  • It finally happened. The Rust around the fenders has gotten so bad that I decided to go the easy route and throw on some fender flares. This is "A" Way to do this. Mileage may vary! Like all vehicle projects, you will never really know how bad it is till you get in there. This is a work truck and I'm just going for the "20 yarder"! I did some work to slow down the decay and it should hold it back for a few more years. If time and money were not a concern, I would of either done all the metal work or possibly replaced the front fenders all together.
Flares: Just grabbed a cheap set of Ebay.

I have a similar truck so I was looking for videos to basically do the same thing. And I just wanna throw this in the middle. I have one of the roughest days ever never related to the truck. I ran across this video and I laughed so hard. My stomach hurt. I had tears in my eyes. keep making videos. I will follow like all of them carefree living life to the fullest thanks man.

My 93 paint didn't hold up as well as that one. My hood and roof paint is gone. I had a clear coat sprayed on the roof and have absolutely zero rust anywhere else.

you must live in the south. :) Minus the frame this had zero rust when I got it. I actually think this truck was in a flood, at least based on the Rear pinion bearing race that had bearing rust marks embedded in it. I actually was so impressed it sits on my desk to this day:)

You need a "Tetanus Jingle" to queue up when yanking on rust.

I think I'll start the screws in the fender before putting it on.

That's "A" way to do it. I just wasn't really sure where they would line up. These flares actually have Holes pre-drilled for the screws, but they come nowhere near the actual metal. I was shooting from the hip.

Why not just replace the front fenders?

I didn't want to paint them. OEM (New Old Stock) would be the best way but cost a fortune if I could find them. Aftermarket ones are sometimes Ok, sometimes not, and can be a lot of hassle. A used one same color would be faded and probably not match at all, and if I end up replacing the fender, I'd have to paint the fender and blend to the hood and door. I pretty much took the easiest path... Well, almost easiest, I could have just picked up a pair with the screws all the way around and bolted those on without doing any clean up on the existing fender. If this was a restoration project, I probably would have just bought front fenders, actually I would have started with a different truck from somewhere that wasn't in the Rust Belt.

Before you get involved, you should look a little lower. GM
trucks are notorious for having rusted all the way thru frame rails.
It is so prevalent, I dont know how they stay in business.
