  • If you're doing a Timing belt job on a 3rd gen Toyota 4runner and wondering how you should go about loosening and tightening the crankshaft pulley bolt then this video is for you. If your 4runner has a manual transmission, you should be able to put it in 5th gear to keep the crank from spinning but automatics will just spin the torque converter. I show How I loosened the bolt with an impact and used a cheap special tool with a big 1/2in torque wrench to tighten the Crank bolt to Toyota's torque specification. It's important that the bolt is tightened to the proper spec or you risk having it loosen up while driving. hope you found this useful. thanks for watching.

    My friend's crankshaft on his 2000 4runner came loose, he returned home by tow truck, I have a 2001 4runner and I need to change the water pump, now I know the torque.

      That sucks! Maybe someone didnt tighten it down properly or used the original spec which toyota later updated to a higher torque. I destroyed my funny bone while doing this haha.

    If you’re going to leave The radiator cover the radiator with a piece of cardboard I see people nick the radiator with a tool or on accident hit it while pulling the pulley off and put a hole in it or fins on it and Cardboard is cheaper than a radiator

    0:21 LOL oh my. That is a very old diesel trick. Very, very old. I've never personally seen it but a coworker and good friend of mine has done it on some ancient Fairbanks-Morse and Pielstick engines. But those turn quite a bit slower than a car.

      haha my coworkers have done it a few times, can be a bit risky but does usually work

    The center part of my crankshaft fell out of the car after my crankshaft bolt cam loose, but the rest (outside) of the crankshaft is still intact with belts and all. do you think I need a whole new crankshaft or could I replace just the center part? Thanks.

    How did you slide the crank pulley off with your hands do you need a 3 jaw puller or specialty tool to get that pulley off?

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  Рік тому

      it just slide off by hand if I remember right, depends on the vehicle

    That thing you put the tool into to not have the crankshaft spin when you tighten it fell out today? How important is it? I have heard it is only mean for the tool to remove the pulley but I could be wrong.

      not sure what your talking about exactly. the crank shaft holder tool? the crank bolt needs to be torqued to spec unless you want it backing out. only way to do that is to keep the crank from spinning while tightening. if you have a manual you might be able to put it in a gear to hold it
