Look, I know I told everyone two years ago that we'd run back an 8-Man draft every time Wizards released Conspiracy. I don't think anyone at that time thought that would happen. We don't have a draft for you, but we do have a super entertaining game of commander that comes with everything you'd expect from us. Forgive us this time and I hope this special episode makes it up to you!
Im just saying that you would have won on the turn you cast Kaya by just casting her and draining Jeremy to 2 life and just sitting up the 4 mana for the comeuppance you had so you couldnt die on his attack and drain him the last 2 next turn.
Kaya 0 ability is an "Or" Effect. It doesn't exile itself AND up to one creature. Also I screamed at my monitor when Suarez discarded the damnation the first time. I thought it would cost him the game. It did.
Jeramy was at 4 life. Justin had 8 mana. He had been holding Comeuppance which cost 4 and just drew kaya which is 4 too. Play Kaya minus to make Jeramy lose 2 life. Hold up comeuppance which protects him and kaya. Then minus again on his turn. Draining 4 life total. Unless I'm missing something.
So following that line of play, Jeremy would've been left with his creatures on board. He proceeds to attack Justin, who blanks the attack, and Jeremy can just ult and tutor up a scooze and gain a bunch of life, leaving justin dead on the following turn as well.
Jeremy, seeing that one more -1 from Kaya would kill him, could have easily used the Garruk emblem to search for creatures that gain him life, such as the Scavenging Ooze mentioned above. This is assuming, of course, that he noticed Justin had mana left untapped and played it safe.
You are correct to assume he could have made that line of play, but we will never know. He could have not made that play because he wasn't thinking he would get blown out by a fog into Kayla minus, but I do believe it was Justin's best line of play to give him the best chance of winning. We will never know.
I could be crazy, but I'm pretty sure that an "until your next turn" effect lasts til the next turn of the controller of the creature at the time of the spell or ability resolution, no matter what change of control happens after resolution. Parnell's walker applies such an effect to all creatures he controls at the time of Sorin's activation. If I'm wrong somebody please correct me XD
Man, love these between-season episodes! Like an unexpected Christmas present! PS. Kaya's first ability says "or", not "and/or". You only get to exile 1 thing, either herself or a creature. Ended up not mattering, but it seemed like it would at the time.
1:26:22 Stephen missed an attack with Stonehewer Giant (vigilance) and could have used its ability after blocks were declared, getting any equipment on any creature that suited the situation. God damn I love that card.
Yup. Justin comments about that one later, talking about Vigilance that "wasn't used". He should have been able to kill Jeremy with that line. Even if he wanted to hold Stonehewer back for some reason, just giving the Reckoner a Sunforger after blocks kills him.
if you mean at the end, you forget hr still had ulamog. sure he would have lost 2 life but next turn he would have killed her with Ulamog (while mill exiling Justin) and then still have gotten off Garruk.
The interaction should have been: Play Kaya, -1, pass turn. Cast Comeuppance on Jeremy's attack step. -1 Kaya, win game. Comeuppance would've prevented any damage dealt by Jeremy, so Kaya and Justin would've lived. The fact that he loses 20 cards from his deck is irrelevant. Ulting Garruk was also Irrelevant.
Myriad and melee don't work together well at all. Myriad copies are never declared attacking which both means they don't trigger their melee, and they don't count as having "attacked" that player, so they don't benefit from melee or contribute to it.
They half work together, the creatures brought in attacking won't get any bonuses themselves but the total number of opponents attacked would increase for other triggers.
It would not. They were not "Attacked" according to the game rules. They are put in attacking, so they were never declared attackers. In order to be "attacked" you need to have an attacker declared against you.
45:02 John is wrong. His creature did have +1/+0 and lifelink that turn. According to CR 611.2c, a spell/ability that creates continuous effect that modifies characteristics of a permanent (or changes the controller thereof) will determine the set of affected permanents as it resolves. After that point, the set DOESN'T CHANGE even if the permanent changes to no longer meet the criteria. Also, Kaysa says "OR a creature"
You're right. Melee triggers, but since Stephen wasn't attacking any opponents they don't get +1/+1. I don't blame them much for this one it's a little confusing.
Actually, you do attack planeswalkers. You only redirect non-combat damage. This is why some cards say "Can't attack you or planeswalkers you control" etc.
The issue here is that plansewalkers actually count as opponents but like the above article says you can't count both a plansewalker and it's controller
If you ain't gonna bother to read the story, probably best to not make assumptions. Pretty sure you can even see in the flavor text that Adriana is against Marchesa after Kaya exercises Brago.
As a suggestion for either the next Commander VS, or the one after Kaladesh, this is how everyone should do their commanders Justin: Glissa(either voltron version or the creatureless control kind) Stephen: Angel Tribal with Bruna as the commander Jeremy: Chaos Arjun(bunches of cards with random causing effects) Suarez: Nekuzar hate
I'm always so excited to see your content, thanks for the awesome video as always. Not sure if you're looking to do more non legends as commanders but I think the Fate Reforged wedge mythic cycle would make for some really interesting decks, soulfire grandmaster hype!
Wow. Justin didn't even lose. Since avenger was the last one cast, and the emblem trigger is on cast, craterhoof came in before the tokens, and got a heck of a lot less triggers.
Awesome stuff guys! And I agree that conspiracy 2 came with a lot of quality for commander. If you really want to try something crazy mid seasons try adding planes to a game! Planechase commander is certainly unusual and gets nuts! Cheers!
hell yeah, i'm so hyped for leovold! i'm trying him out since his release and he is absolutely insane! i run him along with some windfall effects, teferis puzzlebox to lock opponents out, then kill them with hermit druid/doomsday into labman. i'm excited to see your version of the leovold deck :)
Im super sad that Jeremy did not have Omnath, Locus of Mana, as Omanth with Selvala not only doubles omanths power/toughness it also produces ridiculous amounts of mana
Congrats to team #HolyGuacaNoelly! Everyone had interesting decks, but not everyone drew the cards to shine. It happens. Thanks for the interim video, guys. :)
big fan of the series, you guys should play magic cards based on magic players as commanders next season. (tiago-snapcaster, finkel-shadowmage, bob-confidant, kai-voidmage)
I always wanted to try doing this, Only 4 CMC and higher cards and possibly doing 125 to 150 card decks. I call it Giant Generals, opposite of tiny leaders.
Hahahaha. I never got shocked by something like this. I found it too funny. My man Green playing Selvala? That got so unexpected, until I noticed they are siting differently
(Jeremy) Up now, sorry for the delay. We have to wait for the article to go live on the site and we like to set the video live a bit earlier than that on here as a thanks to our subscribers.
I'd like to see a two-headed giant format, where both team members play a different version of the same commander. Such as: Teferi, Selvala, Ob Nixilis, Marchesa, Grenzo, Teysa, etc.
Justin should have played Kaya's second ability and left mana for the Comeuppance in his last turn. I would have done that with the information he had. xD
Let this be a lesson to all, if you discard all your opponent's hands while you sit with a hand full of cards, you'll likely be the first to go, and with good reason
I think as Avenger of zendikar was cast as the last of the 4 creatures the Emblem trigger (and the craterhoof trigger) would have resolved BEFORE the tokens entered the battlefield
They were shortcutting basically all of that, but yes, technically speaking it doesn't work that way. Craterhoof would see eight creatures-- Nylea, itself, Elves, Whisperer, Slime, Regal Force, Soul, and Greenwarden. Then his two creatures that can attack each get +8/+8 and he hits Justin for 27, killing him anyway.
Was thinking that you could possibly have these between-season games have a little more weight and make them more of things that are must-watch for those who enjoy the seasons. Obviously you don't want to award any points on a non-seasonal game, but maybe have who goes first up for grabs. If there's only one game between seasons, the winner gets to go first. If there are two games between seasons, have just those two winners roll off.
2 things: 1 is that the planeswalker Kaya is her OR one creature not both... So Justin can't pick Kaya and The Eldrazi 2, he should -1 Kaya to deal one to Jeremy down from 4 to 2, then use his Comeuperance to act as a fog to then next turn finish Jeremy off with -1 Kaya deal 2 to 0...
as stated in a thread above if he did it that way he still would of lost unless jeremy miss played. cause jeremy attacks for lethal gets fogged then emblems and fetches life game and kills him next turn or soon after.
Snipcaster Mage. You can buy them from Star City Games; one of the many things that this series does for them is show off some of their products like this. I've never bought them so I can't speak to their quality, but they're priced competitively against the hypermats that I use.
Stephen could have won if he had played Comeuppance when Ulamog was played, milled himself twenty, and almost every creature on Jeremy's side would have been dead to killing itself. Thus giving Stephen a chance to take Justin and Jeremy out his next turn. #WiseMoves
I know this comment might not get read, but if you are the monarch you draw a card regardless since it's not a may ability. So you can't say "I won't draw a card but you will lose 1 life and you all will lose 1 life" since the creature doesn't say "Instead of drawing a card if you are the monarch, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life". You get both effects.
Paliano is the City, FIORA is the plane
Look, I know I told everyone two years ago that we'd run back an 8-Man draft every time Wizards released Conspiracy. I don't think anyone at that time thought that would happen. We don't have a draft for you, but we do have a super entertaining game of commander that comes with everything you'd expect from us. The cream rises to the top. The four of you took this series to the next level. Especially Suarez.
Im just saying that you would have won on the turn you cast Kaya by just casting her and draining Jeremy to 2 life and just sitting up the 4 mana for the comeuppance you had so you couldnt die on his attack and drain him the last 2 next turn.
Leovold vs fair commanders. Good luck.
selvala can win turn 3 though, with the right cards
In my play group, someone played Leovold then Teferi's Puzzle Box. We then all proceeded to beat the hell out of him.
a lot of commanders can win turn 3....
i know that, i was just referring to the comment saying selvala was a fair commander, when it's really not
Leovold has been decidedly meh in more competitive matches.
Paliano is the city, Fiora is the plane
Kaya's 0 ability exiles her or a creature, not both.
RIP to Wes dog. John playing spike makes me happy.
God dammit Stephen, if there is a way to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory, you'll find it.
Has anyone noticed that the Monarch token has a typo. It just says "at the beginning your end step" instead of "at the beginning OF your end step"
Kaya 0 ability is an "Or" Effect. It doesn't exile itself AND up to one creature. Also I screamed at my monitor when Suarez discarded the damnation the first time. I thought it would cost him the game. It did.
Justin you could have won! Play kaya then minus. Then hold up fog. Then on your next turn minus again!
Jeremy wasnt dead to Kaya either from what I saw. I definitely saw a Scooze in the deck that would've saved him.

Great vid! Still sad about Wes leaving but I love Jeremy and John is cool.
Really appreciated that you remembered my comment, Justin
Woohoo! Here we go #teamparnell #LustinforJustin !
Also, the plane is called Fiora ;) Paliano is the capital IIRC
Glad they made this. Didn't know Monarch had an emblem effect or moved around. Good video guys :)
I could be crazy, but I'm pretty sure that an "until your next turn" effect lasts til the next turn of the controller of the creature at the time of the spell or ability resolution, no matter what change of control happens after resolution. PS.
Kaya's first ability says "or", not "and/or". You only get to exile 1 thing, either herself or a creature. Ended up not mattering, but it seemed like it would at the time.
Paliano isn't a plane, it's a city on the plane of Fiora.
John Miller yes another person who understands lore
1:26:22 Stephen missed an attack with Stonehewer Giant (vigilance) and could have used its ability after blocks were declared, getting any equipment on any creature that suited the situation. God damn I love that card.
Yup. Justin comments about that one later, talking about Vigilance that "wasn't used". He should have been able to kill Jeremy with that line. Even if he wanted to hold Stonehewer back for some reason, just giving the Reckoner a Sunforger after blocks kills him.
Plane is fiora, not paliano. Paliano is a city. Not trying to be an asshole, just answering the first question.
Ahhh no1 picked Grenzo for the mono red deck :(
There were enough Mountains drawn last season.
No sense trying to break the curse outside of a season.
44:00 the sequencing here just breaks my heart
If Paliano it's ment to be pronunced in Italian you did a great job Justin, it was almost perfect
Couldnt Justin have won if he played didnt wrath and instead held up Comeuperance and -1 his plainswalker, then next turn -1'd again?
yeah was my thought too.
if you mean at the end, you forget hr still had ulamog. sure he would have lost 2 life but next turn he would have killed her with Ulamog (while mill exiling Justin) and then still have gotten off Garruk.

Comeuppance would've prevented any damage dealt by Jeremy, so Kaya and Justin would've lived. The fact that he loses 20 cards from his deck is irrelevant. Ulting Garruk was also Irrelevant.
Jon was really in his element in this episode. This was a fun game to watch all around.
Myriad and melee don't work together well at all. Myriad copies are never declared attacking which both means they don't trigger their melee, and they don't count as having "attacked" that player, so they don't benefit from melee or contribute to it.

It would not. They were not "Attacked" according to the game rules. They are put in attacking, so they were never declared attackers. In order to be "attacked" you need to have an attacker declared against you.
Such a fun episode! This was the best one yall have done imo!
I love Jonathan's "snipcaster mage" sleeves.
I think this is the second time I have seen Comeuppance in Justin's hand, and he taps out...why?
I was wondering that, too.
Leovold-Cause who needs friends anyway
45:02 John is wrong. His creature did have +1/+0 and lifelink that turn.
According to CR 611.2c, a spell/ability that creates continuous effect that modifies characteristics of a permanent (or changes the controller thereof) will determine the set of affected permanents as it resolves. After that point, the set DOESN'T CHANGE even if the permanent changes to no longer meet the criteria.
Also, Kaysa says "OR a creature"
At 1:37:00 Justin played kaya wrong. She exiles herself OR up to one target creature.
43:30 would the nissa really die
Bcs melee triggers only against opponents
But if u attack a planeswalker is doesnt count as player, right?
magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/conspiracy-take-crown-mechanics-2016-08-15
You're right. Melee triggers, but since Stephen wasn't attacking any opponents they don't get +1/+1. I don't blame them much for this one it's a little confusing.
Except you don't attack planeswalkers. You attack players and redirect damage to the PW
"Attack Nissa" is just the short way of saying it.
Actually, you do attack planeswalkers. You only redirect non-combat damage. This is why some cards say "Can't attack you or planeswalkers you control" etc.
The issue here is that plansewalkers actually count as opponents but like the above article says you can't count both a plansewalker and it's controller
Multiple Always Sunny references. Dope.
queen marchesa is the cersei lannister of mtg.
If you ain't gonna bother to read the story, probably best to not make assumptions. Pretty sure you can even see in the flavor text that Adriana is against Marchesa after Kaya exercises Brago.

Nuts, I really wanted to see Stephen block Ulamog with Boros Reckoner and deal that 12 damage back to Jeremy...
(Jeremy) We talked about that after the game. Because Ulamog had trample, I would have only taken the 3 that was dealt to the Reckoner.
Gahhh, Justin you had it and it slipped away!
Plane is Fiora, Paliano is the main/capital city where Marchesa rules from.
Wow. Justin didn't even lose. Since avenger was the last one cast, and the emblem trigger is on cast, craterhoof came in before the tokens, and got a heck of a lot less triggers.
Run the numbers. He's not dead with nearly as much overkill, but he's still dead. 27 damage to his 21 life.
they shortcutted to save time if they order it correctly he does like 2 less then the maximum
This was awesome. I hope you guys do a Kaledesh commander video. Should be awesome :D
Jonathan why didn't you return the command tower with the bounce land so that your harbor didn't come back in tapped?
Awesome stuff guys! And I agree that conspiracy 2 came with a lot of quality for commander. If you really want to try something crazy mid seasons try adding planes to a game! Planechase commander is certainly unusual and gets nuts! Cheers!
They've actually done Planechase before.
hey guys, the sorin effect stays untill the end of your turn. I asked a judge about it. You controlled for a turn but still keeps the buff
Jeremy, when you played Nylea and Yeva on your main phase, it actually hurt me on the inside a little...
"smart play" is not his strength
hell yeah, i'm so hyped for leovold! i'm trying him out since his release and he is absolutely insane! i run him along with some windfall effects, teferis puzzlebox to lock opponents out, then kill them with hermit druid/doomsday into labman. i'm excited to see your version of the leovold deck :)
I love that monarch is now a part of EDH. Games now don't have to be all gang up on one person or slow roll your way to a win
Im super sad that Jeremy did not have Omnath, Locus of Mana, as Omanth with Selvala not only doubles omanths power/toughness it also produces ridiculous amounts of mana
Sick video, keep it up! I'll recommend we see 4x Monocolored commanders (no red to avoid that curse)
Justin made a mistake, when he used kaya's 0, you exile her OR a creature. not AND. He should not have exiled both kaya and ulamog
I love it when the red deck casts entomb. : >
YEEEEEEEAAAAH you're back!
It's only been 2 weeks since the conclusion of season 4 and I already missed the show like hell! Good to have an update!
Uh... Kaya definitely says "or" not "and..."
Also, Justin died at -40 if anyone was wondering.
if I can remember correctly the plane is fiora and paliano is the high class district
I always wanted to try doing this, Only 4 CMC and higher cards and possibly doing 125 to 150 card decks. I call it Giant Generals, opposite of tiny leaders.
Now that we are not in season, I think a video for General+99 basics would be fun. It may also make for a good april's fools
R.I.P. Leovold! Happy to see you go :P
Did Stephen elect to kill Jeremy with the Boros Reckoner trigger?
would've been hilarious if Jeremy fogged at 1:27:36
Do you guys have a deck list for leovold we can see?
I know that this question has probably already been asked 1,000 times, but what is the song at 7:08?
plane of fiora, high city of paliano.
In between seasons I would love to see a commander cube. You can draft not in paper then assemble the decks
Hahahaha. I never got shocked by something like this. I found it too funny. My man Green playing Selvala? That got so unexpected, until I noticed they are siting differently
Question for the SCG crew. The decks you guys play. Are they all your own cards or do you guys use the company cards?
What's the name of the dice game you played to decided who would start the game? I understand the rules, I just can't catch the name.
is there a decklist for each of these online somewhere?
Will be up in a couple hours. Always takes them a little longer
(Jeremy) Up now, sorry for the delay. We have to wait for the article to go live on the site and we like to set the video live a bit earlier than that on here as a thanks to our subscribers.
Why did the dusk watch recruiter flip if Stephen played Giselle
I'd like to see a two-headed giant format, where both team members play a different version of the same commander. Such as: Teferi, Selvala, Ob Nixilis, Marchesa, Grenzo, Teysa, etc.
They have actually, last season I believe. Both Akromas, versus both Sygg
Justin should have played Kaya's second ability and left mana for the Comeuppance in his last turn. I would have done that with the information he had. xD
Jon with duals and P9:D gj haha
Let this be a lesson to all, if you discard all your opponent's hands while you sit with a hand full of cards, you'll likely be the first to go, and with good reason
Please do a versus that has a Rashmi deck in it!! Im looking for ideas for her. She looks so much fun!
Guys imagine how well they get along outside of comander . Commander brings out the salt 🧂
If Stephen had blocked Ulamog with the Boros Reckoner at @1:23:00, wouldn't he of killed Jeremy?
he had trample so it would only do 3 back.
Cody Skater makes sense thank you!

How is it almost 2 hours when leovold is on the table?
2 things: 1 is that the planeswalker Kaya is her OR one creature not both... So Justin can't pick Kaya and The Eldrazi
2, he should -1 Kaya to deal one to Jeremy down from 4 to 2, then use his Comeuperance to act as a fog to then next turn finish Jeremy off with -1 Kaya deal 2 to 0...
as stated in a thread above if he did it that way he still would of lost unless jeremy miss played. cause jeremy attacks for lethal gets fogged then emblems and fetches life game and kills him next turn or soon after.
clearly the cycle must be broken. every player shall run a mono red deck.
HEY! YOU SAID THE 8 PEOPLE WHO DRAFTED THE FIRST SET WOULD COME BACK TOGETHER TO DRAFT!!! I DEMAND A DAVID MCDARBY INCLUDED 8 MAN DRAFT!! ;D
Shhh, just watch this video and be happy
SCG Conspiracy 2 Draft confirmed!!!
I agree with mat hugenberg
What happened to the audio quality? edit: nvm it was just the start
well........... Looks like I need to build a selvala commander deck now. :)
what are the sleeves on johns deck
Looks like Snapcaster Mage but a crab. They usually re-do popular cards with other creatures since Magic owns the rights to the original artwork.
Snipcaster Mage. You can buy them from Star City Games; one of the many things that this series does for them is show off some of their products like this.
I've never bought them so I can't speak to their quality, but they're priced competitively against the hypermats that I use.

Does Jeremy still get Leovold commander damage? i always thought the commanders owner had to hit with it.
Woooooo!
I was getting commander withdrawals already -.-
I know this comment might not get read, but if you are the monarch you draw a card regardless since it's not a may ability. So you can't say "I won't draw a card but you will lose 1 life and you all will lose 1 life" since the creature doesn't say "Instead of drawing a card if you are the monarch, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life". You get both effects.
He didn't draw because Leovold prevents him from drawing more than one card per turn.
Is the audio odd to anyone else? Tinny almost?
BAH GAWD KING, THAT QUEEN HAD A FAMILY
little did they know how broken Leovold turned out to be :)
Actually, the plane where Conspiracy takes place is called Fiore...
Fiora. Not that it really matters much in this case.
im glad suarez is back, he plays the best decks!
Jeremy's deck is so sick
Want to see fast combo decks.
why did stephen not give 2+2 to the unblocked token with jitte?
The unblocked creature that was not an eligible target for Jitte? Because it wasn't eligible.
oh yeah its equiped target... yup sorry misread jitte
