Tales of Symphonia, an action RPG and one of the most critically-acclaimed titles in the series.
The story takes place in Sylvarant, a world in danger of extinction due to the exploitation of mana by an evil group thought to be sealed away by the hero Mithos 4,000 years ago.

Best response to Zelos' death
I always liked Kratos more, but most runs I would never bring myself to kill Zelos. I'd rather have Zelos be redeemed and live a happy life rather than die a traitor. Kratos ends up hanging out with Dirk if Zelos lives, so I'm fine with that.

You can actually fight Seles his Sister twice in the arena, if you go before his betrayal and after it.
Her dialogue changes if you go after his death if you beat her before.

Kratos & Zelos are essentially the same character. The game is better with Zelos because thats the actual canon. They mapped the story out to where you do more side quest if you kept Zelos.
I like having Kratos back, but it's not worth Zelos dying.
Neither is a bad choice, but its one or the other which makes me sad that I can't have both

Well if you pick Zelos more people would be alive. Even if you pick Kratos he goes away when the game ends regardless.

Tl;Dr reason would be keep whoever your favorite is. I'd recommend you keep Zelos if it's your first playthrough he's got some side quests that require him to be in your party while Kratos doesn't. Gameplay wise they aren't really different besides some minor stuff.
kratos does have sidequest
I think most players will end up with Zelos on a first playthru. Kratos feels more like an optional bonus. The game is clearly built with Zelos in mind. I like that the option for Kratos exists, but I usually don't go out of my way for him
I actually did Kratos on my very first playthrough not knowing what would happen to Zelos ☠️
Same experience with me. I was too obsessed with Lloyd x Colette that I never hesitated an opportunity to select those two together. So I never quite unlocked any other side narratives or easter eggs on my first playthrough. It was straightforward start to finish 40 hours.
And yet he is alive in the sequel

I do love the fact that the game gives you a magic knight character who tragically betrays you in the first act of the story; only for him to be replaced with another magic knight who tragically betrays you. Its extremely ironic.
That’s interesting I’ve never heard of that before. It’s interesting even though the Zelos betrayal isn’t really canon considering he’s alive and friends with everyone in the sequel game.

Fun fact: the script writers for Symphonia have confirmed that this is and always was intended to be the canonical way that the story plays out and that they wanted Zelos to only be kept alive should the player chooses to come out with him in Flanoir.
That’s why a lot of Zelos’s backstory is in side quests. He was never really intended to be an official addition to the party. His role really is just an after thought.
That definitely makes sense. I remember hearing about some story elements about his mother and sister and thinking "I don't remember that in the main storyline", and sure enough it's all side content

Contextually speaking, I’ve always thought the story makes far more sense for Zelos to betray the party and for Kratos to be the one to save the party from Cruxis’s traps.

I'll have to check that out, that's definitely interesting. Yeah, I always thought it was weird that Kratos after all that they'd been through together is just like "nah I'm gonna hang out with Dirk, you kids have fun fighting the final boss"
@@WesDoesGamesalso the costumes and moves that he can get but you never have enough time with him to get them. But I like Zelos and idk why they both couldn’t just join the party.
Also side story is still story. Just added in but still canonical. It’s more character development.
Makes senses since with Zelos' event in Flanoir, he mention a one liner about how unlike him to make his choice.
There's a little reference of this in Tales of the Abyss. A replica in the late game says "Zelos died"

I go Zelos, but it’s nice to see you get to play as both Zelos and Kratos at the same time in the last Human Ranch invasion. I do think Zelos is more of an Echo Playable Character of Kratos since both Zelos and Kratos, but Zelos is more of the Chosen version of Kratos.
In terms of gameplay, Zelos is significantly better than Kratos because of his high attack speed. Especially if you get the ex gem skill 'Slasher' which allows you to attack 6 consecutive times in one combo without special moves, enabling rapid replenishment of mp and making him a capable spam-heavy dps
I really like the parte when You go to iselia ranch and Kratos join your party. It's interesting having zelos and Kratos y a fight at the same time, besides it lasts to short

Well Kratos is able to cast judgment which is cool as hell in the GameCube version but doesn't have as many outfits as Zelos.
Can't remember if Zelos does learn it as well thou.
So both deserve a second playthrough period.

Zelos doesn't learn Judgment on the gamecube version but does in every ported game that came afterwards.
Zelos can learn Judgment in the GC version if you use a GameShark code. He learns it without cheats in all other versions of Symphonia, though!
For the "happiest" outcome, you would have to fight Kratos, and Zelos remains in your party. That way, both characters remain alive.
However, as for who is the better party member? Kratos.
I usually get Kratos in my first playthrough, get all of his stuff, and then get Zelos in the next playthrough. I coin flip after that.
I have done both. The story works better in my opinion if Zelos helps get the Angelic Cruxis Crystal. TOS is the bees knees!
I chose Kratos and will usually always choose Kratos. However, that was back in the gamecube days and my love for this game only grew. Zelos is overall an amazing character. I iwhs i could have them both. Right now, im doing a run with Kratos as the highest but i am preparing for the next run to be pure Zelos. There seems to be some hidden dialogue i want to get with Zelos but it takes quite a bit of affection points.
Gameplay wise I can't help prefer Kratos but story wise it feels so wrong to do this to Zelos.

Zelos doesn't betray for real anyway, he does a "sui by cops" movement and that's absolutely awful.
I have yet to get Kratos on any version other than gamecube since he's guaranteed if you deny the first 2 members. I couldn't bring myself to say bad things to the characters.

Getting Kratos back is not the canon storyline but an easter egg thrown into the game. Zelos to the end is canon. In fact, Lloyd's highest relationship is with Colette, his presumed girlfriend, and the most straightforward storyline the plot goes through. Though, you also have the option of speaking with Zelos at Flanoir IF you build high enough affection with him by then. But that is a hard achieve given the game's default algorithm giving Colette the highest affection preference and sticking Zelos effectively to the bottom.

I wish we could keep both.
The first time I played ToS I remember thinking that Zelos was super annoying. However after playing it multiple times he became a better character over time.
That said, Kratos is the pick lol
I felt exactly the same way. Zelos has depth, but Kratos is likeable from the start
I feel like the game is set up that way to make most players feel like that. You get Kratos at the very start so obviously you'll be invested in him and he's presented as this older, badass cool guy that's integral to the plot. Zelos appears midgame as some random rich, shallow womanizing pervert. His development isn't as crucial to the plot and is only rewarded if you go out of the way for him. Gaining his trust and true redemption is satisfying. Unfortunately, his more likeable personality traits are shown more in the mediocre sequel rather than the first.
@@Anthony-fu6cl I agree. They did a really good job with how they set it up IMO too. You think there is nothing else to Zelos and that he's basically a shallow character without much going on, but they allow you to delve deeper into it, that's good character progression.

could you provide more details into how to get kratos in the endgame ? apparently you gotta raise your relationship with kratos through some steps and conversation choices, can you help us with that?
Basically prioritize conversations with him over everyone else. That may include lowering your standing with everyone else so Kratos will have a higher "relationship" value

At least the game has new game plus, unlike earlier Star Ocean games. The remake of Star Ocean Second Story, has reached the level of a tales of game with the added new game plus.
So they make you choose between one spell/sword vs the other and I like Zelos way too much. Kratos in Vesperia was a nice touch. (Not playable just to fight him)

Easily Kratos. Zelos is 22 and collete is 16. When first entering the meltokio sewer Zelos says to collete: “hmm. If you’d like me to show you. I’ll be happy to educate you tonight”. when collete asks him why he doesn’t go home until late night.
It's debatable how serious that was, tho, since Zelos's lecherous personality is more like a mask he wears. I consider it more of an off-color joke
I like the Kratos one. Fighting Zelos was ok but its not even canon.
How do I get high enough affection for kratos?
I think Gamecube version had an easier way to choose between them before the updated PS2 version (which is the version for all future ports)
Also chose Zelos the first time and only chose Kratos on one playthrough to see what happens.

Yeah in the GameCube version you just have to reject all three people in your top affections at Flanoir and Kratos will always appear no matter what his affection is.

Kratos originally, and then when replaying Zelos. Zelos had alot more personality under the surface and I wanted to see his story through
Kratos ending is better even though zelous survival is cannon for the sequel the sequel sucked out loud ahould have just been a whole new story.
I've flirted with playing the sequel but I've heard its not worth it even for diehard fans...
@@WesDoesGamesOnly play Dawn of the New World if you can enable cheat codes. Otherwise, the original Symphonia cast can't gain any levels. It's really bad.
@@WesDoesGames As a side story for world building purposes dawn of the new world is alright. But it's definitely not the continuation of Lloyd and the group that people expected of a sequel. The monster catching mechanic is extremely fun tho
I'll always choose Zelos, since it's canon, & we get many more sidequests if we have Zelos, also it feels better that every playable characters are alive. The only major downside of having Zelos over Kratos is that Zelos (as party member) don't have Judgement spell, which you can unlock using cheat code/mod
I feel the same way, I can't deal with the guilt of killing a character, even if they're fictional lol
