A single sized HB will never sound as full as the real thing. It's just not possible to get the same amount of winding on it. What type of single coils are you using? I have a JB Junior in one Strat and a Little '59 in another and I like them both. But for my main Guitars I always use a full size HB.
They both sound killer! I think the PG has a little more bite to it. so it kinda depends on whether your guitar is already on the bright side or not. Or just get both and sell the one you don't use!
Building a Warmothcaster. Using a Jb trembucker for sure, but alittle lost on middle and neck. Thinking Hot Rail (neck), SSL-6 (middle). My concern is what volume/tone pots to use. Playing through Vox AC30 and Marshall Vintage Modern.
HSS Strat owner here like you and I have a 59 in my bridge. More bite than the PG to me and handles overdriven tones better to me. Have not replaced my single coils yet in the guitar. I play blues music thru and thru. Suggestions on replacements? 59 obviously a very vintage paf recreation pup so I'd like closely sounding SC's that wont be overpowered by it. I was thinking Fender tex mexs but I've only seen those really with the PG. Would they sound good with the 59? Still can get some real sweetness out of the 59
Nice tones there sir! Im about to replace my blacktop tele pups, and was kind of wanting that tone as well, or foo fighters-ish tone. Im looking for sd paf with a little more mid than the 59s, cause the 59 is kind of mid scooped (well at least that's what the people says). Im aiming for the seth lover, but some say the 59 handles dirty tones better. What would you guys recommend? Thanks a lot in advance :)
sinosinuj I found the 59 a bit scooped myself. I got the 59 custom/hybrid now which has great cleans but tonnes of mids. I have one in a strat and a tele.
sinosinuj I have the pearly gates in neck position of my tele, replacing the jazz, which I didn't like. I was considering a pearly gates bridge but I'm not sure. However, I did like the one in a lonestar strat I had a while ago. I'm not sure if it would suit the tele though.
I noticed you have used the pearly gates and the 59 in your strat.. Can you recall which humbucker had a heavier, beefier tone for hard and heavy rock. It seems those 2 humbuckers have very similar output in the specs. Great playing by the way...!!
Does anyone possibly have the information on how this guitar is wired? I bought this humbucker for the bridge of one of my strats, however I have one master volume knob and a master tone knob. I want the humbucker to see 500k and the single coils to see only 250. Any tips would be appreciated!
I have found my middle and neck pickups, Five-Two. But having a tough time with a bridge humbucker. Choices are as follows; Custom Custom, '59 model, Original Parallel Axis. I play through Vox AC30 and Orange Rockerverb 50.
@@thecustomshop78 I went with Parallel Axis. A few years after I replaced the pickups with Pearly Gates/ssl-2 (mid/neck). Still have the guitar don't play it much now a days.
Sounds awsome. I am in the course of converting an American Standard SSS Strat to HSS with a 59 Trembucker. The bridge tone pot is 250k with No-load functionnality. I presume it will work fine. But what about the volume pot which is 250k? Should I change for 500k? What the volume pot value in the video ?
Grégoire Colmet Daâge I did a 250k volume. Should be fine as the 59 with a 500k was hella bright. Some people like that but it was a little too bright for me
Great demo! Love the tone and playing. I already have lots of Gibsons and PRS, so with my HSS American strat, I want something a bit better than the stock Diamondback. I also want lots of clarity and sparkle, yet tight enough to handle hard rock. How do you think the 59 compares to the PG, Alnico II Pro or Hybrid 59/Custom?
Everything in this video sounds amazing! I like the '59 better than the Pearly Gates you try in your other video.. Have you (or anybody..) tried any single-coil-sized humbuckers that sound anything like those SSL2s? Also; How are they so quiet? (as in: low noise?) Thanks.
New Subscriber Here From New Orleans, La. Beautiful Guitar...Pickup has amazing tone. Awesome Playing. I would love to hear that in my USA G&L Legacy, in Bridge Position, Through My Friedman BE-50 Deluxe, Hooked Up To a Friedman 4x12 Speaker Cabinet, With Greenbacks On Top, and Vintage 30's On The Bottom. Best Sounding Speaker Cabinet, and Speaker Tone Combination That I Have Ever Heard. Dave Friedman Is a Tone-God. Take Care! Great Video! 😎😎😎😎😎
I'm a purist when it comes to strat single coils. They sound great and the humbucker to ME ruins that superb tone that guitar has with the singles, sorry.
+joweerocks Growing up in the super strat era I disagree for rock - heavy rock, but for whatever reason how he has things eq'd in this video, the neck single sounds awesome and the humbucker sounds muffled.
It might be because it's covered? Those nickel covers do tend to make things sound bassier. I took them off the pickups in my Les Paul-type and it brightened things up considerably.
joweerocks I know it's a two year old comment, but don't apologise for giving your opinion. I myself have owned a number of traditional Strats over the years and never found myself using the bridge pickup for cleans at all, only the 1, 2, 3 and 4 positions,. I decided to put a humbuck in the bridge as that was the position I use for big power chords and never desktop looks back, I much prefer it. ...sorry ;-)
The contrast between the neck and bridge pickups is like crack for my ears
I think the 59 sits better as strat tones and probably more versatile. The pearly gates seems like it'd be better for texas blues.
that strat is now a STONE COLD KILLER!!! SWEET JESUS that sounds amazing

Great playing and tone. It's clear and cutting.

Damn dude, that neck pickup is smooth... And that humbucker bites hard!
you have a great guitar sound!!
I am updating my HSS guitar. Do you use the three 500k potentiometers on your HSS guitar?
I'd love to have an answer to this question.
sounds like you need those tone pots back for your neck bro.. but awesome review
250k or 500k pot? thanks i have HS strat with duncan JB bridge and only volume pot 500k (no tone pots), it s too bright on the top

purenectar I see. Thank you very much for the input! How bout pearly gates on a tele?

That 59 bites harder than crocodile! Beautiful
Amazing tone man. AMAZING TONE.
This tone is so hot it’s illegal in most countries.
9 years after you posted this, and you sold on the 59 in a Strat.

Bro, I had the same question!
Found some info about it, it's called Seymour Duncan 250K Liberator, you can search it on eBay.
It looks like
Is that a 500 k liberator James Ryan you sound great when you play, too much talk I am missing the essential info..
wow that sounds great! I am currently considering between Pearly Gates and the 59 for my HSS strat, which one would you recommend?
Bro rock on. Good times
Da wäre noch die Frage worüber er spielt hört sich nach Kemper an....da klingt jeder pickup gut gell
awesome tone!
great sound!
500 for humbuckers 250 for single coils don't the 500's have more treble
I have found my middle and neck pickups, Five-Two. But having a tough time with a bridge humbucker. Choices are as follows; Custom Custom, '59 model, Original Parallel Axis. I play through Vox AC30 and Orange Rockerverb 50.
so what did you settle for the bridge for this setup?
@@thecustomshop78 I went with Parallel Axis. A few years after I replaced the pickups with Pearly Gates/ssl-2 (mid/neck). Still have the guitar don't play it much now a days.
Different for each Strat. This one is a 500 and it works really well in this guitar.

@denmut at 1:10 he tells you what the neck pickup is

What are the singlecoils in this guitar? Texas specials?
1:47 AC/DC inspired?

Are you happy with the 59 installed, as compared to the others before it?
thanx mate
Song at 2:18?

great
I liked the Pearly Gates one better.
What song is that at 2:19?
Darude Sandstorm
this is bad fucking ass sir
59 IS BETTER IN A STRAT TO ME CAUSE IT HAS CLASSIC STRAT SPARKLE AND HIGHS. PEARLY GATES IN A STRAT SOUNDS TOO CLOSE TO MY GIBSONS AND PRS.
Awesome playing! But not much of a different sound than a stock Hss. Thanks!
seymour duncan 59 humbucker is a great pickup..i have them in a few guitars they hit the spot..great playing btw
