Gennady always does what is in the score, and doesn't usually add anything that is not in the score. He is what's known as a purist, and it was always absolutely incredible to play under him in the orchestra. #MAESTRO!!!
Most of the more than hundred rarely listed symphonies I watched on youtube were commentated as "masterpiece", "underestimated" etc. This one isnt. Its weak. Too much Richard Strauss. With the Exception of the fantastic forth movement!

Heard the third movement on the radio this afternoon. Had to find it again. Phenomenal music.
Thanks for posting this with the score. Very interesting. The 3rd remains my favorite, but it's useful to hear later works.

I've known this symphony for so many years and i still cannot understand why he sits out the english horn at the end of the 2nd movement
he liked to be paradoxical just for the sake of it. i think i can even think of other places in the scores where he can't be bothered with EH.
