The Police were my favorite band when I grew up. The 80s were an amazing time to be a kid. You have mad skills, kiddo. Stuart Copeland is one of the best ever.
There's a reason you see very few people covering Stewart Copeland or Danny Carey and it's because, not only does it take monster skill, but it also requires a certain finesse and attention to small details that not every drummer has or will ever acquire. Sure, a lot of drummers can play play 20983457240985272534 beats per second with one hand (awesome stuff), but not a lot of drummers have the wicked attention to detail and master class skills that Stewart and Danny have. You gotta have balls to cover either one of these drummers and Sam Wu nails Stewart Copeland perfectly. You could use a better environment and recording gear, but the point is that you absolutely nailed this song.
He plays the same eighth-note pattern on the ride the whole way through, while Copeland was changing up time signatures, throwing in off-beat triplets, etc. He blows through most of the finesse moves in each chorus, only nailing the tom patterns, and plays a lot of the same licks over and over. Maybe concentrate less on flipping sticks and more on the feel of the song.
Fantastic. Great song, great cover. Of all the instruments I think drums are the most satisfying to watch, particularly when the drummer makes it look so effortless.
When i saw the video title i said stewart Copeland can't really be copied. Never saw a police drum cover. Its like trying to do a jeff beck cover. Which is impossible. But the kid really did a great job. Very impressed. Keep it up .
Very good, Sam. Saw the Cops a few times in the 80's. Loved them. Stewart would dig your playing, no doubt. Keep playing and NEVER give up your dream, if you want to play music.
This is great, buddy. I appreciate you actually pay attention to the instrument and not other superficial bullshit that takes you nowhere. Musicality is greatly appreciated 👏
Great Job, I can't wait to see how you play when you're 25. Remember to be ferocious, paint with a feather not with a fire hose and remember to always swing.
I’ve been listening very closely to Stewart’s drumming for 45 years. I learned several things from watching this video. Phenomenal job! 👊
