    This is one of the most heartbreaking things I've watched in a long time. I'm only 10 minutes in and already my blood is boiling. For those that say her family shouldn't be compensated - CLINICAL TRIALS where people are paid for their contribution. This was an UNAUTHORIZED harvesting of her body while she was alive and even in death. It's beyond sickening that she saved so many lives around the world yet her story is only revealed half a century later.

      It was 1951. Back then, they didn't consider things like asking permission for taking a sample of cells, no matter from whom the cells were taken. If you read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, there's also a story of a white man in the 70s who had his cancer cells used, and a doctor was even charging him to return to the clinic for years. The doctor implied that it was for the man's health, to make sure the cancer wasn't returning, but the doctor was actually making money off of the man's cells and taking blood and tissue samples for further research. When the man found out, he sued, and HE LOST. Things have changed even from the 1970s.

      Goluckymusic4life Every Black person, yes! But everyone else damn well better as well. Black history is an important role model touchstone for young Black children, but it is also a pinnacle of history in general--affecting all others. Not perpetuating Black history for all is a lot of what's messed up with the world and a lot of why so many non-Black people have not seen Black voices with agency and first person value. If the Black voices of history are silenced, everyone loses.

      I am white and I think I should know this too! And speaking from a white perspective MORE of my fellow white people should watch this too. Not only watch it but ACKNOWLEDGE IT and THEN progression forward can be made in race relations. I have so many acquaintances who SAY they are not racist or stand with the black community in acknowledging the past but they really aren't. They just say it. They don't read black literature or poetry, they don't befriend in a close manner black people nor do they educate themselves on things they say they are against that DID happen. Now, not all white people have ancestors who owned slaves or mistreated black people BUT we can't ignore it to make ourselves more comfortable. EVERYONE should watch this and many other documentaries. White skin can have so many vast descents. Many aren't Anglo-Saxon white people like the term generalizes but many black people aren't "ghetto ignorant thugs." Skin is a color and unfortunately, in history, people with certain heritage were easily targeted for many things. Being open minded to watch and learn without a judgemental bias things of which we do not know is the only thing that will bring about empathy and change. I wish labels didn't exist.

    It's hard for me to be objective when it comes to "wonderful" breakthroughs that Henrietta Lack's cells did for science. I was experimented on when I was in preschool when I was about 5 years old in 1983. It was a school field trip to the dentist & I only suppose to learn about dental hygiene. However, two white men took to the back room & put this long shiny sharp object in my mouth & scrap the upper part of my mouth. Being a 5 year old I thought it was pretty diamond ring. But when the blood rushed out of mouth & the pain began I knew something went terribly wrong. I was screaming & they covered my mouth. They even lied to my mom & refuse to let her come to the room to check on me. To this day I don't know how they stopped the blood. 33 years later, I still have the scars in my mouth. I never went the dentist again until I became an adult. I don't trust doctors anymore, I don't even go for routine screenings anymore. I would literally have to break a leg in order to go the doctor. I'm still very upset about what happened to me as a kid, so I don't believe that Henrietta died from cancer. I believe she was experimented on & was murdered. Shit if they can experiment on me on a field trip in 1983 just think about what they did back in 1951!

      The doctor that started the HeLa cell line ALWAYS used the first two letters of a name for the cells of a patient that were grown in the lab. He wasn't worried about being sued because they just didn't think anyone would worry about a clump of tumor cells that would have gone into the trash otherwise. He gave away cells for free to any researcher that wanted them. THAT doctor didn't make money off of the cells.

    • @beautifuljoe1313
      @beautifuljoe1313 7 років тому +4

      And, it WAS 1951. They just didn't think to ask consent to use a clump of tumor cells back then. If you read the book, this has happened to people, no matter of race, for decades until consent laws came about. Even in the 1970s, there was a white man who tried to sue his doctor for using his cells for profit, and even had the man flying back to the clinic every year for tests, making him think it was for his health, rather than for the doctor's profit. That patient lost the law suit.

      There were some morally reprehensible uses of HeLa cells as well. Sloan Kettering immunologist Chester Southam wanted to see if the cells could infect other humans. He started with patients who already had cancer, injecting HeLa cells in their arms. The cells grew into tumors. The tumors were removed, but in several cases, they grew back. In one case Henrietta’s cancer metastasized to the patient’s lymph nodes. The same experiment was tried with volunteers from an Ohio prison. Once again, tumors grew in the prisoner’s arms. In this case, though, the prisoner’s healthy immune systems eventually fought off and rejected the HeLa cells.
      By the end of his research, Southam had injected over 600 people with HeLa. Many of these people were gynecological surgery patients at hospitals where he worked. The patients had never given consent to be injected. For this, he was eventually brought up on charges of fraud, deceit, and unprofessional conduct. In 1963, The Regents of the University of the State of New York found him guilty, and he was placed on medical probation for one year. from the Immortal Cells of Henrietta Lacks

      If it is the south they already have African dna. Steve cobbs that eternal idiot had like 14 percent subsaharan African in him and he thought he was going to make a " white" only colony. And alot of the folks that consider themselves Moorish sovereign citizens or think "white" people should kneel to them are 25 percent Irish or something. I was adopted in Texas in 79 and until I was 37 I honestly thought I was part of this mess we have in the south too, but as it turns out I wasn't. I don't come from parents that were here long enough to rape anyone or inslave anyone or to mix with anyone and the mix I ended up being pretty much just makes me a recreation of an icini celt. So basically I think bigotry of any kind is really retarded and I will not stand by and watch anyone do it to anyone else. I can't stop the meaness or cruelty of the entire planet but I can say no one has my permission to use the term mother f er because that is a derigotory action, I can say that I will not allow anyone around me to steal from anyone else. I am not fond of white men, but I must say the only black men that have been moral and upright around me have either been married to good women or let God run their lives. So I think the best policy is to try to give every person the benifit of the doubt unless they are male and then they have to prove they are human first and then just just judge people by the content of their character.

      the her daughter Elsie wasn't a state Institution, you need to educate yourself before you just start making up facts. LC was committed to the hospital because henrietta was ill and could not take care of a child that needed the type of attention elsie needed and also take care of her other 4 children and the home. Henrietta went out there quite often to visit Elsie. did some terrible things happen to people who were in those type of Institutions . yes sadly they did and Elsie was probably one of those.
      but get your facts straight. check out The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca skloot from the library it also comes in audio books. one of the things that we have to do in this case, is to not spread more lies. The whole book was about uncovering the truth. and for you not to spread falsehoods because it helps further some kind of hateful agenda you might have comma is kind of doing a disservice to the whole thing including Henrietta and Elsie. learn the truth and then speak the truth.

    Where are they getting the information for this video? Some of it is in direct contradiction to the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Skloot interviewed the family and as many surviving doctors and technicians as she could. The doctor didn't give the cells a code name for fear of being sued. He used the first two initials of the names for ALL of the cells from patients that were sampled, and he tried for 20 years to grow "immortal" cell lines. It was 1951, they didn't think about asking for consent from ANY patient for taking cells from tissue that would otherwise be discarded from surgery.

How often does HPV create human cells that are bright purple with 80 chromosomes? Has there ever been more cells like (or at least extremely similar) this found in a human? Do cancer cells even have their own particular DNA or genome map? Probably.....but this fascinating video has made me think....Thanks for the upload....
