On the bee sting story, if you are stung by a bee, you never ever use tweezers to remove the stinger. All that will do is squeeze the venom sacks forcing more venom into the stinger hole. The best thing to do is to use a credit card, a playing card, a business card, or some other thin semi-rigid material to scrape the stinger out. This will get the stinger out without adding more venom to the wound. My dad was stung over 200 times by a bee swarm and, thankfully, was not allergic though he did go into shock and required a hospital stay overnight. He was in his early '70s when this happened, so they were very concerned about it. Their treatment in the ER? Yep, just using a piece of thin plastic to scrape the stingers out and giving him fluids and I hefty dose of antihistamine, just to be sure.

I had my "Kevin" boss straight-up tell me once "I think you're after my job." Note that at the time I was not even eligible to take the promotion exam for his job title. I replied "Of course I'm after your job! I make you look like a rock star, you get promoted, and I get your old job. Is that a problem?" Yes, Kevin had a problem with that.
I was SO glad when I got a different job with the company by acing the promotion exam.

I understand the heat stroke story very well:
I had a "minor" heatstroke 38 years ago, I remember well because my son will be 38 next month & I didn't know about him at the time. Anyways, I was working at a warehouse club about 3 years layer and the heat was getting to me. I tried to tell an assistant manager a couple of times I was getting sick because of the heat. He told me twice I was fine. The 3rd time, as he started yelling at me that I was fine, I turned ar and proceeded to throw up all over his shoes. I looked up, and said I really feel ill. After that all I had to do is tell him I was getting too warm, IF he didn't pull me off when he thought it was too hot for me, lol!

Bicycle shop story reminds me of my ex. His family owns (or owned? No idea - haven't been in contact in years) a shop that mainly matches and sells car paint. My ex wasn't all that interested in the business, but a job is a job, and it was steady work. When his colleague answered the phone, the customer often asked to speak to a man, so she'd hand the phone off to my ex. He'd listen to the questions, know that he was thoroughly unqualified to answer them, and offer to get an expert. The customer would get pissed off when he'd hand the phone right back to his female colleague. They both got a kick out of it.

I had an employer demand that I come in when I was sick once. When I threw up on her shoes and passed out she freaked! I had not taken a sick day in 12 years, but was always the person tasked to cover for other employees when they were sick. I was the only man in the company site. Turns out I had walking pneumonia for about a week before this all went down. She actually had the nerve to try to write me up. Oh, and when I passed out, she was the one to call 911 and watched them take me to the hospital. I refused to signed the write up and dared her to get the HR/CEO or anyone else involved.

20:59 when I was a new EMT, my boss(owner of the private ambulance), told us to go stage around town during a confirmed, long tracked tornado. She told us we had to stay in the ambulance in gas station parking lots. We were in a building with a basement. I told her the only way I was leaving was in my own car to go next door for shelter. I quit very shortly after because this wasn’t the last stupid decision she made. I can always find a job, but can’t get another life.

    @MichelleYoung-c6u 2 дні тому +1

"Boss gets it in his head that my Dad is going to replace him, because... (basically he's excellent at his job and keeping the company running smoothly)."
Reminds me of the story of Princess Pingyang. Now, I don't remember all the particulars, and the website where I read the story is gone, and I don't feel like hunting down all the information and reading it again, so I will simply summarize, to the best of my memory.
Sometime in China before the Tang dynasty, there was a general who was REALLY good at his job. He had a daughter. They were both EXTREMELY LOYAL. And she was VERY COMPETENT doing her womanly things. After all, she was raised by a highly competent man, who taught her about her worth as a woman in China. That is, he taught her that she HAD WORTH. She loved him. She loved him almost as much as she loved China! And likewise, her father loved the Emperor, almost as much as he loved China.
But the Emperor got a bee in his bonnet. "This general is SOOOOOO competent! He's MUCH more competent than I am! Surely, he will stage a coup and take over rulership from me, because that is what I would do, if I were the general, and I were that competent and my Emperor were as incompetent as I am!" A little mixture of self-awareness mixed with stupidity.
So, while the general was far from the capital, doing his job (excellently), the Emperor declared him to be a traitor. He declared the general's daughter to be a traitor, too, because why not go for all the man's relations, as well? I don't know about any other relations, but I DO know about this daughter, Pingyang.
She bundled up her husband and they escaped. Then, Pingyang decided that they would go across the country to meet up with her father. And, along the way, she would stop off at the General's home, gather everything that would fetch a price, and bring it along to sell or trade. And she used this to hire every mercenary she could, along the way. And she gave rousing speeches to the populace, and convinced a great many of them to enlist with her, to serve in HER army, eventually to report to the General and join HIS army.
She INSISTED and ENFORCED the rule that NONE of her soldiers would rape, pillage, plunder or loot. In fact, they were ordered to be polite to everyone they met, and PAY FOR FOOD. And when they came across a village that was suffering, largely due to the Emperor's incompetence, they GAVE THE VILLAGES THEIR FOOD. And then used the General's private fortune to purchase more, at the next opportunity.
So, now, there were well-fed villagers, who were impressed with her, and DECIDEDLY UNIMPRESSED with their Emperor.
Meanwhile, the General is saying, "Well, if you INSIST that I MUST usurp your power, I suppose I MUST usurp your power. Brace yourself, you fool. For the good of CHINA, the LAND I LOVE, I will take this incompetent fool off the throne, and rule myself, even though I was loyal until literally five minutes ago, when you declared me to be your enemy! I can't argue with crazy or stupid, but I CAN BEAT THEM BOTH INTO SUBMISSION."
So, Pingyang swept across the country, gaining a huge army as she went, and soon enough, her army met with her father's army, and she handed her army over to his (and probably told him HOW IT RAN, while she did so. "OK, Daddy. I love you, but you MUST NOT break MY rules with THESE men. They are used to things being a certain way, and I WILL NOT ACCEPT change in that department. These men will come back to their wives, PROUD, having served WITH HONOR, and made the villagers HAPPY TO SEE THEM, because they are KIND and POLITE and NO DANGER TO THE WOMEN."
So, the giant army swept a new path across China, continuing to feed the hungry and impress the poor with their excellent manners and kindness, and EVEN MORE PEOPLE joined the cause.
By the time the army reached the Emperor, he had zero chance of winning, because NOBODY WANTED HIM. Why would they, when they had Pingyang and her father, and FOOD and HONOR and COURTESY?
So, the General deposed the Emperor and started his own brand new dynasty (it MIGHT have been the Tang, but all I remember for sure was that the former Emperor was definitely NOT Tang. Unless I'm totally wrong and got it reversed. Haha).
Since the General was now Emperor, his daughter was now Princess Pingyang. And she was THE ONLY WOMAN BURIED WITH FULL MILITARY HONORS, including music! Music was NEVER done for women, only for warriors. But she got it.
Unfortunately, being a woman, she died due to complications in childbirth, or something. I know she died young, and there was much sadness in the land, because she WAS a beloved princess.
Honestly, I don't know what happened to the family/dynasty after that. I got the feeling she was an only child. BUT, if she bore a child, that child could have inherited. Or, maybe the General would just adopt his most trusted/competent General to follow in his footsteps?
Dang! Now I DO want to took it all up again! Princess Pingyang! I would watch that movie!

My last job started a sick day policy that said if you have to call in sick, they need 24 hours notice. Doctor's notes did not matter. So if you are going to wake up sick on Wednesday, you are required to call before the start of your shift, ON TUESDAY, to ask if you can get the next day off. ZERO sick days, and you could not ask to use a vacation day for it.

That story about someone getting in trouble for using the fire extinguisher reminds me of something that happened at work a couple years ago. One of our cold islands in the deli started smoking, so the used the extinguisher and called 911. The store director was pissed.
That same week, there was something going on in the cooking area, so an electrician was called, but one of my manager friends was unsure of if she should call 911 again. Anyway, the owner hired his son/nephew/cousin's kid/whatever at the bottom level and they assigned him to me. When we broke for lunch, we walked by another crew and the kid's comment was "Wow. They're doing the same thing as us!" So yeah... Fast forward to the end of our lunch and the young kid, not knowing any better I suppose let me know what he made per hour and it was 50 cents more than me! (This was in 1983). I told another equipment operator who likewise had been at it forever and he got angry too. We both quit after lunch and were employed by another owner who was in the same line of work by that afternoon. That company was gone by the time I returned to the area after my naval service ten years later but I have no idea why it failed.

Kitchen Fire Comment: Actually it was a LOT more than just a few hundred in Product Loss...
You forgot to include the HOURS of downtime needed to rip the kitchen apart to Deep Clean EVERYTHING because the chemicals used in Kitchen Extinguishers are nasty (they need to be to deal with the the burning grease in a fire) as well as fixing the damage caused by the fire and recertifying the appliance as Safe to Use...
At least OP used a hand-held Extinguisher (or at least that's what's implied) rather than pull the wall-mounted Fire Suppression System handle because that would have triggered the Range/Oven Extinguishers and they would have covered the EVERYTHING within about 40 FEET of the nozzles in a fine powder (HALON Gas Suppressors have been Illegal for more than 20 years in all buildings where the Public can be exposed to the Gas) requiring most of the Restaurant to be Deep Cleaned and ALL the product not in completely sealed packaging (AKA unopened canned goods) to be thrown out...refilling and recertifying that Extinguishing System is at LEAST $15,000.00...I know, a disgruntled worker deliberately triggered the one at my Father's Restaurant after he was fired for showing up to work 2 hours late and drunk...the Restaurant was closed for 3 days to clean up everything and reorder all the lost food/products...Dad Sued the Unholy Howling HELL out of him for nearly $175,000 in costs and lost income (lost product, cleanup, worker pay, recertification of the Fire Suppressor System, lost money due to being closed etc.)...he got it too, the Judge was NOT amused when he saw the Security Camera video of the System going off and spraying the cooks with chemical (their faces are right under the nozzles when they're cooking) and then seeing everything inside the kitchen and in the first 15 feet of the bar/dining room outside the kitchen doors looking like a blizzard just hit...

@@mjjoe76 Stopping a fire when small is ALWAYS better than letting the place burn down...replacing the entire building and everything in it is ALWAYS more time consuming, expensive and difficult that simply stopping a fire and repairing the damage...
There's also the fact that letting the entire building burn risks letting it spread to other structures and/or hurt/kill someone...

There was a time whilst employed as a train driver and we had a super heat wave, but lower management jumped on several drivers for getting water they said we were not entitled to. So drivers started to delay services or cancel trains due to overheating. Lower management got stamped on by higher management and all train crews got issued with stainless steel water flasks, ( in the winter we kept ready made tea in them or milk) Yet again, management who didn't work on the trains, proved their ignorance of working conditions.

  • @gabeangel8104
    @gabeangel8104 8 днів тому

People who pride themselves on not taking days off when sick (or who demand that others come in when sick) are often responsible for far more loss of productivity as the illness spreads around the entire workplace.
Also different people have different amounts of immune response to illnesses (both naturally and due to a lot of factors like whether they have pre-existing conditions, how much stress, sleep, nutrition, etc. their body is operating under, whether they have already been unwell recently, age, general fitness/health, medications they may be on, and many many, many other things) so someone may come into work with an illness that they experience as only a mild cold, but they may pass that virus to another person who ends up seriously unwell with it. Let's not forget that 'only the flu' is pretty much the understood trope for 'it's not that bad', yet hundreds of people die of flu because, for their body, it actually is that serious - this is how vastly the severity of an illness can vary from one person to another!
Also, sick people aren't going to be very productive even if you force them to be physically present in the workplace. Who can consentrate when you feel like crap?!
This is why limiting sick days is actually a bad decision for the good of the business overall as well as for individual workers. A lot of bosses don't actually think things through and realise that doing whatever they can to support their employees to be as well and happy as possible will result in them being the most productive and loyal

Oh geez- I am SO glad I am retired and don't have to deal with this office crap anymore. One job I had years ago called 'Job Boss' here in Minnesota had a creepy manager who commented for a few weeks at a time from ever-so-much-better, you know- California. When a company in the Netherlands bought the company he sent us a pathetic, sniveling e-mail stating that it was apparent the new company did not like him so he was leaving. Oh my gosh, I laughed so hard. During my 40-some years in offices I have so many stories of people being asses. Funny thing is, so many of those people have died by now. Where did it get them by being so nasty?

"As long as it works, I don't care" is absolutely _terrible_ programming practise. It's crucial to be able to *keep* it running. This includes making sure the work is adequately documented, and coding to make maintenance and future development simple and smooth, ideally as seamless as possible. Things like using defined constants instead of "magic numbers", variables with meaningful names, and enumerated values make an incredible difference. I used to work with a guy who worked very quickly, but his code was full of bugs, and it was so hard to understand that when I was trying to track down a bug just one month after he'd finished one chuck of work, he himself couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be doing. "Just don't touch it or you'll break something" isn't an acceptable coding standard.

The bike story reminded me of an experience (several, actually. But one in particular.) that I had as a straight man working in the sewing and fabric industry for a few years. I was in middle Tennessee and even sold Wanda Jackson the fringe she wears in her video with Jack White in the Fire on the Mountain video (I'm also a musician. As I didn't move there for it and hated Nashville area musicians, I didn't recognize her, and was even a little dismissive. But, that's another story where I was sort of the Karen in that situation. Some other time, maybe).
Anyway, I was the softline supervisor (in charge of the sewing department) at a place that we'll call Blow-Ann's. I was one of the only men in the store, and most of my employees that worked the cut table didn't know even a fraction of what I did. There was this old lady who walked up while my female co-worker was helping someone else. I asked if I could assist her. She blatantly said, "No. I don't think so," in a semi-condescending tone. I let her be for a bit, but as the other transaction was taking a while, I asked again. Again, I got a no. She was polite in tone, but adamant. After, what I will confess was a crazy amount of time, my employee helping this other customer and me just doing recovery behind the cut table, the old woman finally sighed big and said, "Okay, look. Here's the problem we have. My granddaughter does cozplay and we're having this problem (don't remember specifics. It was a decade ago) with her costume. Do you have anyone who can help us?"
Here's the thing, the reasons I know about fabric and sewing are trifold. First, I was a weird kid who wanted to be a superhero. At around eight my mother decided that she was tired of making me costumes and I figured out how to do it on my own. By 14, it was the early eighties and I was into hair metal, so I started making my own clothes for that. That later transitioned into a Goth phase--same thing. Then, I got into college and double majored in Speech and Theater. It was required I learn to sew for my degree. Well, in my case, sew even better.
They explained their problem and I gave them multiple options on how to fix it, including recommendations on using zig-zag stitches on the spandex and how to fit fabric around styrofoam. I'm good at solving weird problems like that second one. Again, theater training.
My co-worker who was finally done with the customer who was taking up so much time said loudly, "Wow! Those are good suggestions. I wouldn't even have known what fabric to use or how to sew it, much less the odd solves."
That old lady suddenly smiled and looked a lot nicer. From there on out, she would only deal with me, even if all she needed was thread. Stuff like that happened a lot, and many were upset when I eventually left that job. I actually miss it a lot.
But, my departure is yet, another story. Blow-Ann's HR was the Karen in it. Their loss.

As a software specialist "As long as it works, I don't care." It's a great way to produce super fragile software that only just works now and will cost you a fortune in the future because it's not made to be maintainable. Software almost always needs to be updated to accommodate new requirements or just changes to its operating environment.
With that attitude I would have been tempted to make all the variable names unfathomable things like boss_is_a_jerk.

THIRTY-SIX people walk in to a place with double-booked tables, no reservation or even a "how do you do?" to the waitstaff.... that's next-level entitled. "If it work I do not care" works especially not in the computer science field. Programming is not complicated but incredibly complex. With all the technologies/security/process changes the code decays faster than any physical components and unorganized/unupdated code will lead to huge time loss.
