Fun fact: Toothless hesitating before he nuzzles into Hiccup's hand for the first time was actually an accident! The animating program the animators used glitched a bit, but when they realized how much depth it added to Toothless' character, they left it in :) Also, I think Toothless waiting a bit to reveal that Hiccup was alive was him being protective over Hiccup. He wanted to hear Stoick apologize and truly mean it so that he'd know never to take his son for granted again. Their bond is just incredible.

More fun fact, the scene where hiccup finds toothless in the woods, his eye being closed and then open after the wing passes over it is also an animation glitch, but they decided to keep it because they liked the creep factor

I think it helped add emotion to Toothless as a character. Put yourself in his shoes for a moment. You're handicapped, trapped, possibly hungry and definately scared. A human, who's kind has hunted and killed other dragons aproaches you with food, and shows empathy to you. He shows you his world (Hiccup drawing Toothless in the dirt) so you show him yours (Drawing a bunch of lines on the ground and turning it into a game of "Dont step on the cracks")
Heck even before that, animals share their food with others whom they trust, when Toothless regurgitated half of the fish for Hiccup, Toothless was showing that he trusts Hiccup enough since he discarded his pocket knife.
And their friendship blossoms from there. From the moment Hiccup frees Toothless from the trap, right until Toothless turns around to dive back into the flames to rescue Hiccup.
You can start to understand why this film was nominated for an academy award.

@@larniieplayz6285 Yeah? Idk that's just the vibe I got, why else hesitate before revealing him? It seemed like there was a moment of reconciliation between Toothless and Stoick, you could just feel the tension between the two at the moment. Stoick, initially hating this beast, learns to care for him because his son cares for him. Then, all the sudden, his son is gone, and all that's left is the beast Stoick once despised. Instead of reacting with anger, he reacts with remorse, which Toothless seems to want out of him before revealing the fact that Hiccup is alive. I think part of it was Toothless's honest curiosity to how Stoick would react, because I, as well, remember being scared and unsure in the moment that Stoick would hurt or blame Toothless when watching the scene, and I think Toothless was wondering that as well and was putting him to the test

I do appreciate how even though Stoic does the cliche "you're not my son" line, you see him visibly recoil when he leave Hiccup, as the weight of what he did hits him. He's not perfect, but he's not just a 2D token "No" Dad character.

HTTYD is meant for minors but has some jokes and deep meanings in the movies, also even the series, where they have different seasons.
Riders of Berk, defenders of Berk (the young crew) and Race to the edge.
      (RTTE) (adult crew, they're 19)
4 example in the series, Snoutlout, the Buffed black haired guy with sheep horns, suffers from home abuse, by his dad's part, seen in subtle ways in the sere a few times. Made for adults and teens to catch it up but not young ones.
Where... Y'know makes hittings, disowning, psychologycal abuse indirects.
Also deugg addiction from his dad's part, since he is a drunk violent man.
And ofc they're vikings,so they're "violent",but y'know ab what kind of violence I'm talking ab.
Ofc they won't show it explicitly to not trigger anyone. But yes indirectly or violent moves/yellings from his dad's part and Making the minor step back, stutter, tremble or whatever. Also his big respect and how he sometimes even doesn't looks his dad to his face in some occasions.
And how he reacts with his dad(as a puppy) and how he behaves with his friends.(confident annoying macho guy) How he radically changes or even being safe with his friends he has still emotional scars even in 3rd movie, where he's supposed to be 21,and not 15.
How he doesn't fking know how to react if someone gives love, care and attention if it's truly meant.
And he just stands in there, as an
"omkeh, now what am i supposed to do, this is not in the plan, how this thing works?"
And it's sad to see a minor(then in RTTE he's 19,but still the same Sweet side)
How he has impotence when losing, bullying Hiccup bc of it,or how he feels bad when ppl he likes just tell him to stfu
(Astrid, Ruffnut, etc)and he in the end feels bad if they tell him constantly he is dumb and hit him after or whatever.
Also when hiccup said to him he was so idiotic and useless, and couldn't ever do a plan by himself and rule the group, and think ab anything...
      He felt so bad.
Since it's also shown that his abusive dad, in subtle ways, he also questions his intelligence or capacities, and forcing him to be the #1, with disowning, yellings or psychologycal punishments etc if he fails. And he even stated once that he would go further than that if his son was as Hiccup or dared to be weak.
That makes Snoutlout have a lot of mental issues if psychologists existed in that time.
When Hiccup told all that mean things to Snoutlout,
Hiccup crossed the line that time. Because made Snoutlout feel actually bad with himself
While Snoutlout usually didn't care ab what Hiccup said to him ever.
Bit that time, Hiccup saying how bad he was, prob made him remember ab his dad,so flasbacks came,so...yeah, F,i guess...
I disliked Hiccup in that chapter from riders of Berk.
Bc it's obviously an abused person's signs.
I mean. That's not a young kids' topics...

11:21 this scene starts off with hiccups and tootheless’ themes playing individually, then as they fall they both play at the same time chaotically, once hiccup ditches that paper and they sync up just like their themes end up doing that’s why it feels so magical

    • @turricanedtc3764
      @turricanedtc3764 3 роки тому +10

As you say, it's using the score (which is amazing anyway) to reinforce the storytelling (which is pretty much genius). During "Forbidden Friendship", Toothless and Hiccup's themes (or leitmotifs) are sort-of dancing around each other while they size each other up, and during the training montage scenes, the leitmotifs start to mesh around the edges. "Test Drive" is where it all culminates - switching back and forth between Toothless and Hiccup's leitmotifs as each takes control, falling into dissonant and chromatic runs as they're falling, then when they rejoin and Hiccup throws away his "cheat sheet", both of their themes are in sync and equally audible. John Powell was robbed of that Oscar.

Have you notice how excited stoick was when he said "with you doing so well in the arena,we finally have something to talk about"
I don't think it was him loving hiccup all of a sudden because ability
I think he just figured that hiccup would be doing so good if he didn't like fighting dragons, and he finally has something in common with his dad he can talk about
Before, they couldn't be more different, and finding a topic to talk about with someone so different takes a lot of time. Time which stoick,as a chief, doesn't have
He was so genuinely excited to have a real in depth conversation with his son.

I love how much they paid attention to the viking culture in this movie as well. The book of dragons with nordic runes and Stoic saying "Odin Help Us." Odin was the Chieftain King of the Gods in Norse mythology. Very similar position Zeus had in Greek mythology. The marvel Thor movies along with this series got me more into studying this culture then a few years later only to discover I have viking ancestry on my dad's side. I ride horses and my friends call me the "Hiccup" of their group lol. and I also love tinkering and building things as well like Hiccup did. Although I would love to learn to be a blacksmith. So glad you loved this movie! You should check out the animated series that follows the events between this and second movie. Highly enjoyable!

14:23 CinemaTherapy's channel does a fantastic job of explaining how Stoick's reaction to basically disowning and shunning Hiccup after yelling at him in this scene (the fact that he looked deeply pained and took that step backwards and his breath hitched) is the ONLY reason the audience doesn't hate him forever.
We know he's not evil, he's just a misguided, broken father who's doing his best to lead his people and be a single parent at the same time, the only way he knows how.
The animators did a great job of putting that level of emotion in Stoick because if they hadn't, the audience would never have given him a chance to redeem himself.
They also explain that Hiccup looks nothing like his father AT ALL, except for their eyes. Hiccup has his mother's face and a similar body frame to hers (slender and lanky) but Hiccup's eyes are the same as his father's.

I remember seeing it at the theater after it first came out and first thing I thought in seeing Toothless, was how he looked like my make Black cat, Tabou. ☺ I found out when they designed him they wanted him to look cat like but with dog tendencies. Which was great. I'm glad you loved it so much and like that it had 2 Scottish actors playing main roles. (I've been a long time fan of Gerry/ Gerard Butler's for like 20 yrs.) I found it funny they had ppl with all sorts of accents and non accents to of all things...play Vikings lol. Not sure my Norwegian/Swedish forefathers would like it,lol.😝😄 Guess they won't ever know lol. Btw...love hearing your accent and you're adorable. 😊 Looking fwd to checking out more of your film reactions.
