I used to live in Whitianga and drive a bus for Intercity...When the Whangapoa road was closed ( back when it was a gravel road) due to weather I used to drive the bus through the 309... was VERY exciting😊
@@_boric I can’t find a brand name anywhere on it I’ve tried many over the years but this one fits and was specific to my vehicle I’m pretty sure I bought it from Amazon.com.au

@@bobfreeman9574 appreciate the positive comment
Thanks
Glad to see you're able to drive pretty close to Castle Rock. When we visit the place a couple years back all gates were locked.

That must have been a challenge back then
@@JL2OFFRD Yep. Both the Whangapoa road and 309 roads were both challenges ..especially in a bus 😬
Great video, might add 309 to the to-do list for the next few weekends..... :)
Good watch enjoyed 😉
When I use to live in Whitianga in the 1970’s, the reason why it was called the 309 road, was this road has 309 bends on it…
Thanks mate
Hey mate, im assuming you were on a solo mission? I keen to find more solo tracks
Yes solo on that one and most of my other trips
Check out some of the other videos , up until recently it has just me and my dog

The name 309 arose from the "fact" that the old horse drawn coach took 3 hours and 9 minutes to get from one end to the other. Fact.
@@evanpenny348 your the first to tell us that !
Many have said it’s how many corners there are on the road but I wasn’t about to count them
Ninety Mile beach isnt Ninety miles long. Sooo 309 314 close enough , id not bother checking 🙂.
309 road Has 309 corners hence the name 😂 Have never confirmed this
I had heard that but wasn’t sure about it
And I didn’t count either
Driven over that road back in the 60s through to 2023 and had 314 corners last I heard never bothered to count
Next time I’ll take a passenger to count the corners
