I really appreciate you redoing this review! I feel like I got a way better idea of what this grinder is from this video and I'll most likely pair it up with the Flair I plan on getting soon. Thanks!
Thanks Coffee Nerd, very. helpful as I look at upgrading from my old Baratza Encore but not spending a lot of money, I especially like the comments about flat burr vs. conical. Keep on Brewing !
I really like mine as a budget "git 'er done" grinder with the Pulsar. My favorite recipe so far is to grind 25 g around setting 10, fill the rest of the Pulsar with boiling water, and open the valve to where it's draining really slowly...I've had brews that take 8 and 50 minutes that were both juicy and rich with less bitterness than I would expect, though clarity and complexity are still lacking. It does taste different than a standard immersion recipe that goes on for the same amount of time. Using a medium roast right now and am guessing that longer ratios would be best for lighter roasts.
That was an aggressively wet RDT lol With grinders being this accessible now we just need espresso machines themselves to catch up in value. I've avoided espresso at home but it's getting very tempting
Great video man! I wouldn't let any of the haters get to you. Keep going whether your comments are fair or not, they are your thoughts and no one else can blame you for them. Interestingly, this grinder is a lot more expensive in AUD ($550+) and since that's almost identical to CAD, it does change the value offer when compared to other entry-level grinders so maybe your first video was more on point than you thought. I find it the same when I do videos on other machines too because I do them with the Australian market in mind and then realise that a lot more people from the US watch them and often machines cost a lot more in different parts of the world (eg: Breville DB is not good value at the price in US/EU). But keep up the fantastic videos. Can't wait to see this channel pop off!
Awesome review sir Aaron! Didnt really see the first vid you took down but I've been waiting for more reviews of this grinder. Seems like its kind of being underrated for its price and people be hyping the opus or the encore esp. A showdown between the opus and sk40 would be awesome content.
Just got mine today and I had to grind on the very coarse setting still running 4:30 brew time on 18g 300ml V60. Seems like purely espresso grinder unless it came with shims installed that I need to take out? Right now settings 1-8 are unusable and no way it can go French press
That’s interesting, with this grinder I was down in the 3-6 range for espresso if memory serves. No shims or anything like that that I’m aware of and I’ve taken the grinder apart. I suppose it could be the coffee but still all the course should be really course!
Gracias por el video!! Estimado cual es la diferencia con el molinillo ITOP40s de AliExpress? Son exactamente iguales. Es una copia el ITOP o son realmente el mismo producto? Muchas gracias. Saludos.
Great video, as always. I was disappointed when you pulled the video, I didn’t have a chance to see it and for transparency it would be great if you could have it unlisted but provide the link e.g. here or in the description of this video for those who are either unsure about the credibility and/or interested in the nitpicky stuff. I would’ve loved assurance that none of the pressure here came from the retailer or manufacturer. And lastly, I personally would’ve loved for you to nitpick more, for me personally, next time I buy a grinder I’ll probably be looking at a bigger budget than 200 bucks but cheaper grinders fit inside bigger budgets and having more nitpicks would help me decide between different grinders at different price points, ie why choose a more expensive grinder if this one punches above its weight? Why is this better or worse than a niche zero or a lagom mini etc? What makes it good at this price point but subject to criticism if put up against more expensive products? Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the comment and for watching. I can assure you there was absolutely no pressure from either Turin or Espresso Outlet to take down the other video. I just really felt like I didn't do a fair review based on the price point. I felt like the things I liked about the grinder and how it performs for only $200 didn't translate well in that video and it seemed like I was really hammering the nitpicky stuff harder than I should given the price point. I do feel this grinder punches above it's weight, I would say the only thing I don't know is the longevity of the motor or other internal components, time will tell there.
Thanks for the video! Damn, sadly the adjustment time isn't a minor issue. The thought of adjusting for pour over and espresso over and over seems horrible. Obviously the video's made, it's 9 months old but for the future a real time, real speed showcase of how long it takes to adjust from one point to another would be cool. I also ended up buying this thing, apparently the DF54 is notably better overall but I just can't stand that plastic, crappy little cup or the plastic bits holding it.
Aaron, can you put the wood cap on minus the bellows? I'm considering this but I hate bellows. You have the best review on this grinder, and your channel is grossly underrated, but at least you might see my comment
Thanks!!! Unfortunately the wood lid doesn't fit well in the funnel. You have to remove the anti-popcorn insert and even then it doesn't fit snuggly down inside. You could hoverer sand down the lower inset lip of the lid to fit that way, then you could leave the bellows off but you wouldn't have the anti-popcorn insert installed. Thanks for watching my videos!!!
Welcome! He’s referring to the yield of espresso after the extraction. He put in 18g of grounds and yielded 36g of espresso within the 30sec he’s ran the extraction. Which is a classic 2:1 ratio recipe where you yield 2g of espresso for every 1g of coffee grounds. Hope that makes sense.
Hi there!! Yes like Christopher said I’m referring to the ratio of coffee to water and the amount of time on which it takes to achieve that amount of output. So for example like Christopher said I used 18gm of coffee for this shot and I was actually targeting 55gm of extracted coffee on 25-30 seconds which is a pretty standard shot time. From experience with this coffee I’ve found the best taste with it around a 1:3 ration so 1 part coffee to 3 parts water. For some coffees a bigger shot like this is beneficial but not for all. A traditional shot is closer to a 1:2 ratio or 18gm coffee to 36gm of water. You can play around with several variables including your dose (amount of coffee), your extraction amount (amount of output), the time it takes to pull the shot, pre infusion time, and pressure. When it comes to timing your shot there are a couple schools of thought, some people start timing when the first few drops fall into the cup, and some people time from the start of the water flow in their machine. You also have to factor in pre infusion time of your machine can do that. In my scenario I have my machine setup for a 7 second low pressure pre infusion, then the pump kicks on fully to ramp the pressure up to about 8 or 9bar. My machine starts timing as soon as I hit start to is incudes the pre infusion time. I hope this helps and isn’t too confusing 😀
@@coffeenerdaaron thank you so much for amazing detailed answer :) !! take great care of yourself !!! i will definitely be using these advices and play with said variables !!!
Pulling down a video really sounds like you capitulated to outside pressure, and lowers your credibility. It is perfectly good to do a follow up and expand / contradict / change your views. Especially since there are updates to the product.
I respect your viewpoint but neither Turin nor Espresso Outlet asked me to take the video down. That was my decision based on me feeling like I didn't do a fair review of the grinder based on it's price point.
You did this before ( bomber tools i think) and yeah the first time you were negative and could have constructed it more vaguely i guess. We know you need smth to review and very negative comments will hurt you. Keep it kinda vague then, and im sure we can read between the lines.. Bear ive seen would tell that sk and sd are worse than better grinders and you can always imply what real pro and cons to tell, and be objective at the same time. I agree with Mike here too, and you can take the critisism as you like..
@@coffeenerdaaron You posted a comment on the products later, and not that the vid that was taken down. But i feel the same thing happened here. But i might have got this wrong then.. But either way, we like honest criticism and the more on point the better for better or worse.
I bothered with it because not everyone can afford those grinders and some people prefer conical burrs, coffee is a subjective and a personal preference thing. Also I have a lot of grinders including several 64mm flats up to the 98mm’s in the EK43. I do these reviews so people who are in different budgets and have different preferences get some info that may help them before they spend their money.

Thank you Aaron! How many grams/kg for seasoning? And do you share your grind size setting?
Would you recommend this over the Baratza Encore ESP? Thanks for the review!
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately I haven’t used an ESP so I can’t give you any honest information on how this compares, sorry 😣
Super video. I think I am going to purchase one of these.
Is there something else you would recommend around this price point?
I would be curious on your thoughts on the Turin DM47
I haven't used one yet but I hear people like it. If I can get my hands on one I'll make a review for sure!

Do you recommend this grinder if I use most for v60 and French press every while ?
Is it worth it to spend $150 more and get the DF 64 Gen 2 ? I do espresso and V60 and really only like light roast coffee
Yes it is absolutely worth the additional money to get the DF64 Gen 2 for your needs! 😊
Subscribed. Good job
Thanks!!😊
Can this be used without the grind adjustment auger? This would facilitate changing from v60 to espresso quick
I thought about that too but I think the adjustment may walk as it’s grinding.

What espresso machine do you have? It could be a combination of the coffee you’re using and your espresso machine.
199? Where? The site you listed has it for 299 on sale for 219
At the time I filmed this they were $199, price must have gone up!
