      You know then how powerful their concerts were 🤯 I seen them in Hammersmith Odeon think it was around 1983...I hung around outside and met a few of them despite one of their arsehole roadies trying to get rid of us. Their original guitarist, Eric Bell, was an absolute gentleman to the fans outside that night.

    Grew up in Sweden on Thin Lizzy in the 70-80s. Always No1, now, then and forever. Lead singer Phil Lynott sadly died far too soon in 1986. Got to see them live on their farewell tour in -83.

    Phil is Irish but wrote a handful of southern inspired songs like Mexican blood , massacre or genocide ( killing of the buffalo ) . Thin lizzy has all sorts of style from super funky ( Johnny the fox meets Jimmy the weed or showdown which was sampled on bestie boys Funky Boss ) to straight metal ( thunder & lightning , holy war ) even extremely deep songs about what he was going through the years leading to his death like the song got to give it up or renegade that will just about make you cry

    The First big concert I saw Thin Lizzy opening for Queen in 1977 and I have been hooked on "The Rocker" (Phil) ever since . I also play bass . This band is like the Yardbirds (60's band that had Jeff Beck , Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page ) of the seventies with all the virtuoso guitar players Lizzy had .

    Very astute observation about Phil and wanting to be a cowboy. He was enthralled by myths and legends and one of his hero's was Cú Chulainn. An Irish Warrior who he wrote about in the song Roisin Dubh (Black Rose)

    Thanks, Mr! this is an amazing band - and a great song... I saw them open for Queen in 1978... I was a besotted teenager there for Queen and my crush on Brian May.. but I was totally entranced by Phil Lynott -- the lead singer/bassist - he was magnetic... this is an Irish band! (you may know them for "the Boys are Back in Town" or "Jailbreak" - they were one of first 70's bands to use that dual-lead guitar sound) -- sadly, Phil is no longer with us... but a fantastic band!

    Thin Lizzy is such a great act. You've almost certainly heard them before, as it's the group that does The Boys Are Back in Town, which has been in like half or more of the movies ever made. Check out Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in Its Spotlight). Incredible stuff, great groove to it. Being a bass player myself, I'm a big Phil Lynott fan - he's bass player, singer, and primary songwriter. Also, they're Irish, so you were close... geographically, anyway.

    Philip is the coolness personified best frontman such charisma and Irish charm .

  • @chrisbarlow2131
    @chrisbarlow2131 Рік тому +1

    Thin Lizzy are a band definitely worth checking out. The bands members were a mix of Irish, Scottish and west coast American and spearheaded the twin dual guitar sound that bands like Iron Maiden later ran off with and copied to death - but without the swagger, poise and charm that Thin Lizzy possessed in spades.
    Not only that, but Metallica's wah wah driven guitar sound was pinched from who? Brian Robertson, Thin Lizzy's guitarist who was one of the best exponents of that effect pedal - period. That's probably why Metallica did a cover of Whisky In The Jar, because they were closet fans of the band, and knew their back catalogue.
    But the secret to Lizzy' success in some ways was due to the charismatic front man bass player, Phil Lynott. Imagine as a black kid, growing up in Dublin in the 50's. It was really tough. That's what helped shape the man Phil Lynott came to be.
    He was a rocker, sure, but he was so so much more. He was a poet, a romantic, an artist, and a lyricist with the rare ability to tell a story, laced with believable characters in a three minute song, with some of the best guitar breaks you will ever hear.
    Sadly, drugs took him at the tender age of only 36. But the Irish loved him and if you walk down Grafton Street in Dublin today, you will come across a life size statue of Phil, that Dublin dedicated to him posthumously. Even Irish bands like U2 haven't been accorded the same honour.
    And live, in their pomp, they were THE best hard rock band of the mid to late 70's, because they toured relentlessly honing their craft as they went. If there was one band who you didnt want as support act back then, it was Thin Lizzy. There are very very few bands who can say the blew Queen off stage, but Thin Lizzy did.
    You want to know just how good they were Doug esp live? Then listen to their live album Live And Dangerous. It's been said many times before that it's one of the best recordings of a rock band in their prime, ripping through their set in a breathless manner that just gets the adrenalin pumping. Put it on the deck, crank it up, kick back and then you'll hear just why they were so feared and respected as a live band.
    Then - start checking out their back catalogue. Enjoy enjoy!

    Greatest version of this song is on "Live & Dangerous" when they drop the last bar, then immediately kick into "Boys Are Back In Town." Phil Lynott was an Irishman, a brilliant poet, musician and peerless front of a seriously great band. Phil & drummer Brian Downey were the two original & constant members of the band, with some amazing musos who cut their teeth playing with Lizzy, like Snowy White, Gary Moore, Brian Robertson. There's a vast catalogue of brilliant Lizzy songs, some to try include "Emerald," "Got To Give It Up," "The Rocker," "Still In Love With You," "Roisin Dubh (The Black Rose)" note - studio version is a must, "Are You Ready," "Thunder & Lightning."

    Great reaction to Lizzy! They really did have some top notch musicians in the mix. Now that you've listened to one of the Irish legends, how about a listen to another Irish legend, the great guitarist Rory Gallagher? Rory's fans include Brian May, the Edge, Slash, Johnny Marr and the list goes on. Try taking a listen to "Tattoo'd Lady" from 1979 Rockpalast or "What in the World?" live at the BBC 1973 for a sample of his superb rock/blues guitar work. The great man's birthday is March 2 and he would have been 75 this year, so a reaction sometime this month would be superb. Thanks.
