    Great vid! Thanks for doing the leg work for us!
    For future reference/recipes, if you do your measurements by weight instead of by volume (i.e., 3.5g vs. 1/2cup), you won't have to pack stuff down and you'll get a more consistent end product.

    Def recommend this with brine shrimp! Works great! Holds shrimp together well. Normally when I feed brine the filter grabs lot of it, in gelatin form there's no worries. I used same recipe as yours just replaced pellets with brine dust. My fry love it.

    THANK YOU (to you) for this DIY video! I have some bottom dwelling dwarf cichlids and some leftover floating Hikari mini cichlid pellets that I made this gel out of. I have no fry in the tank, but my adult cacatuoides cichlids and golden pencilfish love the DIY food gel. 10/10 would do again. Keeping this recipe for sure.

    Hello! This was such a wonderful Video! I watched it with my boyfriend and he got very excited about making FishFood :D what a wonderful way to motivate people to take good care of their Fishes!! Also it is nice that you tell everything so clearly and show details, cause my mother tongue is not English so this video was very easy to follow!

    Love the ice cube tray with pop outs but thought you might like to try something I have been doing for awhile. I put my mix between two big sheets of wax paper, roll it out thin, and when gel sets up I cut it up into cubes (1"x1"x .25"), then I put them in a ziplock and freeze for long term use where I take out the small thin squares for use as needed. I also add liquid vitamins and will blend in powdered spirolina, chopped beef heart, spinach, potato, shrimp, etc etc (however you feel fit for your own particular fish).

    For any reptile keepers out there this also works with gut loading feeder insects! (Mix mostly dog food with cat food and fish food and anything else you feel, like vitamins and calcium then add the gelatin and boom: a much healthier and cheaper alternative to those expensive pet store gel foods)

    Can these be used with bettas and molly's? How long does the cube last? My main concern is not overfeeding the fish.

  • @mattxlau
    @mattxlau 10 років тому

    I really like the idea of gel foods and the video was great. My only concerns would be regarding its effects on the water quality as the gelatin dissolves into the water; and second, if the fish's stomach can handle the gelatin compounds and digest it properly.

    Love this recipe, man. Tried it with my koi and was very pleased. Do you think I could add calcium carbonate to it as well as a shrimp food to fortify their exoskeleton? Need to supplement calcium someway since the stuff isn't water soluble.

    • @am1shvom1t
      @am1shvom1t 9 років тому

      I'm pretty sure he mentioned that he hadn't tried anything else but pellets/sticks in the recipe, and was unsure of the results of adding any other types of foods. I used a 50/50 ratio of Hikari Cichlid Gold mini floating pellets and sinking shrimp/veggie sinking sticks to make my food powder. Next time I plan on using some freeze dried blood worms into the mix, which would probably powder up pretty well.
