I never stop thinking about what’s happening in this day and age with the animation industry. And it’s truly heartbreaking to see. I always wanted to go the industry route because my dream originally was to work for Cartoon Network. But as I’ve gotten older my plans have really changed. I hope to one day create my own small animation studio completely focused on traditional hand-drawn animation. So my concepts for cartoons can come to life. Hopefully one day I can achieve this dream of mine.

It's probably why most artists now HAVE to be business people and set up their own shop either online, in person, or both. Since I haven't met an artist in the animation who is JUST an animation artist. 😢

About 10 years ago I was very closed to moving to Burbank (from Cape Town, South Africa) to pursue a career in animation. I had connections with a then Marvel animation director and was assured I had the talent to succeed in the industry. But after doing the research and specifically listening to a ton of Stephen Silver's youtube videos about the industry and how criminal it was, I decided this wasn't the route for me. I did eventually end up working in animation (3 years later) but for advertising at a smaller animation studio that works for US and UK brands. You get permanent positions, solid pay, you learn a lot from jumping around to different projects, you can upskill a lot and you can make a lot of money working in that form of animation. I appreciate Stephen for how open he is about the pitfalls of the animation industry but it really just scared me away from it. Even after all this time, not much has changed. Thanks for sharing this because I do feel that it needs to be spoken about as much as possible.

if my skills improve enough in animation i would probably help make indie animations or do commissions. Originally i wanted animation as a career in my early teens, but after hearing the horror stories people go though in the filed.Especially anime animators get overworked and paid horribly i reconsidered. if i do animation it probably going to be a side job but not main source of income.I have mad respect for animators,3d artist, programmers, game developers and anything else art and programming related going to shows, movie vfx, game development, and animated movies.Because this stuff ain't easy and it take a lot of time.

i think we must fight harder and harder to make the harsh treatment that the animators who are working in the animation industry, to fight harder to get equal pay, to fight harder to earn the respect they deserve. i get that indie animation is the way to go but all they do is letting the studios who control the animators keep the money and respect from them, and it's sickening for me that these hard working animators aren't getting the respect they get, only despair, we need to support the animators.

The problem is also making such short deadlines compared to the pay .I don't get that films like Shrek ,how to train your Dragon, toy story, etc they made the animation business big and earned a lot, They were fresh animation ideas, yet we keep making sequels and TV shows that doesn't earn the same amount and in the end is green-lit for production, also they keep targeting kids more and more as films becomes sequels. instead of digging into more creative stories for both adults and teens or making good sequels to films that actually need a sequel. Like I actually liked Shrek forever after I was quite shocked.

Indie projects are amazing and it’s what I’m most excited about moving forward, but if you’re in the industry proper PLEASE get active in your unions if you have them or with unionization efforts if you don’t. Not saying they’re perfect solutions, but if you can clean up your union leadership or get the ball rolling on a union with passionate leadership with integrity, you’ll be in an exponentially better position to bargain collectively rather than begging individually. If unions weren’t better for you, these major players wouldn’t be doing everything in their power to stop you from joining up with or starting them.

If you’re bargaining with a major studio or corporation, yes. As an individual, they can tell you to go pound sand. If you and all your fellow animators threaten to stop production, they have to listen.
