Finally. I’m a former scientist and used HeLa cells throughout my education and career, never knowing that they came from Henrietta Lacks. I was so angry when I did find out and also became aware that the company NEVER compensated her family. It’s never too late to do right.

I think that would mean they would have to legally become part owners or part founders of HeLa cells in order for that to happen. That would be another fight. Maybe one of her great great grandchildren might pursue that if they’re even allowed because we don’t know the terms of this settlement.

What's so ironic (at the least) is that, so many who wish she never existed, actually exist because she existed. No matter how many millions of lives she saved or the loved ones who cherrish(ed) their survival, many of them will never appreciate what she has done and how they benefited from her existence.

I remember reading her story and just being dumbfounded that all of us have benefitted from her suffering (read her story) in the form of vaccines and cancer treatments, etc and yet her family (her descendants) couldn't even afford health insurance. They didn't just steal her cells just for the sake of stealing and testing them. Henrietta's cells were "special". The cells continued to grow and replicate outside of her body in a lab environment as if they were immortal. THAT'S why the THIEVES stole them. Even now, her cells continue to multiply and no one really knows why. Thus the title "The Immortal Henrietta Lacks". ❤

Happy that this happened but I'm wondering how much they got? I bet it was mere crumbs compared to how much the companies profited from it.

I read the book on the history of this woman twice now. The amount of BS and lack of credit they all had to go through was unreal.

I remember reading biographies on Ms Lanks in high school as I was considering different fields of medicine. I hope this is the beginning of offerings to her family with many more to come.

I read Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," and it was a very moving book. I was so angry that it took this long for the Lacks to finally get justice. It's never too late to do the right thing. I wish Deborah Lacks were still alive, but at least, the family is still around to see Henrietta's story be told and to receive compensation due to them after the biotech companies made billions over her cells.
