dog and us. Dog started getting faster and even impatient and in a few occasions had her nose next to the cat waiting for the chocolate goodness. And at least twice, she was so impatient that she had her nose right under the cat butt as I walked in about to scold the dog (which I hated doing because it would startle the cat) and as I approached I was too late, and the cat squirted liquid diarrhea on my dog’s nose. I was truly heartbroken when my cat passed away, but can’t help but laugh every time I think about my 60lbs white dog with a chocolate stain on her face.

Had a dog that thought catshit was a fine delicacy and the cat was a candy dispenser. It nearly died one time of a disease it got eating poop in the back yard. If the cat pooped the dog would dig it up and fling it out of the litter box to get the litter of it making a nasty mess. I eventually got rid of the dog.
