    Great video as usual Blake. Does the focus peaking in filmic pro work the same with a DOF Adapter?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  3 роки тому +3

      Yes it does and you HAVE to use it (I leave it on all the time actually with it) otherwise you can easily miss focus as the depth-of-field is razor thin and of course the iPhone screen is small so a bit hard to judge accuracy anyway - but with peaking it works pretty well.

    Hi, thank you for your video. I’m from India .I want to make a mainstream movie using an iPhone with a Beastgrip DOF adapter and CP3 lenses. I’m in a bit of a dilemma: whether to go with the Mini Focus 40 or 60.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  4 місяці тому

      I used this Mini 40 with Meike cine primes and had no problems. They aren’t quite as big of a diameter as the CPs though (80mm vs. 110mm). So for those you might want the larger rig, but the 40 is very solid.

    Is there such a thing but for zoom photo lenses? Or could you use one of these on the left for manual focusing and another on the right side for zooming?

    • @iphoneographers

      Sure, this can be used for zoom or focus… Depending on the lens.

      You could swap them out but the included one is fairly long as I actually trimmed it down to fit. They’re not expensive though so you could get several for each lens.

      @@iphoneographers ummm we are talking about different things. I was referring to the gear. The Mini Follow comes with a 43t gear. They offer replacements in 38T and 65T. You are talking about the follow focus gear that goes around the lens, which is different from my query.

    Please could you explain: Is there need to Manual Focus Follow when Filmic has Focus peaking?
    I can not understand the difference.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  Рік тому

      Focus peaking just helps you tell what’s in focus, it doesn’t control the focus. So you use it when you are manually focusing. If you’re using a DOF, I highly recommend the follow-focus, or you can just focus with the lens itself. Depends on how complex of a setup you have. Or, if you’re just using the phone or simple external lenses like from Moment, you can manual focus using the screen controls. One word of warning is the peaking is not 100% accurate, it will be green even when stuff is slightly out of focus because it’s contrast based, so you just need to really double or even triple check if you’re shooting something critical.

    • @SuziAndOzi
      @SuziAndOzi Рік тому

      Sorry, seems i did not explain myself in right way )
      The situation is that I bought DOF adapter mk2. But not lens yet. With moment lenses like 58mm telephoto i use Filmic pro focus pulling from the screen. Even i can add speed to focus changing. So, I wondered will this work the same with DOF adapter. Or I need to buy smallrig follow focus for future lens?
      By the way, when i pull focus in filmic pro from screen it is likely zooming little bit. Is this normal? And is this the same when i will use smallrig follow focus with new big lens?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  Рік тому +1

      Oh, OK. No, it’s different. You actually set and lock the focus on your screen (depending on the shot), then you adjust the focus again with the lens. So you can do that with just your hand and the focus ring, but often I find a follow focus is easier and better. So ultimately with the setup you’re focusing twice. Regarding zooming in, that would depend on what you’re focusing on. It’s almost like lens breathing it sounds like. That’s likely shot dependent depending on how close something is to the camera. it shouldn’t happen every time and it’s not actually zooming. It’s just getting focus on the object. or at least that’s what I’ve experienced, I’ve never had it zoom randomly.

    • @SuziAndOzi
      @SuziAndOzi Рік тому

      “But often i found follow focus easier..” do you mean smallrig? Or filmic pro follow focus?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  3 роки тому +1

      The rod can be attached on the side like I showed on the Blackmagic rig. It comes with a small mount with two screws. So it should work in theory and you can also get a longer rod if needed depending on the size of the lens.

    Focus by wire doesn't work like that.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  2 роки тому

      Focus by wire has no stops, thus using a follow focus with hard stops it will allow you to hit repeatable marks that you otherwise couldn’t.

    • @greensreviews3932
      @greensreviews3932 2 роки тому

      @@iphoneographers Focus by wire is not dependent on where the focus wheel stops, it completely depends on how fast or slow the lens is turned, stopping the focus ring at a certain point won't ensure you get the same focus everytime you stop at that point. Even focus by wire lenses that have a lenear focus mechanism are not very accurate for rack focusing.

    • @qiyuxuan9437
      @qiyuxuan9437 2 роки тому +1

      @@iphoneographers The sigma lens you showed in video is not focus by wire, those are still mechanical linked focus ring that can be turned even when AF motor is working, thats why you can still focus it without power from camera. (kinda like a clutch system)Many new mirrless lens are focus by wire tho, those works very differently, the focus ring will not work when camera is off, since the ring has no mechanical link, it only send a signal to tell the AF motor where to focus, you can even change the turn direction and response curve on some of those lenses, but they tend to have a delay when you turn it.

    No offense to anyone but rigging your iPhone like this is just stupidity and a waste of money in my opinion. The whole point of shooting on a phone and compromising on image quality is because of its portability and ease of use. If you gonna put this much on it then get a camera that will give 10 if not 100 times better image quality and more functionality.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  3 роки тому +1

      No offense taken. Thanks for sharing your opinion. But it’s called options. You already have a phone. Rig it out as you please. Today with 10-bit video and Filmic Pro LogV3 you can get amazing results that absolutely rival much more expensive cameras and it’s only getting better. No one is saying ditch your traditional cameras (although for some this works alone), but having this too is great.

    • @animaxxx4429
      @animaxxx4429 3 роки тому +1

      @@iphoneographers Yes, I agree with you that having options is great and smartphones have come a long way in terms of camera performance. But isn't the whole point of using a smartphone is that it's cheap if you can't afford anything else and you might have one with you already. And they are still nothing in comparison to let's say a $1000 mirrorless camera with a cheap kit lens. Please don't get me wrong I'm not bashing your work or anyone who wants to add more to their phones. Hope my thoughts got conveyed properly. Peace!

      @@animaxxx4429 I totally understand your perspective. My daughter has the iphone 12 pro max. She does hair, so she takes pictures of her clients. I have 2 mirrorless cameras. I asked her do you want me to take pictures of your clients using the "better" camera. She said NO. Point and shoot is all I need. Plus the 12 pro max native camera is nice. I totally understood. In addition I also understand the rig game. I did it when I had my iPhone 7. People forget, there were movies, music videos all shot strictly on iPhones I’m sure they had it rigged for stability. Peace champ.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  3 роки тому +1

      That used to be more true, yes - but today phones are $$$ and the tech has caught up too. I totally understand that mindset though and depending on the gig often would suggest using a traditional camera. However, since we all already have a phone it’s great to use it in whatever way works either as a primary camera or a B camera. Thanks for watching!
