    My thoughts and review after living with the black paint Voigtlander 28mm f/2.0 Ultron Vintage Aspherical VM Lens Type II lens as a lifestyle and wedding lens throughout in Montreal and Quebec. I compare it to the ZEISS Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4 ZM lens, test it on my Sony a7rii, Leica M10 and take many pictures of my dog.

    Thanks for this review, first time I've seen some photos with people with this lens, than static objects. I'm not overly excited with this as I find bokeh of this a bit districting at times, more so with foliage that I've seen in other reviews. I've tested this briefly in a shop but wasn't sure. I do agree it is amazingly small for what it is.

    Great review. I think you’ll find the field curvature / vignetting issue you were getting with the lens adapted on the Sony, if you trade in your Sony for a second hand Leica SL Type 601 which are going for £1800 mint here in England, the sensor on the original SL is slightly better than the original M10 according to DXO and DPReview. My personal experience is that the SL’s view finder makes manual focusing easy.

    • @GenericPhotographer
      @GenericPhotographer  2 роки тому

      The curvature is worse on the Sony bodies but not ideal on the M10. The curvature would be the same on the M10 and SL. The sl and M10 sensors are different, SL has more latitude but the M10 produces more pleasing colors imho.

    Love.your video! Just got this lens and I ove it. Questions: when mounted I can u mount it without pressing the release button, it just twists off...is that normal? Also when focusing for object on the left how do you get them in focus if the patch is at the center? Love view? TIA!!!

    I had the 35mm version and it was great but I found a 2.5 Summarit super cheap so I sold it. Interestingly even though it’s a half stop slower it has zero vignette so the exposures on both wide open are very very similar. I’m really wanting this 28mm for the M10 and then use the Summarit on the M2…

    • @GenericPhotographer
      @GenericPhotographer  2 роки тому +1

      that's usually the thing with most Leica lenses. They hardly vignette. The 28 Ultron obviously does but not enough to take away from the image imho. Congrats on the Summarit, that's a modern classic!

    I think the compromise on this lens is it’s close focusing, which might sound backwards, but if you shoot with film… that coupling gets confusing.

    It’s been on my radar since it was released... I’ve always been more of a 35mm focal length and would wonder how did you get use to the new frame lines... What about the 0,5m close distance? Was it a bit of an issue having to take care of that when getting close to subjects?

    • @GenericPhotographer
      @GenericPhotographer  2 роки тому +2

      As a long time 35 shooter, this lens felt surprisingly at home in my use. It felt like what a 35 is to a 50mm, for a 35mm. More breathing room for your composition and more DOF while remaining flat. The framelines are really at the extremes of the finder, I used the whole finder to compose and I found myself having to press the camera closer to my eye to see the lines when needed. The close focus is super handy, though I wish it had the same aperture-click that the 35 APO Cron has. Wound up using live view at first, but got used to how close things were at .5m rather quickly. Hope that helps!

    Do you use an external viewfinder with the 28 on your M2, or do you just use the camera’s entire viewfinder and ignore the 35mm frame lines?

    • @GenericPhotographer
      @GenericPhotographer  2 роки тому

      Used the whole finder as a reference for the framing and it was accurate. Really didn’t feel the need to use an external finder. The lens brings up 90mm lines so you’re not going to get distracted by the 35 lines.

      This lens would pair fantastically with your Sony. It’s a modern lens with some discerning character, but it’s not very vintage imho, but it really performs well. It’ll be easy to manually focus given how sharp it is and how great the dof is.

    Would you recommend getting this lens over the Q2? I think the question is if f1.7 is that much different than f2.

    • @hellatightdude
      @hellatightdude 2 роки тому +3

      I would think the Q2 has a better lens overall, but you’re paying 3x the price of this lens for the entire Q2 system. Now if you’re comparing a Q2 to an M body and this lens, that becomes a different question… but then it becomes how much are you willing to pay for the convenience to interchangeable lenses? But for sheer quality of lens I’d say the Q2 is unmatched for its price point especially if you’re considering purchasing one used

      @@hellatightdude Faster aperture has nothing to do with image performance,its just a lens that lets in more light...several recent voigtlander lenses are equal and sometimes better technically than leica equivalents according to many reviews and in my own experience..
      That is not to say leica lenses or the Q2 are in any way inferior i just think voigtlander are totally in the same ball park as leica these days.

    • @hellatightdude
      @hellatightdude 2 роки тому +1

      @@stephenedmunds207 tracking. But for an overall lens, you could argue that allowing more light could be a feature that could make a lens “better” than another. Not only that but it’s taco sharp wide open with no/minimal imperfections. I’d say voigtlander and Leica are in the same ballpark too. They’re both kind of like the difference between a 458 Italia and speciale. Ones a high performer, and the other ones just got a little more *oomph*. Is it worth more than twice the price? Probably not. But is it better? Yeah, it is.

I sold mine for the 28mm summicron V1....guess what....I ended up selling my summicron and re purchasing this lens because its that good....Im not going to argue with anyone and say this is better then the summicron, but for me...this is a no brainer! for the price, I just dont see a better lens out there for what you get.
