      @@Hobbyhoarderguy one of the reasons we were such a successful species is because we're highly social and generally value one another (depends on what society teaches ofc). We've seen so many documented cases of humans pre agriculture healing bones, living to a very old age etc. and even making people with tumours living for quite some time because they were cared for so well.
      For some reason conservatives believe in the "survival of the fittest" but that's literally never been how it's worked biologically for the most part because evolution isn't that straight forward at all. Like ASOIAF says, the lone wolf loses their lives but the pack survives. That is literally why humans are such a success story. (Depending how you look at it ofc hahaha).

      @resintom852 the eclipse lasts for minutes. It's fine. And it depends on more than just that. I grew up in a doomsday prepper family and let me just say, it messed me the fuck up.
    I don’t think it’s normal for a 5 year old to worry about the next president and survival when the world collapses.
    I don’t think it’s ok to feed a child those messages to the point where they don’t think they’re going to survive until adulthood.
    I have always had food storage, 72h kits, bug out vehicles, plans to live in church owned mountains, and lots of guns for when shit eventually was supposed to hit the fan.
    I remember when hostess filed for bankruptcy and people panic bought the “last Twinkies” and thinking “this is it. We are running out of food and people are going to fight over the last of it and we’re all going to die.” I was no older than 6.
    I also remember when Obama got elected and my family was VERY against him. Little me was so worried and brainwashed that this man would kill us all that when he actually won the election, I sobbed for HOURS. I was terrified!
    All these are things I’m unpacking in therapy, but do any of them sound like something a child should ever worry about?? I feel like I would be so much better off now if I was never brainwashed into believing the world would end in my childhood.
    It was so bad that I became suicidal as a teen. Why keep living if it’s all going to end in blood and suffering soon anyways?

  • @Lee-gz3px

    Hi!! Ex-mormon here!! I grew up being taught that you NEED at least a full years worth of food storage in your house at all times. As a kid, we had dehydrated apple slices, at least 15 pounds worth of pasta, and an entire cold storage filled wall to wall with metal tins of preserved food. We had fire ladders in every upstairs room with a window (but never learned how to use or assemble them.) Mormons are taught to always have food storage in order to be prepared for anything. Nothin' wrong with a little preparation or a weeks worth of extra food, but I remember the sheer paranoia and terror I felt every time I realized we didn't have an entire year's supply of laundry detergent or dehydrated milk or toilet paper rotting away in our cold storage. Preppers - at least the ones I grew up with - take things to the fullest extreme. And a lot of their kids suffer from anxiety and panic disorders due to living our whole lives thinking we aren't prepared enough (despite the fact that we had an entire walk-in closets worth of pinto beans downstairs.) Being prepared is good and can bring peace of mind, but it becomes a very slippery slope when a few extra boxes of mac-n-cheese turn into a full-blown panic attack about not having 80 pounds of uncooked rice preserved in your basement. Most of the prepper mentality is just paranoia, and that gets passed down to their kids, and it SUCKS.

And those types usually got bad scores because they weren't really planning for total societal collapse but more for like, waiting out a crisis.
    And I remember that the couple that managed to get like, the highest score was a couple that did a lot of community outreach and stuff. They did self defense classes for the community and installed solar pannels for their neighbors and had a garden and a loom and the like. And while even that is good, generally. On the 6th of February last year there was a huge earthquake in Turkey and the centre of it was my city. We were so scared to go up to our apartments because there were aftershocks nearly as powerful. We still sometimes have little ones and nearly everyone is anticapaiting an Istanbul earthquake and no one is prepearing for any of it.

    I wouldn't go as far as to say that you should fill every empty jar in your house with water, but it is good to keep 5 or 6 gallons of drinkable water ready for emergencies. It's not enough for a "doomsday scenario," but it is enough for a natural disaster or if a water main goes out or your pipes freeze. Also, if you have the room, you will want to store a larger container of water to fill your toilets basin if you want to be able to flush but your water is going to be out for an extended period.

    Wouldn't appropriate doomsday prepping be planting a garden or learning skills like first aid?

    • @msjkramey
      @msjkramey 3 місяці тому +7

      A garden takes month at least to yield anything. Most preparedness is for natural disasters, so you want enough water to drink, cook, bathe, and clean for each person for at least 3 days. And you want non-perishable food that doesn't need to be heated to be eaten. You also need to have any medicine that your family needs to stay alive. Portable chargers are nice so you can keep your phone on for emergency alerts. A basic first aid kit. Just normal stuff like that

    • @sylphlens4511
      @sylphlens4511 3 місяці тому +6

      @msjkramey that's fair for emergencies like natural disasters but most of these prepers are preparing for things much worse. But never seem to want to learn skills that matter and will last in an apocalypse or if the government collapses.

    Most of the nuclear material gets changed to elements with very short half-life’s after a nuclear blast so you’d only really need to prep for a couple months. The material left over from producing nukes is far more dangerous than what’s left over after one explodes and several weeks pass. Though it’s definitely more dangerous to be near a nuclear impact site after one has recently exploded, shorter half life’s means more danger initially.

    13:33 the thing is the closest we have in written record to an apocalypse scenario is the Black Death, and this libertarian, every man for himslef and especially movie based idea (as there would be no movie otherwise) is nonsense. Community didn't get stronger, it just stayed the exact same. The rule of law stayed, crime didn't have a noticable uptick, very little changed, in a way depressingly so and the biggest thing that happened was worker rights movements, but that was a movenment with hundreds of thousands of people on one side, not every peasant for themselves. It ended with slightly more compensation and that was it.

    The whole "turning the frogs gay" thing was Alex jones not understanding an issue or purposely misleading his audience. The issue is that yes, there are many pharmaceuticals in the water. They get there because humans pee them out. This can cause issues in some animals, primarily amphibians who are very susceptible to environmental changes because of their permeable skin. So what he meant by "turning the frog gay" is him misunderstanding that pharmaceutical in the water can cause some frogs to be hermaphrodites.

    I never understand the obsession with emp protection since most electronics are so interconnected for use that if one small part of the system goes down they stop working as intended. So why worry about a phone or radio when if the rest of the system goes down a working phone ilor radio has no use as a phone or radio anyway

    • @EmissaryofWind
      @EmissaryofWind 3 місяці тому +3

      A radio is a good idea because they're usually the last system of communication to stay functional. You need very little to start broadcasting, and they're also the best way to receive emergency broadcasts. Their construction is very simple, so they have few points of failure and are easier to repair than basically any other wireless communication device.
