Mary Karr is what I have internalized to be the personification of my best self. She encompasses everything I want to be known for as a writer. Her writing style is yet unmatched in my opinion. She inspired me years ago when I read cherry and then the liars club, to dedicate my life to art as a whole. Her ability to turn raunchy, disturbing experiences into art is beyond me. I have so much respect and unwavering support for this woman no matter how her writing evolves. It has been my pleasure to observe the growth and evolution of her voice throughout her memoirs and poetry and I hope to someday follow in her footsteps and make a name for myself doing my most primitive work. Bless you Mary

I just came across Mary moments ago. If I'd known of her longer, I think I have the same thing to say. Great fascinating compelling listening.

I know her from the page, from audiobooks, and from podcast interviews. And I had no idea she was this beautiful.
I don't mean physically beautiful, though she is obviously that and it contributes somehow to this new impression of her, of course. But...seeing her speak, watching the thoughts play in her eyes and on her face, and matching that to the familar voice...it's oddly overwhelming.
My compliments to the author! And thank you for the wisdom and the books.

The Liars Club changed my view of memoir forever. I was fortunate enough to study with George Saunders during my time at SU. I woefully regret never having the chance to meet Mary Karr. I will add no more at risk of sounding like a fan girl!

This is a great interview, but the background music is rather distracting. I'd love to see Mary Karr do a Master Class!

I took a class on writing literary non-fiction to learn how a way to write about my relationship with my brother and found out that 100% honesty is not that interesting to others. But don't tell anybody!

What did you end up writing? Were you able to explore your relationship with your brother through writing? And if so, did you gain a new perspective? Take care. Cheers.

@@AndySalinger33 Time has helped with my perspective but the older we get the further apart we are so that more and more all we have is what I've been trying to write about for 20 years now.

To write memoir Karr says you have to find your voice. You can't sound like anybody else. I agree because my memoir teacher Edvige Giunta said to me "Ayesha you nailed voice". I knew I had found my voice as a memoir writer!

I can’t remember where I first heard of Mary Kate, but I’m reading The Liar’s Club on this cold and wet Vancouver night…

1:30-----Ironic that in an age of disbelief in all authority, we fall back on subjectivity, "the self," since the separate ego is the biggest illusion of them all.

As much as this was a great interview and I learned a lot, I do wish that Americans would not punctuate many of their sentences with "kind of".

Here here. Drives me up a wall. “This kind of” “This sort of”. I felt it important to write this kind of response that speaks to your sort of observation.

Yeah. She's has every annoying verbal habbit that americans can offer, from her voice to the way she forces the "f word" into sentences. (See New York Times Festival panel on DFW)
