I will take the plunge and proclaim Sabotage my favorite Black Sabbath album. A lot of fun things were happing in my 13 year old life when this came out and it always reflects that time period to me. The album is complete heaviosity. To me, this is the height of their output. One might say that there are overdubs of overdubs on this album but who cares. It rocks. Not a bad song on it.
I just posted a comment and then read yours and noticed we're the same age. Growing up with this kind of music was an experience for sure. Very heavy and dark and really fit with what was going on in my world at that time how I felt inside and like all the music I listened to it took my mind and my soul to a place they wouldn't have gone without it. I really believe I grew up when I did for the music, so glad I was there. ☮️
@@aschule5684 we were so lucky to have lived through that time period. We had a great album released every week by one act or another. We were spoiled and didn't even know it.
Black Sabbath is my favorite band. Sabotage is my favorite Sabbath album. Start to finish. Listening to it on vinyl is awesome. Especially quadraphonic!
A very aggressive sounding record. Hole in the Sky followed by Symtom of the Universe !!! Incredible! Ozzy whales and Bill plays like a savage! Amazing stuff! As a drummer, I thought Bill's drums sounded terrific. His cymbals sounded really crisp as well.
This was a very powerful album for me at 13. This and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath both. These guys really brought me an awareness of the unseen world around us that affects us. I saw life through the music I listened to. From Hole In the Sky to The Writ this was a heavy experience. Love all the Ozzy years but this one and SBS were the most significant for me.
SBS and Sabotage absolutely floored me when I heard them for the first time. The heaviest rock I had heard up to that point was Zeppelin but this was something altogether different. I’m still a huge Zeppelin fan but Sabbath is my favorite.
Saw them on this tour, opened with "Supertzar", with a huge illuminated cross hanging above the stage. It's funny how something from 48 years ago can be so vivid. Speaking of a vivid memory, Ozzy was wearing silver lame pants during this show and he split his pants, just let everything hang out. "Megalomania" is in my top 5 songs of theirs. As far as the album goes, it is my 5th fav by them, and of the Ozzy era. People always says there will never be another Beatles, I think you can say the same thing about Black Sabbath. As always, you are the king of the deep dive! Thanks for doing these Jeff!
Thanks Steve! I agree there will never be another Sabbath, right time, right sound, right image, everything came together perfectly. That’s hilarious about Ozzy’s pants. Yikes!
Before sabotage, I wasn't much into black sabbath. More into blues based boogie like foghat, j.geils, humble pie. I first heard this on 8 track riding with my friend, listening to the whole thing, noticing the subtle moods that made the heavy sound more dramatic. This lead me towards prog rock, the rest of the heavy metal herd never interested me, but I did pick up never say die years later and was pleased for much the same reasons, yet more subtle and mature with some swing provided by mr ward, jazz influence provided by horns
Probably my fave album or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. One of the main things I liked as a kid about SABOTAGE was it's intense heavyness which was still melodic in a simplistic manner.
As a fan who started with their first album the day it was released in the States, and every album since, this was a really special record. Still love it. 🤘😎
I would listen to this album, after smoking a bowl, over and over again, in my room while in high school. Great memories. Love this album. Its just Sabbath.
A truly eclectic Sabbath album. One of my go to party albums and the one that got me into Sabbath as a youth, like under the age of 9. This album along with Never Say Die are among my top favorites of the Ozzy era Sabbath catalog. Yes every song on Never Say Die for me is a fav as well, even the Breakout filler track. Looking forward to your deep dive on that album all the more. I always know when an album is flawless in my tastes when I have a hard time choosing my favorite songs among the selections. However, Hole in the Sky, Megalomania, The Thrill of it All, and The Writ are top on the list here hands down. Kudos on this doc. and looking forward to NSD in a few...
Thanks! Sometimes adversity inspires an artist to produce their best work and that seems to be the case here. It’s a very diverse collection of songs and I think that’s part of why it holds up so well. Thanks for watching!
I first heard this album as a Sabbath fan when I was about 17 I'm 54 now and this is still not only my favorite Sabbath album but it's my favorite heavy metal album of all time. This album is pure brilliance and pure genius of a band in turmoil and putting into feeling and creativity of music. No band today could ever come up with something like this going through personal and legal turmoils like Sabbath did with this masterpiece...
At least you respect the true genius of this album as it were. Definitely with you all the way on this being one of the greatest metal albums of all time. It's definitely my favorite Sabbath album and is the one that got me into the group during my childhood, like under age 10. Thanks to my dear old dad and his musical influence upon me while growing up. Also, this album was a definite go to party album for me, no matter what random substances I was on...mad respect brother!@@johnalkema8575
Another great video, brother! You got to my favorite album!!!! I bought this and Ride The Lightning on the same day. The riff on Symptom is one of the heaviest guitar parts ever recorded. I love the progressive elements of this album and Ozzy laid down some of his best vocals! Hole In The Frickin’ Sky!
This is a special album, one of the best ever. Pure amazing talent and art. Pretty sure the drummer is on something when he studio'd symptom of the universe.
Such a fantastic album, I bought it as soon as it came out, first time I played it, recorded it on cassette, I still have the album, only played once, I bought the CD years ago, I play it all the time, one of my favorite Sabbath albums.

That was a treat, undoubtedly my favourite Sabbath album being a teenager in the seventies, like several others on here. Everything I love about the band you can find on this album, especially the rarely played Thrill of it all. One of the heaviest albums of all time and a masterpiece by Sabbath! The production is incredible, especially for it’s time. It’s chuck full of great songs with arguably the greatest metal song of all time- Symptom of the Universe. Am I Going Insane (Radio), I believe, is Tony trying to duplicate the guitar overdubbing similar to his good friend Brian May from Queen, but of course, in a heavier style. IMO, it works really well!
Sabotage is my favorite Ozzy Sabbath album. It's got my 2 favorite Ozzy Sabbath songs Symptom Of The Universe & Megalomania. This album has Ozzy's best vocal performance ever.
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 coolest in my room for sure. My old neighbors are probably still hearing those three chords in their eternal sleep , ,
Some bands are just lucky to have that one guy in the band that sets the whole thing off. For Sabbath it was Ozzy. Noboby else would fit for what they were doing.
It’s a close vote between Sabotage and Vol 4 in my opinion. Everyone has their own preferences of course. There is no right or wrong. Ozzy is singing incredibly high on this album and on stage around this time. Check out the bootleg “ Live In Asbury Park New Jersey 1975” for example. I just wished they had kept “ Megalomania “ in their stage set a few years longer or brought it back for “ The End”, it’s a monster of a track, as good as anything by them or anyone else( and I’ve seen everyone else in my 69 years, trust me).
To me it's the best Sabbath album. I love them all, but this is their Opus. I remeber when I was in the Army just cruising around with some of the youg guys, and I had this playing, and they were blown away. They said WHO IS THIIS? I said it's sabbath. They just sat their mesmerized. Lol
The last song there is Ozzy screaming at the management ripping them off. The cover of the record is supposed to be creepy self explanatory, they wanted that evil image for attention, 💰💰💰

in my humble opinion this album is the last truly great hurrah from the original lineup. the two after it are good too but fer this kid when it comes to 'BLACK SABBATH' the first six are where it's at. i personally think this album is just as great as 'PARANOID' if not better in many respects. and considering they were all wasted out of their gords and barely speaking to each other when they made it is just all the more impressive.
I agree. Some of the magic was lost after this album and this is the last essential Sabbath album with Ozzy. I think many fans share your opinion that this is better than Paranoid. 👍👍
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 many people opine it's the first four from the original lineup i disagree big time i say the first six absolutely. 'SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH' was their 'SGT. PEPPER' they really expanded out and tried different thangs while staying true to their roots (and RICK WAKEMAN helped alot with that) and to me 'SABOTAGE' is somewhat a continuation of that but more powerful and angry than ever. the last two have great moments but aren't great all the way thru. certainly not bad, though.
I love this album and i think the cover is amazing. A Warped Reality....perfect fit for this band that was profoundly exposing how the world was in many cases a backward perception....a mere Symptom.
Yeah the cover is definitely…different. The music itself is fantastic. Sabbath were on such a run during this time. Like your commentary. You definitely had some weird footage to go along with this one. What the hell was up with those kids that old lady was yelling at? Creepy. Great job! I don’t know where my ranking is. My favorite album (maybe tie with SBS). Bill is a fuckin monster! The notes Ozzy hits on Thrill of it All gives me goose bumps. I think the keys work well in that song too.
Objectively, it is almost certainly not their best album. But subjectively, it is their finest hour because, for me, it taps into what I find to be any group at their most interesting: back up against the wall, fearing their end, and, as a result, they are playing with the freedom of condemned men
For me they could’ve just done an EP with hole, symptom, megalo and the writ with don’t start somewhere in there. And this would’ve been even more amazing! They could’ve used a Peter grant or brian Epstein too bad they always seems to have hard Luck with managers lawyers, botched album art, bad production etc… somewhere along the way they weren’t able to keep the Mgmt aspect working.
Perhaps not as innovative as the previous ones, but still WAY' better than it's reputation and everything that would follow(yikees) Super solid album in my opinion, and had they just continued with this level of crafmanship. As a fan I can't hear that this album was difficult to make at all,
Hole, Symptom and Thrill are the highlights IMO. Too Late and Supertzar are throw away tracks. Megalomania and The Writ are awesome but kind of busy, a little too much going on at times. Radio is forgettable.
Im "Sabbath" since Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (obviously Im quite old by now). Sabotage being my first "new" album. And still my favourite. The first four of course, then SBS. TE and NSD a disappointment. Nevertheless - Sabbath!

One of the absolute best riffs ever was left out: the 2nd part of Megalomania
Megalomania is a great track!
The weakness of the second side kinda kills it from being the "ultimate masterpiece"....
That cover🤔
4:35 structured smokin it
What about blow on the jug ?? The hidden track after the writ !! What do you think of it ?? I love it !
It’s great!
Perhaps not as innovative as the previous ones, but still WAY' better than it's reputation and everything that would follow(yikees)
Super solid album in my opinion, and had they just continued with this level of crafmanship. As a fan I can't hear that this album was difficult to make at all,
I agree. It doesn’t sound like a band heavy into drugs.
ozzy never sang as well as on this album..
Agreed!
Yes, but IMO he also sounded great on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and .... yes, Never Say Die
Yea I had a couple 8 tracks of this tape. Probly why im.dementiated
I question whether I need multiple copies in multiple formats and the answer is YES!
My mother hated this album.
And shame on you, fading down Megalomania when one of Tony's best ever riffs is about to kick in...
I always thought people fast forwarded through the songs anyway. /
Sometimes I get bummed that the members of Sabbath don't praise this album more. It's possibly their finest recording.
It’s an incredible album. Maybe the botched album cover has something to do with it?
Volume 4 is the best...but Sabotage is a close 2nd!!
My man, have you ever tried to play guitar? I remember in one of the other vids you said you dont. Anyway im sure you would enjoy it.
I have tried and tried but was never able to play with any amount of proficiency, I would trade any of my talents to be able to.
Hole, Symptom and Thrill are the highlights IMO. Too Late and Supertzar are throw away tracks. Megalomania and The Writ are awesome but kind of busy, a little too much going on at times. Radio is forgettable.

The True Real Sabbath ⚡🔥💪👊😎🤘
I think Megalomania..could've used a little more Cowbell.
Haha! Of course!
I’m sure symptom of the universe would sound so awesome if Slayer covered it.
Im "Sabbath" since Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (obviously Im quite old by now). Sabotage being my first "new" album. And still my favourite. The first four of course, then SBS. TE and NSD a disappointment. Nevertheless - Sabbath!
This seems to be many people’s favorite album and I can’t argue with that. 👍
