    As for a TV under 55” that will last for 15 years that performs well. Go with an OLED. I have an LG B6 from 2014. It has over 36,600+ hours of use. I’m retired and that TV goes on in the morning with my first cup of coffee and doesn’t go off till I go to bed, unless I go out which isn’t often as I’m physically a mess. It looks just as good as the day I bought it. Now I don’t know how many hours you watch per day but I’m guessing you don’t come anywhere close to my usage case. That 36,600 + adds up to slightly of 12 years of 8 hours per day of use. Just my two cents worth of info. Good luck in your endeavor.

      I went to Best Buy and was able to compare the Sony A80L side by side with X93L (about the same price) and thought A80L OLED was easily better. And the "viewing angle" was FAR better. They also have just about every SONY available so look at the others if you have more money to spend. Good luck!

    Thank you for shedding light on the degraded signal received from traditional cable. 2 days prior to this video I had a huge aha moment when I noticed the difference in picture quality from watching an episode of the Golden Bachelor (don't judge) recorded on my xfinity DVR and streaming it from Hulu. It was a dramatic difference, far sharper streamed from Hulu. It made so much sense.

For example, compare a fast motion sequence with no compression and the same sequence with the compression normally used in broadcast. Thank you for the amazing content you guys in DT provide.

      I’m struggling to find a way to reproduce this, since the video you would watch would itself be heavily compressed. I tend to think it would have to be a simulation, one which would be impervious to the compression applied by UA-cam, even for UA-cam premium subscribers.

    • @dantasticmania8728
      @dantasticmania8728 10 місяців тому +3

      I think as time goes on resolution as whole over fps won't matter. Most people on average can't really tell the difference between 1400p vs native 4k. Upscaling on top of AI in the not too distant future will definitely fix that. I'm personally am more blown away by DLSS more than anything else. This might even be a massively huge game changer for even Nintendo's next version of the Switch which strongly more than rumored to be using a custom Nvidia chip which could support DLSS. Which is exclusive to Nvidia it's self.

    For those of you suffering from poor sports image, sometimes something as simple as an old school antenna can help you get the best picture. Broadcast TV is the source with the least compression and no cable or internet middleman manipulating and compressing the signal even more. If it's possible, put that digital tuner to good use and get yourself a good uhf antenna. There are way more channels than there used to be for free. A good antenna could cost you less than a month of cable.

      Even using an OTA antenna, the sports seem compressed. It may improve greatly with nextGen TV but there is only ATSC 1.0 available in my area.
      I still recommend getting an antenna. I spent about $100 on mine from a recommendation from the Antenna Guy. I just think my local stations in the Augusta GA area are not the best quality signal, particularly my NBC and CBS. There is a lot of blocky artifacts watching football. I will say they were at least 20% worse when I was streaming, though.

    Re TV calibration, having worked all my life as a A/V tech i have seen some realy bad samples
    of how the factory settings do the TV's no favours.
    You get what you pay for most of the time, my advice is that if like me you are a perfectionist
    stick with Sony, as Caleb has said, they get the settings as close as you can expect leaving you
    the choice of tweaking them or paying for a full calibration.
    Be careful who you choose to do a calibration, i have seen some sets that have looked way off
    after an inexperienced calibrator has made a mess of the settings.

    • @Barbarapape
      @Barbarapape 10 місяців тому

      You are correct, anyone can buy the equipment required and with no training or experience
      call themselves a "Calibrator" and charge for making your TV worse.
      This is why i advise people to buy a Sony that i have enough experience of to be sure that it
      will be good enough without wasting money on calibration.@@steveludwig4200

    • @Caleb_Denison

      This is why I have suggested multiple times to START with a calibrator who is ISF certified. That is not a guarantee of excellent work, but it is a good starting point. And from there, customer reviews, and other endorsements are a good way to feel confident in a calibrator’s expertise.

    @dgillies5420 10 місяців тому +3

    Another problem with sports is that you need variable-rate compression. I say this as a person who took out a US patent on the DASH streaming protocol for just improving sports playback bitrates. I was watching cycling event in 2011, and it was switching between the in-studio commentator and the cyclists pedaling their bikes. In-studio the announcer was crystal clear - too clear, actually. On the bike, the spinning chainwheel was a blocky mess. They actually needed to reduce the compression of in-studio video and save the extra bandwidth to do less compression on the bike shots. Most TV systems today probably can't do this in real-time for a live broadcast, but for a pre-recorded event a good video mastering engineer can do it with a few hours of patience to perfect the compressed video.

    Hi caleb, 2 questions:
    1. Why did you put an emoji over one of the sony TV's referenced during the discussion on calibration? Was it an older model?
    2. Is there a timefraime that calibration is mist impactful? I.e. should you calibrate a TV straight away or can you still calibrate after a year or two of general use?

    His 15 year old toshiba is going to look better with 1080p content then any tv out right now from this year or the past 7 years. The biggest complaints ive seen in our group os when people from a really old set would come up and grt really mad when watching 720p or 1080p content going wait why does it look worse. I then have to explain how upscaling works and that no matter how good a tv is at upscaling it will never look like a native 1080p tv in 1080p. People just dont get that then i tell them test out 4k and enjoy that because you will notice the difference then.
    This message is for anybody upgrading from a native 720 or native 1080p panel. Just dont expect even the new tvs to look as good in some content as those do. People dont realize this and its hard for some to udnerstand. But if you play hdr 4k content or dolby vision depending on the set you will be in heaven so enjoy!

    9:45 Reliability is a concern for me too.
    Especially, after my Philips 55" TV (with full-array local dimming) died on me after just 7 years.
    The lesson I learned the hard way is to check the operation range for both temperature and humidity.
    If that range is too short, simply ignore that TV.
    Moreover, avoid low-end / budget offerings, as they had to cut many corners in order to get to that price.
    Additionally, I tend to prefer LG's software, as it is lighter on the hardware.
    I would prefer a "dumb" TV, but it seems that there is no such thing these days.
    Hence, I chose a TV with (a) the most years of software updates, and (b) the lightest software.
    Even if I lose compatibility with the common applications, the TV will still be a good panel to show my set-top-box - which is the most important role of a TV: to make video look good.

    Sony is TERRIBLE for "Build Quality." I had multiple Sony products - including TV sets and an ES A/V Receiver that did NOT lost a long time. The one 70" TV set only lasted less than four years. That was a shame, because that was a 3D TV set. I bought all those 3D movies and can no longer watch them, because 3D TV sets aren't made anymore. The A/V Receiver was an expensive Sony ES A/V Receiver. It had a 5-Year Warranty. Shortly after five years, the A/V Receiver stopped working. I took it to a Licensed Repair place and was told the motherboard had overheated and there was nothing that could be done for a repair. Even thought it was literally a matter of days past the "Five-Year" time period, Sony continued to tell me, "Sorry, it is passed the five-year warranty time period." All that money out the window. I will never buy another Sony product again. And I actually encourage people NOT to spend a lot of money on electronics, because as Caleb said, "These products are NOT built the way they were in the past." In the past. I still have a VCR from 1992 and a DVD player from 2000 that I purchased that still work. Electronics today are pathetic and don't last that long, so I don't mind buying the cheaper stuff now.

What do you think is the reason for the lack of this type of content, is it because it doesn’t match the UA-cam algorithm or is it because big television channels such as yours, stop the fomo, be the installer etc. doesn’t review these TVs (( which would affect the algorithm))

    The picture quality is excellent except for some occasional blooming when displaying a logo on black screen. During any movie it’s hardly noticeable because the whole screen is filled with content.
    My question is should I upgrade to X95L now that it’s mini led and has much less blooming? I assume the picture quality is same or close to same. The only difference is mini led vs fald. Am I missing much?

    • @bartus88
      @bartus88 10 місяців тому +1

      PQ might be close to the same in SDR, but in HDR the X95L would probably look much better. Apparently the 90L and 95L are also better in upscaling than previous years, so if you watch a lot of non-4k content even SDR will look better. So the difference in PQ is very dependent on what you watch. However whether you should upgrade is ultimately down to if you're still happy with your current TV. Just because there's something better doesn't mean you should get it if you're perfectly content as is.

    • @paulcox2447

      If you wanted a mini LED you could have bought it from any other manufacturers last year before overpaying for a "top-of-the-line fald"
      Thing is though you've already made that investment and you're enjoying the TV so why not just continue to enjoy it?
      Don't get stuck on the upgrade every year thing and by the next time you buy a TV you'll be able to get one of the Sony OLEDs 😉
      I just can't see spending thousands of dollars several years in a row to continue to get an overpriced, but good tv.
      Between the two TVs you could have had an a95L. Despite what the influencers like to say Sony does not give a fuck about their LCD TV's
      For them it's all about making a profit when it comes to them, they throw the Sony tax on top and then try to make the product as cheap as possible that's exactly why your top of the line Sony from one year ago is a full array local dimming

If you're contented with your X95J, squeez the value out of it as much as you can for next couple of years, you'll have more options to choose from in the later years. Just avoid the discussions on new features, better upscaling, better processing and so on for sometime as that'd prevent you from enjoying your current TV. These reviewers (salesmen in disguise) will keep bugging you by inducing and influencing you to believe the FOMO. I'm tired of 'This is the best TV...' superlative every year they ignorantly utter and make you to hate your current TV even if it's an outstanding one. Stay away from reviews, particularly comparisons, instead watch your favourite contents, you'll be fine with your TV.

      The subpixel structure on qd OLED is arranged differently in a triangle formation. Who can cause some color fringing which can be a negative if you notice it. Otherwise yeah 4k is generally always 4k

    In the 40" space if your budget stretches to $1500, it's actually better to go with a BFG display which will last WAY longer. It's a monitor, not a TV, so it will need to be hooked up to a source, but it will have much better performance and likely last longer as well (not to mention it will probably have a better warranty too).

    Best budget 55" under $600 in my book is the TCL Q7, it's as close as you're going to get to a QM8 at this price point. Blacks are very Black, even with all the lights off in my room... How black you say? On low power mode the TV emits no back light whatsoever. Making night time viewing in a dark room easy on the eyes, or if you just want to run ambient audio or video while sleeping. The Q7 55" is the perfect bedroom TV.

      If the LCD TV has a very strong contrast and displays black, then it certainly loses the same details. There is no way LCD TV can display both and it is necessary to make a compromise, so everyone knows what they would prefer. it's not a problem for me at all that the TV majčken blomming prefers this to the fact that I don't have good displayed details and I also hate the contrast picture because it's not SOFT but sharp and deep.

      @@birdtj82 I'm talking about TCL Q7 or Hisense U7K and I don't mean OLED. I know for myself that I don't need any OLED TV, and Sony Led TV is still somehow the best of all the others because it doesn't darken the picture like the others and the fact that it has a little bit of blomming is perfectly fine for me and in certain cases I would even use it wanted to have. I don't like any of these contrasting, sharp and deep pictures at all, because to me this is not a natural display of the picture at all. What is even more important is that the high brightness of the panel is not important to me at all, because I do not watch anything from HDR, Dolby Vision, 4K, and the programs I watch only have HD resolution, and even that is bad. for me, a TV like the Sony X95J or this year's X90L is the top of my head. For me, UPSCALING is the most important thing with TV, and if the TV has some blomming, I still prefer that to scenes that are too dark, too many black scenes, which is what most everyone wants. The TV must be such that, if there is a dark scene, I can raise the light or something, so that the black starts to become grayish like with an IPS panel, that's what I want. that's why I don't like OLED TV at all because I don't like that kind of picture, and it's the same crap with phones. I want the same picture on the TV as when you look out into nature and see the same thing on the TV, and this OLED and all such contrast TVs no longer display, but only improve the picture, so that it is as eye-catching, deep, sharp as possible. For me, something like this is only suitable for photo studios and anyone who is involved in the development and processing of photo images. At the moment, one of the best TVs for me would be this year's Sony miniLed X95L, it's a bomb of a TV, but first of all, I almost can't afford it, and secondly, I don't need it for the time being, because I hardly watch any TV because the kids have it for themselves.

Forget, rather avoid the reviewers and their reviews whatever good or bad they have to say about your selection. You'll be good with your choice. I bought Samsung The Frame 2023 model which many reviewers said bad things about it like it's crappy picture. Believe me, I own it and the picture is no short of outstanding with its 0 reflective matt screen. Believe in your own eye & judgement than depend on some else's.

    I agree with the earlier answers but the last two were egregious.
    1) Streaming can be excellent even beating OTA broadcasts. Examples would be TNF on Amazon Prime and MLB on Apple TV plus. I haven't had cable and satellite for years so I can't comment if they gotten worse. And just avoid UA-cam TV if you care about compression.
    2) You know what they'll be saying 15 years from now? They don't make them like they used to. What a BS fallacy.
    Unless you want to avoid OLED the LG 48C3 OLED is the no brainer answer.
    As for panel longevity the latest results from rtings show that LCD panels are having their own issues. And Sony sure in the heck isn't acquitting itself well in these tests. And anecdotally Sony is having quality issues based upon Amazon reviews and feed back from users on AVS. It's just bush league for Caleb to infer LG has more quality issues than Sony.

On the fire devices or the TV or both. I'm guessing that the upscaling to 4k is done on the fire devices then the TV does its best to smooth out the action? Any thoughts?

    The next generation of TV will use AI to take over almost everything in settings, modes, and memories. It will sort your profiles based on your daily use or find the best settings for each content that it shows on your TV in a matter of milliseconds. IMO, this kind of TV will last for a long time because the AI will keep learning and improving every day.
    The AI will be a key factor in the longevity of these TVs. As the AI learns more about your preferences and the content that you watch, it will be able to provide you with an even better viewing experience. This will make you less likely to want to upgrade to a new TV in the future....
    Btw, great Ep. as usual. 👍

    Ben's Question - TV that'd last for long ( assuming at least a decade), must be below 55 inch and with good upscaling? ok, here's my take on it. From the requirement, we first need to understand or decipher the context of this use case, right? It seems, you're an old school Ben (like me), like to watch the SDR contents and old blu ray movies or DVDs or via streaming, don't care much for the new bells and whistles like higher nits, hdr10, dolby vision, black level, dimming zones, all 4 x 2.1 ports etc as you've apparently put up with an LCD panel for 15 years, so I take it, you don't care much for the new panel technology advancement, but more concerned with better upscaling and durability and something that's portable as well. I think I got your requirement in the right context. And thats more important than pretending to be smart to kind of rush through your query literally to address it just like a genAI chatBot would probably do, lol. Here's my recommendation, since your budget amount indicates you are good to spend that kind of money provided you got the same or similar quality as your old TV that would faithfully serve you for next 10 to 15 years, right? I think Sony brand is well known for better upscaling, picture sharpness and durability ( based on my own experience as well) and you can get Sony X80L 43 inches or 50 inches at less than half the amount of your budget's upper limit. Hope this helps. look for at least 5 year warranty and you may top-up your warranty for additional years with the surplus amount of your budget you'd be left with.

    I want to believe the calibration part, but computer monitors can almost be calibrated automated with a $100 colorimeter that sets up a profile for the operating system to use. You just dangle the device in the middle of the screen and press "Start." Sometimes it can be improved slightly by adjusting RGB sliders by hand as you go, but it gets the color errors and gamma curve correction better than most TVs come out of the factory, so they could have custom color profiles added too. ASUS's art monitors get custom calibration at the factory.
    At the very least, the option to use a SpyderExpress or similar device with a TV like you can with a computer monitor seems easy to implement in a "smart" TV that has a computer inside with 4 GB of RAM and some storage space.
    I wondered if there is disagreement about what correct color is among different companies. For instance, in the Rtings review of the Sony A95K they mention that Sony targets a cooler whitepoint than D65 standard (which is based on midday light in London under overcast skies? is perception of light regional?)

      Sony does indeed target cooler than D65, and as a matter of fact, this is something I point out in my A95L review, which is in edit and coming out very soon!

    If i have a samsung s90c tv and a samsung q990c soundbar. Should i connect a streaming device (apple tv 4k 128gb) to the tv or soundbar for best results? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
