I feel like the Ginny D video about D&D in a castle was a kind of mea culpa about taking on more than she could handle, getting imposter syndrome while doing it, and then getting a lot of good advice from very talented and experienced DMs. I respect that she admitted to the problem in the video (which is how any of us actually know about it) and shared the whole experience. I think a lot of new GMs suffer through that feeling as well. So I feel it was a useful video in that respect. Having run many games myself in many systems I don't really get paid GMing especially since most of them would be less experienced than me. When I play with new GMs I usually end up teaching them something in a respectful way. I don't mind doing that but I definitely don't want to pay for the privilege, much less pay $3k for it. I'm kind of wondering if that's the issue here or if it's something more specific to Ginny?
There wouldn't be an issue if she just showed up and felt out of her depth and shared the experience. That would actually be admirable. The issue is her narcissistic lack of care. She knew what she was being sold as and took pay to go be falsely advertised. Then she didn't even bother to do thr bare minimum basics. It was bad enough she did that for years on her channel, but at worst a viewer might feel misled or like their time was wasted because she didn't even care enough to read the DMG before posing as an expert... But she took a large sum of money AND STILL couldn't be bothered. Imagine you win a contest. The prize? A chance at a million dollars. All you have to do is make a 45 yard field goal during half time at the National Championship Game. They tell you "kick it yourself, you get the million or you can have a legendary pro try for 10k." You pick the safe money, let the pro kick. Out walks QB Drew Brees. Legendary Pro. Not a kicker. Not only that, but you then find out he accepted the job knowing he wasn't a kicker and didn't even practice in the time leading up. You get nothing when he flubs the kick. Do you feel cheated when you got a "pro" but not a "pro kicker"? Do you feel he did you wrong not just by accepting the gig, but by not even practicing his kick? That's what she did. 5e expert "Celebrity DM", for thousands of dollars... Didn't even read the core book that teaches her how to be a basic level DM.
@@drivinganddragons1818 If we use your analogy it would be the paying players who get to decide whether she made that field goal or not. Reportedly they thought she made it. But we don't know if they were doing some post-purchase rationalizating. Or that Ginny is a reliable narrator. Either of these being true would certainly make your take on it the right one. I'm not quite sure which way things fall on this so I didn't really make a judgement. I think I'm just not offended because while I can imagine a lot of things, the thought of being on either end of the GM screen of a $3-5k/seat RPG game just blows my mind. I'd struggle to imagine myself involved with a game that cost a tenth of that! So yeah, I get your opinion even if I haven't quite landed there myself. Makes perfect sense.
Even if she "made the field goal" you would still be less than charitable towards that player if you found out they phoned it in and did no practice or prep. Just because it worked out doesn't change the apathy and lack of effort. That said, I'm also going off this combined with how she presents info in other videos and how she treats others on social media. It all adds up to a person with very few redeeming qualities. As for D&D in a castle, if that's your thing, it's not nearly as extreme as it sounds. I have been planning to attend the Monaco Grand Prix for years and that trip, while almost 20k when it's all said and done, has a bunch of options where I can pay over time and even reduce costs to get it closer to 12-13k... And it's a trip to Monte Carlo, which is pretty awesome on its own. I'd also be willing to spend a pretty penny to go through French wine country or on the bourbon trail. Now would I ever see shelling out 7k to play D&D and sleep in a castle? Hell no. But I can understand it because there are bucket list vacations I want to take that plenty of people would say "15 Gs to watch a pretentious engineering contest where really fast gocarts go in circles? That just baffles me"
Damn. I was pretty happy with Mexican orcs haha. Ive been making them Mexican in all my games because im Mexican and I love orcs. But yeah WotC suck ass.
In fairness the DMG used to contain all the rules. Now all the rules are in the Player’s Handbook. I DM my kids 5e all the time. I almost never look in the 5e DMG. I DM my old high school friends in 1e. Look in the 1e DMG all the time. I pretty much look at the book that contains all the combat rules…
I would agree, but there's a key difference in kind here when you talk about a person who puts on the mantle of an expert. Imagine two people talking about ecenomic policy. One is just having a casual discussion with you, the other is giving a paid lecture at your local university. Neither has read the details of the current ecenomic policies of the administration. Does either need to read the details to get a good idea how things will go? No. But one is out there making money off their analysis as an expert. That's what's happening here.
GD got irritated with me because I asked her where her APs are. Her fan base voted for her to run a game live and she started to panic. She’s an imposter. She’s an it girl, pick me. She plays but she’s not the expert she believes herself to be. Also, in before indestructaboy comes here to attack you via video.
Ahhh Indestructasoy. Desperate to be be picked as she is the apple of his socket. When he's not squinting at femboys. Yeah she's a poser and anyone who cares to pay attention knows it.
Eh, depends on who you're talking about in the BroSR. A few certainly fit that description but others are more like Manosphere personalities and fellow travelers or people who just want something that more closely simulates "real life"

Greetings! Good program, sir! Indeed, way back, I used to think Ginny Di was just a happy, kind, somewhat silly D&D gamer girl that as she mentioned in an early video, "Brought the chirpy pre-school teacher energy" or something like that. I watched some of her videos, which mostly gave basic, as you say, "Generic" advice and commentary about D&D, but with a happy, chirpy presentation. I thought she was cute, but essentially harmless and sweet. Then, I saw the video by my friend, Diversity & Dragons, where he brought the receipts on Ginny Di being a raging Leftist, full of her own hatred, bigotry, and venom. My eyes were certainly opened! *Laughing* Perhaps I am at something of a disadvantage, because I take people based on their presentation, and their own individual videos. I don't hang out on "X", or Facebook, or Instagram. Still, learning her true attitudes and positions was disheartening. Not that I'm some pathetic simp, I had just held out hope that she was a normal, happy gamer girl that was actually nice and sweet. Instead, she is a sad, terrible person. Oh well, right? It is disappointing, though. I like what I hear about Harmony Ginger. Honestly, though, I don't really become a "Fan" or some kind of obsessed fanatic about anyone, especially online. My life is too busy to be that concerned about someone online. Good program, again, and funny, too! I like your sense of humour, presentation, and straight forward commentary! Keep up the good work! @@SHARK-yq5pr thank you sir and welcome to the channel. Harmony is pretty down to earth and cool to talk to. Seems like same chick on X, on UA-cam, in Discord, and at cons. I always find it funny how some people are above reproach for no reason while others cant do anything right even if Jesus Christ himself were to say they're right
It depends a lot on the situation. Some just have tribal sycophants and no matter what, they're right. If you don't agree you're not part of the tribe and that means you're an enemy. Then there's people like Clowndor who is such a narcissistic asshat that's demonstrably wrong on a regular basis and treats his opinions as facts. He fully deserves to be written off unless a significantly more reliable source backs him. I'm quickly putting TBE in that boat too. Though he is far, far more credible than the bird brain, he behaves the same way regarding his fringe opinions he treats as facts.
Can you give an example of "who is above reproach". I personally don't know anyone on UA-cam or X, even remotely associated with our hobby, that hasn't been attacked or banned for his / her views.
@@DM_Bluddworth other than Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, I don't know of anyone beyond reproach, but I've seen a whole lot of self proclaimed experts on X and YT who act like it and even more sycophantic stans who act like it for them.
@@drivinganddragons1818 that is my point. Some might think they are beyond reproach, or they white knight for those they think should be, but everyone including Jesus and the Mother Mary do get attacked on the internet. I was questioning Adam Pender’s claim that some people are above reproach. It is impossible that anyone is given that status by everyone. It only takes one contrarian voice, and our hobby has a legion of those.
@@DM_Bluddworth I don't think he implying a person actually is above reproach, but that some people get treated that way by their fan base. I can see that. @@tomtom7955 another option is be the GM. "hey guys, this is what I'm running, if you want to play, you're more than welcome". That AI hot take is questionable. AI is certainly the INVESTORS' baby right now, and everyone is running around trying to implement it because it's the hot new thing. Just like sourcing everything to China was the hot thing in the business world... right up until it wasn't anymore, because it wasn't all it was sold as. AI will probably be a useful tool for certain things, but whether it's really "the future" is just as questionable as the idea that flying cars was the future back in the 50s.
@@spacerx well we will never know about flying cars since government regulations neutered automotive progress in the 70s. That said, it's not the same thing here. AI a more like the robotic assembly line. It started as automated tools controlled and inspected by human workers. It progressed to a human worker spot checking dozens of autonomous robot workers that require almost no input. AI is already a tremendous game changer in several areas, most notably format editing, research, and preliminary design. There's simply no universe where a human or team of humans can more efficiently compile raw data than even a team of skilled researchers. It's definitely the future in much the same way nail guns and laser levels were the future of professional carpentry.
I think it is the future in the sense that it is what industries will be using whether it is "the best" thing or not. Think about something as cruel and archaic as human slavery, the romans could have invented steam power, they could have had an industrial society. But they didn't NEED to, because they had slaves. The current generation of Ai is the same way, it gets the job done just enough, and in a way that benefits those in power enough, that it will likely be the future we end up with (for now). Whether there is a better tool or not, Ai will be used because it is the neo slave. Why use a steam engine when you have a fleet of slaves? Why use something other than Ai when it can do the trick? I don't agree with either of those things and find it very tragic, but that's the way it looks to me.
I have always said three types of games / play styles fall within the OSR. The OS is common, Old School remains uniform, however some might argue over what = “Old”. For me, 30+ years old is old school. The “R” is where the variance comes into play. Renaissance (literally meaning rebirth) but not an exact copy of is where the retro clones fall. Revival (to bring back to the original) is when you run or play the actual older system or edition. Finally, Role Playing or Rules which means you are adopting an old school play style which can be done with a modern TTRPG. A really important note, and I will die on this hill. The OSR is NOT just Dungeons & Dragons or its derivatives. Any game system, old enough, can be considered part of the OSR. If you’re running Traveller 1E, that’s OSR. Call of Cthulhu 2E = OSR. Bushido = OSR. MERPS or GURPS 2E = OSR, etc. etc. Only outsiders and exiles try to put a negative connotation to OSR. Only those that don’t understand the meaning of the words Renaissance and or Revival don’t differentiate between the two and wrongly believe OSR is one monolithic thing. There is nothing wrong with the OSR having several segments to it, that doesn’t mean there is a fracturing within the “community” because it isn’t a community. Participating as an OSR Game Master or Player simply means there are certain games or play styles that you prefer to play…. Period! It doesn’t mean your in some kind of a club, nor does it mean you are exclusive to OSR gaming.
I would like to agree and the initial reality is probably far closer to your view point than what had come of it. Unfortunately, much like what happens in any other movement throughout history, OSR has taken on a separate meaning that has replaced the original in public consciousness. True, a lot of it comes from those on the outside looking in, but they outnumber the OSR by orders of magnitude even when we give OSR the broadest possible definition. I don't want to use the very easy modern German example, so instead, think about the French Revolution. The Jacobin Club started as a faction militantly in support of strict republicanism. They were champions of maintaining the power with the people of France. The they were hijacked by Robespierre and will forever be remembered as tyrants responsible for the Reign of Terror. There's a perception is reality thing that people who care about the OSR as you describe it need to consider as they collectively rebrand.
@@drivinganddragons1818 I disagree with "the need to rebrand" because rebranding will not end those that are looking to attack those that prefer to run or play the older editions or use the older style of play at their tables. We need to ignore the effort by outsiders or jealous adversaries or at most reclaim the OSR as not being a community, movement or some "design philosophy" but simply a preference of play. As for the group on the attack, there is a common claim that they make, "I've been kicked out of the OSR". I wish I could post a meme "One does not simply get kicked out of his own preference of play". What they got kicked out of was social media servers (ie Discord groups) or they aren't invited to livestreams or some other social activity and in almost every one of those cases it was due to their negativity and other toxic behaviors. Going back to Elementary School Report Cards, those individuals probably had the comment "Does not play well with others".
I don't think we disagree here. My point is trying to rebrand OSR does no good if you just take the same problems with you. Of course, your view of the OSR is different than the community view many others have and the two are not 100% compatible. But you are certainly correct that many of those "kicked out of the OSR" are simply those like Clowndor who found out that nobody wants to talk to you when you're a colossal prick to everyone who even slightly disagrees with you.
The OSR movement was founded on D&D retroclones. Anything that isn't based around D&D retroclones may be cool. It might be old-fashioned, or even old school. It might be adjacent. It could very well be a spin-off. But it can't be OSR, because the OSR was built on the D&D retroclones. And I say that as a guy who never considered himself part of the OSR, but I'm sympathetic to much of what they're doing (and very disinterested in much of what they were doing too.) But if you start expanding it like that to anything that's vaguely "oldish" then the OSR is a meaningless term. It's just a marketing buzzword.
@@spacerx that depends on use and context. Regardless of how much Pundit may not like it, OSR as a school of design thought evolved to be OSR as a movement and OSR as a philosophy and OSR as a short hand for a specific segment of the player base. This leads to people needing to clearly define their terms or be very conscious of context.

No, its not a shot at anyone. It's more a PSA to the general OSR community. While calling the segment of the player base currently called OSR "Classic Gamers/ing" is a good thing as it separates the movement/trend/community from the school of game design, the general climate from which most are coming is that OSR has gotten a sullied reputation from things like the BroSR and other polarizing personalities in the general sphere of OSR games and their behaviors towards not just each other, but players who live TTRPGs but don't share their philosophies. (For example, people who start shouting "tourist" at anybody focused on or preferring a newer edition or version of a game than them as opposed to reserving it for people like Generic Ginny who is only in the hobby because she was riding a fad.) My point is that simply separating off from the OSR label isn't going to fix the issue with perception unless a change in behavior accompanies it.
@drivinganddragons1818 tenkar, delver, and nerdcognito are my introduction to before 3e. All of them have some form of passionate dislike for my preferred edition, lol.
I would agree, but there's a key difference in kind here when you talk about a person who puts on the mantle of an expert. Imagine two people talking about ecenomic policy. One is just having a casual discussion with you, the other is giving a paid lecture at your local university. Neither has read the details of the current ecenomic policies of the administration. Does either need to read the details to get a good idea how things will go? No. But one is out there making money off their analysis as an expert. That's what's happening here.

*Laughing*
Perhaps I am at something of a disadvantage, because I take people based on their presentation, and their own individual videos.

@@DM_Bluddworth I don't think he implying a person actually is above reproach, but that some people get treated that way by their fan base.

@@froggirec it's a thing. It's not going away. I don't see how ignoring it would help

Is Classic gamers a shot at Nerdcognito?
No, its not a shot at anyone. It's more a PSA to the general OSR community. While calling the segment of the player base currently called OSR "Classic Gamers/ing" is a good thing as it separates the movement/trend/community from the school of game design, the general climate from which most are coming is that OSR has gotten a sullied reputation from things like the BroSR and other polarizing personalities in the general sphere of OSR games and their behaviors towards not just each other, but players who live TTRPGs but don't share their philosophies. (For example, people who start shouting "tourist" at anybody focused on or preferring a newer edition or version of a game than them as opposed to reserving it for people like Generic Ginny who is only in the hobby because she was riding a fad.)
My point is that simply separating off from the OSR label isn't going to fix the issue with perception unless a change in behavior accompanies it.
@drivinganddragons1818 tenkar, delver, and nerdcognito are my introduction to before 3e. All of them have some form of passionate dislike for my preferred edition, lol.
