    In Mexico the normal biological media are really spensive(like 2 o 3 times their cost in USA) so most of the mexican aquariums have lava rock( called tezontle here), but there volcanic rock in gardening stores that have a smaller grain size like half inch or less , sorry for my bad english.

    Suggested future topic: starting nitrogen cycle in a new tank. Not many have started more new tanks than you Joey, can you cover what works best for you, pitfalls to watch for, etc?

      I’m no Joey, but the recipe is fairly simple when I set up a completely new tank and don’t have access to pre-established biological media: pH of 7-7.5, heater set to 76 degrees (or whatever you’ll keep your fish at), Dr Tim’s One and Only, and an ammonia source (fish food or the little bottles of it Dr Tim sells). Just keep testing until nitrates go to zero and nitrites appear, do a water change then start adding fish. Typically takes a week to ten days.

    • @bens4801
      @bens4801 3 роки тому +1

      @@bigbowlowrong4694 You got it the other way around. It should be Ammonia > Nitrites > Nitrates (When nitrates show up and nitrites go 0, you have completed cycling your tank)

    Thank you for posting this video Joey! I have 5 tanks running; finally got quilt batting and lava rock for all filters. Since then my water is CRYSTAL clear, parameter levels are perfect, and I no longer waste money on filter cartridges. For less than $10 I have 3 months worth filter media for ALL of my setups. You're a lifesaver!

    I picked up a large bag of poly-fil the other day. The quilt matting is better than the big bag of poly-fil because it comes in sheets. That'd help a ton when packing a filter. Nice one Joey.

      the biggest issue with this stuff is fire retardant chemicals. I'm never sure if it has it, and it can kill fish. I know here in the UK all soft furnishings have to be fire retardant by law, so does that mean all fillings are too?

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent 9 років тому

      :D I enjoy it. Throwing a "typical accent" over an entire country is too much of a generalization anyway. The US has a ton of different accents. I find it interesting to hear the differences. Why should they be there? Why should they not? Interesting questions.

Do you recommend switching filter, to any of the above options?

    • @Garethaxz
      @Garethaxz 9 років тому

      +Francisco Traverzo The motion of fluidized beds makes them self-cleaning, all you have to worry about is the reliability of your power supply, best to have some kind of backup method if you get outages as still sand will kill your bacteria off.

    I heard anything inert can be used from bottle caps to rocks so long as it's actually inert non organic material. Avoiding soloable material/mineral forms and reagents that would effect pH and stuff like most metals.

    Hello, I have commented on your other video but now I saw this one where you said it is better to use lava rocks. I need one for my crabs, it is a 10 gal tank but I will have it water and land. how much lava rocks should I use and also since I am not filling the whole tank can it go laying down? Thank you

    Could you do a combination of plastic pot scrubbies and lava rock in your sump to create better bio media filtration? Have the pot scrubbies as your wet/dry and your lava as your submerged media?

    i was going to buy ceramic rings to place in the fluval c3 chemical filter basket but good to know that the lava rock is a nice alternative.. unless any of you guys said that ceramic rings are superior, btw any ideas on what i should buy as a substitute to the fluval C-nodes in the C3 trickle filter?

    Joey do you ever use activated carbon as a form of filtration? If so, why or why not?

    For the last 3 years, I'm been running 2 5 tray canisters with 1 mechanical and 4 lava rock filled trays in each.
