Its if you have layered hair. once you put it ontop of your head, the layers may start to come out, so by curling inward you ensure the shorter hairs dont flick out of the braid making you look like a hot mess :)

You can use ribbon to sew the braids down. It's called hair taping. It suspect it takes longer, but it actually holds for a day or two.
