I am a bigger girl and i didnt take that scene negatively. I think, if anything, Charlotte was encouraged to be herself and not be insecure and hard on herself. The gallery owner helped her without knowing.
Exactly. She just saw an example of a happy and confident woman, that accepts herself. And that she also should not be bothered that she has to meet a standard of youth and XS size and be like other two employees in order to be accepted by that circle of people.
Yall are missing the point. She thought she had to be a certain look to fit in with the younger girls but at the end of the day it's about what she knows. The bigger girl was recruited by someone she really respects. He recruits you based in your talent, not your size. She's fine just the way she is and embracing that was the point of the bathroom scene. The bugger stiil looked good even with some skin showing in a flattering more modern way and was very friendly just like the other girls.
I haven't watched the full episode so I'm not sure on overall context, but this came across to me as a positive, affirming message as opposed to a toxic one. I can see how it can be interpreted as Charlotte feeling better in comparison to her (toxic), but it actually came across to me as Charlotte being confronted with an overweight woman who's confident and successful - and not ashamed to be herself, and it inspired her to feel more comfortable with herself by example, which I think is really great actually. AJLT includes so many messages of acceptance of all walks of life, so it makes sense that they also include body positivity in that mix. I'm glad they did - really great stuff. I have a relatively well tuned fatphobia radar so I wouldn't have taken this interpretation lightly. I really hope that was what the writers intended, anyway.
This was the thought I had, as well.... It seemed to me that the heavier woman being so confident in her skin gave Charlotte permission to be comfortable in hers.. What I absolutely hate, though, is the fillers Charlotte is injecting onto her face.. Wish she wouldn't do it....
Yes but It's a bit... stereotypical and condescending on both of them. Plus It's not like a larger girl doesnt know how to dress. The galerist flashing her stomach around, completely oblivious? Unlikely
Charlotte was so fixated on her appearance, esp in the past, at the gallery. Now she sees a confident woman who has her own swag and she realizes she can do it too. It's not toxic. Charlotte realizes she doesn't have to be put in a box.
Are they going to tackle all the horrific looking stuff Kristin Davis has done to her face, or are we supposed to continue to pretend she looks normal...
if back in the day, this is the moment where Carrie Voice over come in : and just like that, Charlotte find her confidence the moment she see the fat gallery owner. they can't have voice over like that anymore XD
that's literally what happened. Charlotte saw someone fatter than her and she stopped feeling insecure. Lmao... I was surprised this scene was there because the show bends over backwards trying to be so woke and perfect.
This was just done poorly. Charlotte only feels better concerning her body image when she sees the overweight gallery owner, who is clearly proud, successful, and confident - ugh! All this does is perpetuate the constant critical comparisons that women make toward one another. If you only feel good about yourself in comparison to a woman who is something you don't want to be, you are not tackling your self-esteem/body image issues. This was just lazy writing.
It’s true…I’ve been the bigger woman in that friend group. Now that I’m average, I noticed that amongst my thinner friends. Brutally honest it happens a lot.
Birds of a feather- If all you saw when that exuberant woman descended the stairs was “sad fat lady,” then yes, your friend group is probably filled with the sort of sad boring people who need to belittle others to feel good.
This is horribly lazy writing. Yes it's true that women compare themselves to other women. But to write it so vapidly, so obviously only about the difference between them in looks is awful. It so easily could have been done leaving Charlotte as still the heaviest (not that she is actually heavy), but showing how her style, experience, maturity, and personality along with her amazing looks reinforces that she is in fact beautiful. Simply comparing her to someone heavier, regardless of whether that woman is self confident or not, makes the message pathetic. It should have been a montage of her first week, all her experiences, her outfits, her knowledge, her confidence building, then showing her deciding to leave the skims thing at home realizing she doesn't need it to be the best version of herself because she already is that without it.
I think it would have been fine if she had been plus sized, but was also just as fabulous. Whenever I see Barbie Ferrera I get sooo jealous, but I think if she doesn't let her weight stop her whats stopping me. I think it would have come off a lot better if Charlotte had made it clear that she thought the plus-sized girl looks really beautiful.
This is a horrible message to send out to girls and women 😢 ugh i hate this reboot with a passion - i only watched this scene because people kept saying it was getting better but nope 😓
No knocking plastic surgery but I feel like many actresses, like Kristin Davis, all have this similar weird look. Is it too much surgery or the camera angels that make them look strange? Like many actors/actresses have been getting plastic surgery for years and years, however I feel like they all have this strange look now.
Seeing someone bigger then her helped her feel more comfortable being in her own skin. We all feel insecure at times, seeing someone else embrace the 'imperfections', we believe we have, can help. She walked in, with 3 pairs of spanx on feeling self conscious, happy she saw another woman embracing her weight and decided to do the same!!!
Charlotte compared her self to the overweight heifer and said if SHE can be confident looking like THAT I have no reason to be conscious... y'all women be toxic AF....
So I struggled with an eating disorder for all my teen years & most of my early 20s & my mother, who I adore, had major body issues that she's never overcome, that she pressed on her daughters as well. I was too underweight to even donate blood. I ended up in hospital on at least 3 different occasions. I was put in therapy for years, which didn't work. It was only after moving out from home & to a city that my attitude towards food changed & I absolutely chalk it up to the example of the women I found myself living with. Especially one woman named Jo, who was the most beautiful, funny, popular, easy-going woman I'd ever met. She wasn't even overweight, just a happy, wise woman with super healthy body confidence. She was absolutely unapologetic about her body - she'd laugh about her bikini rolls, she'd confidently pluck a hair from her chin, she'd giggle about a zit while eating a slice of greasy pizza, she'd joke about getting sweaty arm pits after running. She was just so... HERSELF. & there wasn't anything about her body she acted ashamed about - or even super aware of. She was always positive about other women, I don't think I EVER heard her put down another woman - especially nothing to do with their appearance. We all adored her. We all wanted to be her. Everyone was low-key in love with her. She was just absolutely neutral about her body, & just here to enjoy her life. She focused on all the things she could do with it. She was the first one on the dance floor, she was the first one to skinny dip, she wasn't scared to try new things even if she wasn't great at them. She influenced me so much. Her example of being happy & neutral about her body unpacked my lifetime of body shame in a way I never imagined. I'm almost 40 & have a healthy relationship with food & my body. It's been at least 10 years since I even weighed myself. Just having people show you how freeing it can be to like & accept yourself is honestly, so so so impactful. Jo changed my life. Even though we live in different countries now I still think about her example all the time.
I adore this - I'm so happy this amazing person helped you so much, and good on you for being so open to her influence for the better. Body positivity saves lives - it's the thought of women and young girls hating themselves to the point of self harm/hate that makes me sick to my core and loathe the diet industry and the pervasive culture of shame in society. This is why I immediately shut off when I hear a fat joke or somebody telling me I'm going to die young because I'm overweight blah fucking blah. It's people like your friend (and yourself, influencing others now) who make the world a better place, not the fatphobes. Love > Shame.
Thank you for your beautiful comment. I am surrounded by women sisters, friends, aunts who are so self conscious about their body. I have developed body image issues I didn't have before. Being around them makes me lose my confidence. I realized I should stop association with negative thoughts even if they are friends and family
@@mitnalavani7613 It's such a challenge, but as you say you need to do everything in your power to stay mentally healthy and not be ruled by shame. There is nothing more liberating than that in my opinion, and exempting yourself from the self critical language so many people seem to speak. The body shaming/woman shaming push back might feel overwhelming at times, but just because this toxic way of thinking is seemingly the defective thought process of a wide majority, doesn't mean it's right. So if you have to separate yourself from the people who perpetuate this delusion, do so. Hopefully one day you can be in a place where you can still be around these people and not have their influence, whether intended or not, effect you at all.
It is a pitty that Kristin Davis has done so many cosmetic interventions. There are so many examples of people aging beautyfully and with pride. She isn‘t one of them. She looks like a porselain doll.
I do not like this series but I really liked this episode. The gallery owner is beautiful and comfortable in her own skin; this helps Charlotte be herself too and learn that a bit of tummy is not a bad thing. I often think about this when I'm panicking over what to wear.
Seeing all these comments with a (body) positive take on this clip makes me realize how we only see what we expect to see. As for me, I took for granted that Charlotte thought and felt what she would have in the '90s. But what do I know, I have no context. There's also a chance the scene is purposely ambiguous to target a wide audience.

She has an open loving vibe- nothing physical involved. People respond to friendliness and positivity.

I bet you aren't a fat girl, and just say that. This is a fatphobic scene, regardless.

This is sadly why so many women support bigger woman and have one in their friend group. Shes there to make them feel and look better.

This is a show for and about 50 year old women, you don't need to teach them anything at that age, you can just have fun and make jokes
