I heard this song in an episode called 'Gently with Class' (season 5 episode 2: www.imdb.com/title/tt2346824) from the TV series 'Inspector George Gently' and fell absolutely in love with it. Unfortunately I couldn't find a full length version that wasn't chopped up like in the episode so I decided to upload it myself.
I apologise for low-quality pics.
I just watched this episode of George Gently and fell in love with this song! Thank you for this wonderful share!
I see this on the same episode in Italy, but I don't understand , Google don't find this singer, who is she? Thanks
Exactly the same thing happened tp me
Me too 😊
Me too!
I fell in love with Ebony
As her father in the Gently episode said in glorious accent when he heard of her drowning:
"...a voice that'd make the angels weep"
One of the most brilliant scripted lines Ive ever heard.
Just watched George Gently, and saw, heard this amazing lady...what a beautiful voice..I am in Love with Ebony, my heart is lost to her!
So moving a song:)
It just so happens it was her birthday yesterday. Turned 28. Which makes her 18 in the sequel of inspector Gently (se5 e2)
Great song! And yes the Gently series put me onto this amazing music. Gently is great, Ebony Buckle rocks my world
That's what got me here as well.
Yes totally agree
Fell in love with the pretty young lady, the song and the wonderful voice. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I used to beg my mother to play this on the guitar for me when I was a child. For whatever reason I loved the tragedies! Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald, Wreck of the Old 99, Wellerman, etcetera.
What a great song sung so well with a lovely clear voice. I thought Itwas an Irish song with her slight accent and a young man playing the Bodhran in a brief shot. It oribnated in the North of England in the 17th Century. What a beautiful giri is Ellen, and very talented in the theatre .
L'ho appena ascoltata in tv in una serie... Mi ha fatto impazzire!! ❤❤❤Voce stupenda, musica altrettanto!! Bravissimi.. 💯💯💯
A me pure ha fatto impazzire ed eccomi a riascoltarla a ripetizione ...
Bellissimo brano ed eseguita in modo meraviglioso .
❤🎶🎻🎶❤
I am from Greece. I hear this song at least 2 times a day. Great song .GREAT MELODY
Yassas. Bring her to Greece. They'd love her. A modern bard Singing tales of the goings on in the castles
Some great covers of this song. This one's the best.
Sometimes It´s a kind of " Funny " ..just watching a Crime Story ( George Gently ) and THEN....it STRIKES YOU....the SONG, The Voice...I have forgotten the Story of the Crime...but the VOICE and The Beauty....I shall never forget
Watched George Gently and saw this wonderful segment and now a fan Ebony Buckle
And she sing the song with that crystal clear lyric and dramatic voice. She must have success. So beautiful!
This is absolutely brilliant . What a singer . Love her !!!
So pure. So good. Can hear it the whole day. Goosebumps ❤
What can I say everyone's gave the same compliment, great song, great vocals brilliant band keep it up you should go far well done ❤❤
Such a splendid song...❤ from Italy
I just saw this episode of Inspector Gently and went to find it on UA-cam thinking that I would only find the Fairport Convention version. I was so glad to find this! Thank you for posting
You're welcome (^-^)
Amazing song and what amazing voice. Definitely would make the angels weep 😢
A holiday, a holiday, and the first one of the year.
Lord Darnell's wife came into church, the gospel for to hear.
And when the meeting it was done, she cast her eyes about,
And there she saw little Matty Groves, walking in the crowd.
"Come home with me, little Matty Groves, come home with me tonight.
Come home with me, little Matty Groves, and sleep with me till light."
"Oh, I can't come home, I won't come home and sleep with you tonight,
By the rings on your fingers I can tell you are Lord Darnell's wife."
"What if I am Lord Darnell's wife? Lord Darnell's not at home.
For he is out in the far cornfields, bringing the yearlings home."
And a servant who was standing by and hearing what was said,
He swore Lord Darnell he would know before the sun would set.
And in his hurry to carry the news, he bent his breast and ran,
And when he came to the broad mill stream, he took off his shoes and swam.
Little Matty Groves, he lay down and took a little sleep.
When he awoke, Lord Darnell he was standing at his feet.
Saying "How do you like my feather bed? And how do you like my sheets?
How do you like my lady who lies in your arms asleep?"
"Oh, well I like your feather bed, and well I like your sheets.
But better I like your lady gay who lies in my arms asleep."
"Well, get up, get up," Lord Darnell cried, "get up as quick as you can!
It'll never be said in fair England that I slew a naked man."
"Oh, I can't get up, I won't get up, I can't get up for my life.
For you have two long beaten swords and I not a pocket-knife."
"Well it's true I have two beaten swords, and they cost me deep in the purse.
But you will have the better of them and I will have the worse."
"And you will strike the very first blow, and strike it like a man.
I will strike the very next blow, and I'll kill you if I can."
So Matty struck the very first blow, and he hurt Lord Darnell sore.
Lord Darnell struck the very next blow, and Matty struck no more.
And then Lord Darnell he took his wife and he sat her on his knee,
Saying, "Who do you like the best of us, Matty Groves or me?"
And then up spoke his own dear wife, never heard to speak so free.
"I'd rather a kiss from dead Matty's lips than you and your finery."
Lord Darnell he jumped up and loudly he did bawl,
He struck his wife right through the heart and pinned her against the wall.
"A grave, a grave!'' Lord Darnell cried, "to put these lovers in.
But bury my lady at the top for she was of noble kin."
Magical voice, Great violin, Beautiful face and Hair too.
Thanks for the upload. I was getting sick of watching the fractured desktop clip from George Gently.
What a beautiful voice.
i thought it was only me that did that!
Great voice, great music. I'd listen all day
Great episode of "Inspector George Gently"!
Lovely James Norton (with that hand salute) and Ebony Buckle to the beat of Matty Groves and Silver Dagger :-)
Greetings from Bulgaria!
Wow, just heard your voice on George Gently, Acorn tv, Canada. Liked your voice and style so looked you up. Not something I'd normally look for, but truly enjoy your music. Thank you.
It's very nice of you to say but I'm just a fan sharing a song I liked because it wasn't uploadet here in its full version.
I think you should go to Ebony Buckle's UA-cam channel: ua-cam.com/channels/popIRuclM_WPVXJ44BBsKQ.html and tell her the kind things you've just told me in this comment. This song isn't uploaded on her official channel and it's my impression that she isn't that active :( but if you have the patience she has commented on some of the comments down below - mainly from people asking where they can find her songs.
Have a nice day.
Appalachian Mountain people blood, yet Squire George Gently brings this back to our memory....
In the Appalachian version, Matty's killer is a big shot, just not a lord. Instead of settling for stabbing his wife through the heart, pinning her again st wall, he cuts off her head & kicks it down the hall. Such uncalled for brutality!
found it by watching the (great) Gently series too... The only song I bought throught iTunes
What alady, what a song, the whole package. Gid bless UK
a very talented lady

Great song, great music. Makes you want to speak with that accent. Thanks!
I like this very much and have saved it to listen to again. Thank you. I will be looking out for more of your work.
+Anne England Thank you very much :)

wonderfull voice!!!! i want more songs. From Spain, thank you so much.
Geordie English accent - sung by Australian Girl -singing a Northern English song
It went wrong. I agree fully it was a wonderfull song in
George Gently: I have searched for it for some time
I just binged on Gently and simply fell in love with this and there was another in the same episode but I don't know what it is.."it's all over now "?
She does sing another song called "Silver Dagger" in the same episode (which is also uploaded here on my channel), but I'm not sure if that's the one you're referring to ^^'
@@sasusakufangirl thanks and I found it...'it's all over now' by Roo Savill...it's quite beautiful 😍
@@markdziadulewicz6160 Good to hear you found it (^-^)
What a talented artist, shame no cd available, disgusted to hear that she couldn't stay in the uk.
Now that is axe sharpening music. Thank you
What an amazing singer. Unfortunately, you can only purchase her songs as mp3 singles. No CD available. Somebody needs to get their act together. What a wasted opportunity.
No CDs available yet but please do follow my youtube channel and also www.ebonybuckle.com for all of my news! x
Just saw the Gently episode and said to companions, who on earth is that girl with the amazing voice, she must be professional singer!
I've watched George Gently many times, and every time I've watched Gently with Class, I've intended to find out who this was, but forgot by the end of the episode. This time, I had the good sense to stop in the middle and look it up. I've heard many different renditions of Matty Groves--this may just be the best, unless you want to count the hilarious version Frank Hayes did on his album Never Set the Cat on Fire...for no apparent reason, the track is labeled "Like a Lamb to the Slaughter", which made it hard for me to relocate it. Turns out that an earlier album of his also has it, and a not very good copy of it is on YT, but--ua-cam.com/video/I4DDLsufYSg/v-deo.html
Wish I could get this on cd
Best version ever!
Thanks so much for uploading this! I was wondering if you had the full version of Silver Dagger from the same episode, and if you would consider uploading it too?
very good................................................
Wow!
Thanks for the upload, great sound.
The best Version there is........
wow!!
I just all what to say..my Heart is all on " Stand "
Can U believe, even tho from Australia, a Commonwealth country, they wouldn't let her stay in the UK, cause her Brit rocker hubby didn't make enough money, her earnings not allowed in2 the equation.
It's one of my favourite renditions of the song but it's a shame they had to cut out some of the key verses.
Mine too (^-^) and I agree - I would have loved to hear her sing the song in its entirety.
being part of a soundtrack , guess full version would've taken too much of a movie's time...yet, short form was quite on point as the story went.
EEH By Gum Lass !!!!!
I LuVV U T DEATH N BAKK AGAiN sweet girl W da voice of an ANGeL..TEARS R IN MY EYES .XXXX
This is FAR from the full version! It skips the entire part where Lord Barnard kills Matty Groves. From Paul Clayton's version:
Get up, get up, little Matty Groves
Get up as quick as you can.
I'll not have it said in the north Scotland
That I murdered a naked man.
I can't get up and I won't get up
I dare not for my life.
For here you have two bitter swords, and I have nary a knife.
Well if I have two bitter swords
They cost me deep in the purse
And you may take the better sword
And I will take the worse.
And you may strike the first blow. You strike it like a man.
And I will strike the second blow
And I'll kill you if I can.
The first stroke little Matty struck
It hurt Lord Barnard sore.
The second stroke Lord Barnard struck
Little Matty couldn't fight no more.
Then it goes on with Lady Barnard declaring "I love Matty Groves in his gore of blood/More than you and all your kin."
At which point Lord Barnard chops her head off "and he stove it against the wall."
Nice little story.
Completely messed up the song
This isn't the full version. Some of the best of it is missing. I quit when I realized the third stanza was missing ... maybe more. Does anyone know where I can find Ebony's version of the entire song?
I'm sorry to tell you that this IS indeed the full version. Ebony Buckle didn't include some of the stanzas in this version - I was disappointed too when I found out :(
This is the version I found when I searched the iTunes Store and I looked again after reading your comment to make sure I didn't miss anything. If you manage to find another version where she sings the missing stanzas please tell me because I would love to hear that version as well :)
If you wish you can find her UA-cam channel and ask her directly - she hasn't uploaded many of her songs there, though :(, but she has commented on some of the comments on this video (with a link to her own website if I remember correctly), so if you want to you can go look there.
Have a nice day :)
@@sarajrgensen4150 This is the same as the one on Spotify, so we have to assume that this is the whole thing, sadly.
This version is part of the soundtrack for an episode (Gently with class) of British investigation tv series, Inspector George Gently, so the lyrics had to fit a certain plot, and movie time :)
@@NobleKale This is indeed the Gently soundtrack, but I was asking if Ebony had done a full version of this song on any recording or live show.
Really well performed, but not the full version.
Hello Dave Thanks for your comment 😊 I know there are more verses to this song but Ebony Buckle chose not to include them in her version of the song. The "full version" in the title to this video is a reference to the fact that before I uploaded this video, Ebony Buckle's version of the song wasn't uploaded to UA-cam in its full lenght - only short clips from the episode. Hope that cleared things up a bit 😊
It sounds great but it skips at least two entire verses.
I am aware but this is the full version of Ebony Buckle's cover which was made for a tv show - the missing verses would have sounded nice being sung by her, though.
Uk and Australia are both part of The Great Britain Commonwelth as far as I know. And both England and Australia have the same roots in history. It is a shame that England disn’t allow her to settle down in England. And so many forigners with no historic roots, they can enter into England with no historical roots. And she is such a wonderful artist with a stunning voice. England needs her in brexit times.
Hi Peder, all is ok, I am back in London! Thanks for your concern and please do check out my youtube channel for all my new music x
Ebony Buckle wow! Nice o hear. All the good luck I wish for you and your beautiful voice.
@@EbonyBuckleOfficial That's great news Ebony 👍 . All the best from Ian in Australia . How,s Susan these days ? 🙂
@@ianharrison956 She's great! Hope you have seen her new music video...ua-cam.com/video/3qsbt2MIHuY/v-deo.html
@@EbonyBuckleOfficial 🙂yeah I did Ebony . Excellent stuff mate👍😉.
Not the complete version of the song. The part where the lord kills Matty is missing
I know that but that part sadly wasn't included in this cover version - maybe because it was used in a tv show, but that's just a guess.
@@sasusakufangirl just to make clear was not criticizing at all nor did i want to suggest you took anything out. It was complete what Ebony sang, she just did not sing the complete version :-) Who cares, she sings beautifully
@@Ed19601 Glad to hear it was just a misunderstanding and the last part we can absolutely agree on - I would have loved for her to make a version where ALL the parts were included.
Why the missed verse?...tune makes no sense without it imo
Yes indeed there is quite a lot missing from this rendition
Part of a soundtrack, and the lyrics fitted a certain plot & movie time
Sorry but not full version 😡Eva Abraham sings it just as good if not better full version
Thank you for telling me - I'm aware, though, that the original song has a LOT more verses (and have heard some as well), but Ebony Buckle didn't include all of them in her version.
Nah , this is brilliant mate !!
Her version is not complete either. Yes, there's even more to it.
I much prefer the Fairport Convention version
Me too!
great version
