It's probably that ESP32 system that's chewing up the power. Trying to find someone who's got power consumption numbers for the RAK solution (to which you can add interfaces, supposedly) vs the Raspberry Pico solution. Don't know where the Pico usage falls on the scale of consumption rates.

Hopefully an e-ink display and interchangeable antennas in the future! I'm excited at what they're coming up with for these devices, I _really_ want to see an old t-mobile sidekick like device with e-ink display that slides up to reveal a hardware keyboard underneath, or can be used with bluetooth from your phone like lilygo

Thank you for sharing this stuff. Saw a comment on the main meshtastic discord about a device like this with AlleyCat's case. With a 4200mah battery he said he was getting about 24 hours use out of it on a non-busy network with fastest screen timeout. Given its power consumption, kinda makes sense to make a deep case with a substantially larger battery and maybe a solar panel on the back. Flip it face down when not in use, let it grab some watts from the light.

You can buy 18650 with 4200mah right? I believe the even go higher than that although there are counterfeit batteries & I don't know where the real deal ends & the fakes lie into.
Someone should make a case for that.

@@ClickClack_Bam Eh, I'd be tempted to put a 10+ah lipo pack in, and, under something clear that can take a little abuse, a 6v solar panel on the back. Every mah counts.

I am getting 5 hrs with moderate use, with the 1100 mah battery. I have a second T-deck that will have a 3000 mah. If you get stuck on the pre programmed message response screen use the touch screen to navigate. The mouse get locked on the screen until you send a message. You can turn on and off the keyboard backlight by pressing Alt + B at the same time.

Nice video. Remember, you're going to want to leave some room for a lithium battery for heat, and just in case, for swelling. Otherwise, things could get very ugly, very quickly. Remember, this is something that fits in your hand.

This looks like a good meshtastic device to have a couple backups of because personally in the past during ice storms is when internet goes down and theres no way for anyone to download an app.
It’d be nice if there was a local web interface that mimics the android and/or iOS app.’s Then in theory multiple devices could send messages over a single LoRa device; with a caveat that all devices connected to a single lora device could only see and send a single message at a time from the same dashboard. But at least the lora mesh could be utilized at/on a whim without needing prier internet access.

I'm wondering if LiliGo T-deck could be used to create something like SpotX - basically to mount a sattelite antenna, and work on 240-270MHz satcom (ufo10, ufo2, ufo11) or even TinyGS LoRA sattelites on 70cm frequencies??? Could be the perfect very-long distance device for SHTF scenarios that even my Mom could use.

    • @RavenwoodAcres

I hadn't though of that. It is a very interesting idea that deserves some research.

    • @garenkarapetian709
      @garenkarapetian709 3 місяці тому

@@RavenwoodAcres Yeah. Basically, the Meshtastic tranceiver would need to be replaced with (or complemented by) something that would work on 240-270MHz and/or TinyGS frequencies - that's the difficult part. It would obviously need a satellite antenna (that's easy: Brazilians and Russian have perfected the art of compact homebrew satcom antennas).
And it would probably need a user-friendly WhatsApp/Telegram-like app written (provided that T-deck comes with some sort of OS preinstalled), which would assign a fixed 5 or 6-character username to itself and listen to the train of 187-character transmissions (like AIS does) and save the ones that start with it's own 6-char username, and display accordingly. Once received, it sends out a receipt ping. Once read by recepient, it sends out a read ping. No central server. No database (the local DB is inside the device itself). No authentication gateway or gatekeepers (those Iridium, Garmin or SpotX devices will not work during SHTF even if you have subscription because the authentication gateways are on the ground). Just a set of hard-coded rules: e.g. 140-char max, 10 messages/hour max; if not received after 5 minutes, try again - 5 times max; and what to do if the primary frequency is hijacked, jammed or overloaded.
      The structure of each 187-char message: @To, @From, message-ID, 140-char Content, Timestamp, Message-status.
According to my calculations, if 10,000 people were to transmit 187-character messages in 1 hour that's just 2.2MB/hr

Yes you can. The lora module uses SPI, so you should be able to take the 2 spi lines off that (MISO, SCK) and use one of the Grove tx/rx lines for the address line, to get a 3wire spi connection to say a 2.9" eink display.
The firmware then bneeds to support the display by changing the address line and recompiling

Their basic options (without LoRa) would be something like the T-Display S3 which is the ESP32-S3 a display, two buttons etc. they’re all pretty much the same. Just ESP32 micro controllers with added hardware.
