Exactly what I thought the first time I saw this solo....how many lifetimes would I need to be able to duplicate what the Ox did on the bass in just one?
Man, John Entwistle is no doubt the best bass player to have ever lived, there are so many different techniques he uses! It's amazing! CAN I HEAR THE THUNDER!!??
+John Croce He went from solid wood Alembics to graphite and carbon fibre Buzzards built by Warwick. Along with all the preamps, equalizers, and additional functions like LED lights that mark the frets. Personally, the unnatural growl of a Warwick simply exemplifies his ability to adapt. Alembics were the shit in their day, nowadays though, it's Warwicks or semi-synthetic bodies.
+Where's my Irish whiskey? Tullamore. You are damn close, but his carbon fiber Buzzards were built by Status. His earlier wood Buzzard basses, including his 8 strings, were built by Warwick. Status actually has a line of basses they sell based off the Buzzard, but it has a different contoured body.
this is a the house of blues show as you see the name behind them just as townshed starts his last solo. the day entwistle died one of the dj's refered to him as the Jimi hendrix of the bass. i corrected his that hendrix was the entwistle of the guitar. this man brought accounatbility to rock bass -- not just root and fifth or even root third fifth, but melodic exploration -- pushed everyone forward or backward
entwistle is the jimi hendrix of bass, he started fast agressive playing styles that had not been the norm during the 60's, we have both of them to thank for the future greats like paco, geddy, burton and levin on bass, and just about every guitarist out there today
this show was INCREDIBLE!!! nov 12 1999, this was chicago house of blues in the first festival seating concert since the Cincinnati stampede it was on the "blues to the bush" cd. this was one of 5 gigs they did for charity. believe it or not my dad is the one you hear going "woohoo" in the audience lolol. i remember when the cd came out and we laughed about knowing which songs came from our show because he was doing that the whole show. so here is my cool concert story. my dad first snuck $500 in tickets past my mom, second let me ditch school to go, third we arrived in chicago at like 5 a.m. or something like from cincy that to camp the concert all day, then a scalper tries to buy my ticket telling my dad they will never let me into a 21 and up only bar. so my dad goes on to talk to 20 different people one of which finally agrees to let the 9 year old who doesnt know what being drunk is through the doors right before the opening. and not to be left out my dad at the end of the show my dad yelled to john entwistle to throw him a pick. an obnoxious fan grabbed it and threw it back, so my dad yelled for one more try pointing at me and sure enough my dad snagged it. all true. i was too short being only 9 at the time so i sat on the bass amp right up front, totally unreal experience. the venue was small so it was LOUD!!! 21 years later... my dad and i still have hearing issues, so worth it!!! long live rock long live the who. if i could relive any experience in life this song at this show would be it. hands down.
1) Absolutely some of the finest fretwork ever. 2) Let me be the first to point out that the F'ING GIANT NEON "HOUSE OF BLUES" SIGN might be a first clue that this concert was not recorded at the Royal Albert Hall. :)
Agreed. I just them last summer here in Jersey, and they were as good as when I first saw them in the early 90's. I guess it helps that Roger keeps in shape, and Pete is just a guitar wizard.
Agreed, Pete is only getting better with age. He doesn't jump around as much, but his skill as a guitar player, especially his acoustic work, is second to none IMHO. (RE: Drowned)

Love the interaction between Entwhistle and zak starkey on the drums. So glad that Keith Moon taught Zak instead of Ringo... Zak is a good fit in what is left of the Who.
It's a simple mental exercise to determine who's better: Q: Could Entwistle play anything Cliff could play? A: Yes, very easily, with little effort Q: Could Cliff play anything Entwistle could play? A: Hahaha no, not a chance in hell The thing is no one can play like Entwistle. People compare him to overrated rock/metal bassists like Cliff, but it's far more appropriate to compare him with the likes of Hadrien Feraud or Bubby Lewis
I was lucky enough to see them in Feb I can say that since I first saw them 30some years ago that this may have been the best The tribute to John(as well as the one to Keith) was the highlight of a great show Between the solo and Pete going apeshit this track basically exploded Besides the times with the Who I was able to see John twice with Roger and once on his own I think Pete said it best once - "And John invents yet another way to play the bass"
That's a good observation. The only exception I can think of offhand is Paul Rodgers. He seems to have kept his pipes pretty well intact over the years.
I saw this "Great" Band in Boston years ago. Boy good times!!!!! I had to get to the bus station to ride the "Bus" back home, but missed that "fucking" 5:15 out of the state. Darn walked my way home........
These guys are one of the only bands to play their instruments better in their old age! I guess not having to look after Keith gave them some free time.
When im with my band i start to play like John, like some lines away from the original and then i solo like crazy and everyone stops and its like wtf your doing. John, you really inspires me XD
C'mon Guys, my favorite 2 bassists are John and Jack. Sure they are both great. It's their individual style that sets them apart. When listening to them try to appreciate each for his own merit.
1) The Real Me does not have a bass solo per se. It simply is a bass solo. 2) Yes, that's definitely House of Blues in Chicago. It was the first night, Friday the 12th. I can tell because I'm jumping up in down between Roger and John in the front row. I chose to be in the second row on Saturday on account of the high stage. Those nights were magical.
Something I find really amusing is that on the Alembic website, there's picture of a couple axes they've made using the Buzzard body shape. They never actually refer to it as the Buzzard, and they don't mention any connection with Entwistle (who of course played Alembic basses in the 70's and early 80's).
@bigkid2422 i think he used rotosound strings, or some kind of strings close to that name... but i'm pretty sure he uses rotosound, which gives him that twaing sound
The Beatles and Stones might have sold more records but anyone who knows anything about music KNOWS these boys were the BEST!
That bass solo was just stupid AMAZING! And you know what, Pete Townshend's shredding after the bass solo was also stupid AMAZING!!! Badass.
I could live 10 lifetimes and never master the bass like Entwistle. RIP John, you are missed.
Exactly what I thought the first time I saw this solo....how many lifetimes would I need to be able to duplicate what the Ox did on the bass in just one?
I never tire of John Enwistle solos
Man, John Entwistle is no doubt the best bass player to have ever lived, there are so many different techniques he uses! It's amazing! CAN I HEAR THE THUNDER!!??
When I saw the bass solo, the first words to come were HOLY SHIT.
The best bass player that walked the earth and will ever walk it.
Indeed. 10/10
Entwistle changed the instrument, the bass will never sound the same again. He was simply the best !
John was so NASTY on the damned bass, he just kicks ass!
+John Croce He went from solid wood Alembics to graphite and carbon fibre Buzzards built by Warwick. That bass solo was just insane..
he is so amazing it is almost ridiculous

John..... laying down that yellow brick road with big foot prints for all other rock bass players to follow... Great video. Thanks for posting!
With Mr. Entwistle & then Townshend at the controls
Those strings are melting!

what he did in 5:29 was crazy.
This is probably my favorite WHO tune!!! Saw Entwistle on video hanging with Sammy Hagar in Cabo just before he passed,R.I.P.
This is at the House of Blues Chicago, IL. Novermber 12th or 13th 1999
12th!!
12th!!
I went both nights
Zak and Ringo are 2 amazing drummers.
They both are talented.
tone is unmistakable, technique is inimitable
the one and only OX! :))
RIP Thanks for the music!
amazing guys, I just can't stop watching em, I'm hooked
I love Metallica, and Cliff..But whoever thinks Cliff Burton is better than John Entwistle is out of their fuckin minds lol
It's a simple mental exercise to determine who's better:
Q: Could Entwistle play anything Cliff could play?
A: Yes, very easily, with little effort

entwistle in that have 55 or 56 and he play the best solo
I was lucky enough to see them in Feb I can say that since I first saw them 30some years ago that this may have been the best The tribute to John(as well as the one to Keith) was the highlight of a great show Between the solo and Pete going apeshit this track basically exploded Besides the times with the Who I was able to see John twice with Roger and once on his own I think Pete said it best once - "And John invents yet another way to play the bass"

Chaos and uniformity.... Perfect together.
Very Cool!! Us old guys remember this stuff well :-)
Danny
There's also House of Blues in lots of other cities - New Orleans, Cleveland, even Orlando (plus more).
Happy birthday Pete!
JOHN FUCKING ENTWISTLE R.I.P. you, beyond all doubt, are a virtuoso at the bass a guru among all of us bass players. you make it look so easy!!
I saw this "Great" Band in Boston years ago. Boy good times!!!!! I had to get to the bus station to ride the "Bus" back home, but missed that "fucking" 5:15 out of the state. Darn walked my way home........
John Entwistle, Chris Squire & Geddy Lee my favorites...!
Add John Paul Jobes
Jones lol
his hands must ve been a gift from the gods!!
This is the home town gig, Shepard's Bush Empire. Tiny place. They don't play it evey year but if they've toured they do.
I went to the 2000 one
This Is From The HOB in Chicago....It's available on The Blues To The Bush CD. It's out of print right now.
One of the best bassist i hope im half as good as him one day
Top Quality Band! A super talent fest
These guys are one of the only bands to play their instruments better in their old age! I guess not having to look after Keith gave them some free time.
It's 5:15, and it's on the album Quadrophenia. There's no bass solo, but they seem to do one while touring.
Awesome!
i just saw a comment saying something about speed. it isnt about speed, its about technique, which is why geddy lee is my favorite bassist.
When im with my band i start to play like John, like some lines away from the original and then i solo like crazy and everyone stops and its like wtf your doing.
John, you really inspires me XD
Thunderfingers!
yh RIP john greatest bassist of all time
Note the logo up behind the band, not Royal Albert hall, but somewhere at a "House of Blues"
The Who should play everywhere and anywhere
It was on the HOB (House of Blues)

House of Blues Chicago is the Venue
Entwistle - still an inspiration.
@HaukkaMan Yes. John Entwistle is rated over Flea a million times.
Ya think?
@@petebradt 10 year old comment reply. I can dig it.
i hate people who say stuff like "Meh its not that impressive" YOU PLAY IT
Greatest Band in the World!!! EVER!!!
Love it!
But, I don't think this is in the Royal Albert Hall.
Except for Geddy Lee, Flea could be one of the best LIVING bass players... But the Ox will always be king!
@KCBill13
Yeah, Chicago. I think this is from 99. They did a quick tour with a couple shows in Chicago and a couple in Shepherd's Bush.
I couldn't help but sing high harmonies with Townshend :P
Long live the Ox
Wholly fuck, thats FABULOUS. Never saw this before.
@captain94ace They introduced it during their '96 tour of Quadrophenia
OX!!
C'mon Guys, my favorite 2 bassists are John and Jack. Sure they are both great. It's their individual style that sets them apart. When listening to them try to appreciate each for his own merit.
Times are changing, friend.
The song is called 5:15. No bass solo in the song. In fact, he only solo'd to that song recently (on a 1982 Live CD of them I have, he doesn't solo).
1) The Real Me does not have a bass solo per se. It simply is a bass solo.

john entwistle is the reason why british seems so proud all the time
-me-

@LukaaaasMusic jimi hendrix is john on 6 string...
Thanks for the info.
@XtrmMcjohnson Not true. Improved amplification of later years brought it out. But a lot of guys played like that.

House of Blue Chicago. Arounnd 1999ish.2000
there is an album of theirs, Blues to The Bush, 1888 tour
explain to me how ones fingers move so fast
RIP Thunderfingers
Zep's respectable but you definitely have a solid poind. No band will ever compare to the who.. To me, the Who is THE ROCK BAND, period...
@bigkid2422 i think he used rotosound strings, or some kind of strings close to that name... but i'm pretty sure he uses rotosound, which gives him that twaing sound
@droxp
5:15, on the Quadrophenia album.
