"Comparing The British Empire To Nazi Germany Is DISGRACEFUL!" | Historian Slams Teaching Guidance

  • School guidance organisation ‘The Key’ has told teachers to present the British Empire to secondary school kids like Nazi Germany.
The Key began as a government backed initiative, and now provides teaching resources to more than 100,000 school leaders.
Its “anti-racism curriculum review” has been slammed for 'polluting formative young minds'.
Historian Rafe Heydel-Mankoo blasts the decision, saying that it is "disgraceful" and "disrespectful" to people within the Empire who fought with Britain.

I get why citizens of former colonies might hate the British. What I will never understand is why so many choose to live here given that we are allegedly a despicable race. I would have thought this country would be the last choice. I also have experienced immigrants living here declaring that they dislike the British, why come here???

Opportunity. They know that there will be bigots and even outright hostility, but they are just like anyone else. They want nice things, a good job, and their children doing better than they did. Staying in Africa, Southern Asia, or the Caribbean doesn't give them the same opportunities to basically earn money and get ahead.

The citizens of the empire absolutely did NOT hate the British. Most were deeply proud to be British despite the majority never having set eyes on a native Briton. The empire meant education, travel, new businesses, new products, social progress, peace. It didn't have to be imposed they wanted it - much like the Roman empire but with far less warfare. This nonsense about an evil empire is propagated by nationalist groups seeking their political power and by post-Trotskyists who've lost touch with reality.

@@johnkeane1419 Would you like to tell that to my 96 year old grandfather who volunteered well after the point when that was not the cool thing to do because he thought the Nazis were evil and the world was better off without them?
Would you care to tell that to the 2.5 million citizens of the Raj who put on a uniform and provided history's largest volunteer only army to make the world safe for democracy and take their place within the nations of the world? Or the men who still volunteer for the Ghurkas, that they were wasting their time despite the fact that they are the population most likely to lose out from an Axis victory excluding the Jews? Or the men and women like Sir Ken Adam who fled their country and then joined our forces to save their own homeland from themselves?
The difference between now and then is that back them, most people had clear values and a sense of self, purpose and responsibility despite whatever circumstances they found themselves in in their daily lives, we clearly do not. Go to hell.

The British Empire was at times brutally racist, murderous and violent with the killing of those opposed to its rule being seen as morally justified, even a moral good. The resources being discussed make this point . . . however they go too far in suggesting teachers do not allow the subject to be presented even-handedly, no good points should be allowed to ballance out the bad. The Empire was, like Starlin, Hitler, Mao, the Belgiums and Portuges, all bad, with no redeming features at all. This feels to me like political manipulation and also not supportable historically.
