The VME PLA is set as INDFOR so they can fight Russia as well. As for the mod itself, it’s buggy and the vehicles are horribly unbalanced. If you need PLA armored vehicles, I 100% recommend the PLA Armored Vehicles pack as it adds very high quality PLA tanks, helicopters, and APCs that are balanced a lot better and are of much higher fidelity.

    • @Viper1Zero

@@Viper1Zero Unfortunately, it does not come with any aircraft outside of a couple unarmed transport helicopters. However it has armored vehicles in abundance and they are of pretty good quality, compared to VME at least. The VME PLA mod was actually originally created by a Chinese mod team and handed down to Pookie. A lot of the balance issues might stem from propaganda or just plain inexperience and not having any reference to go off of. Now that the mod is in the hands of an experienced creator like Pookie, I do hope that he makes the necessary balance changes in future updates, as VME is the best PLA mod on the workshop in terms of sheer content.

I know this series is for mods but shout out to the Global Mobilisation CDLC. I know with it being paid you expect quality, but I really believe that it’s worth the money if the period is one you’re into. I’ve been really into the Cold War era lately and GM combined with the CWR mods (and a few others like ace of course) are really scratching an itch. I love how beautifully the models are textured, and I believe the ‘Object Specify’ and vehicle customisation for aesthetics is very under appreciated. The sexy Leopard 1 is present, with some cool supporting IFVs. Not only that, but the bridge-laying tank is worth the price of the whole CDLC 😂. Also big up CWR for bringing the Challenger 1 and Chieftan to Arma to represent the Brits. Although the models themselves aren’t amazing looking, combined with GM, Spearpoint Alpha and S&S, I’ve been able to create some fun and intense NATO scenarios in a ‘cold war gone hot’ situation, with the UK, US, and West Germany!

  • @Claude-Eckel

6:51 You wish. But nope, it is not. The U.S. also don't have the cutting edge in armoured warfare, as we, the Germans, regularly beat the M1 crews in shooting competitions (CAT and SETC), at least as far as I can think back.
Besides of that, also the M1 uses the Leo 2's Rheinmetall licensed cannon Rh120, and you know why? Because they loved our caseless and most powerful ammo so much. But since the U.S. love their radioactive radiant uranium even more, they shoot with depleted uranium KE-penetrators, and that's yet harder than our tungsten alloy penetrators.
And finally, the M1 is also full of uranium in other respects, because its composite armour also consists, not exclusively, but also of depleted uranium. The exact composition of the composite armours of the M1 and Leo 2 are top secret, but specialised press published what was declassified about the earlier Leo 2 A1-3's armours which was partially stronger than the armour of contemporary tanks. From there it didn't take too much to imagine what the armour is comprised of today and what it is capable of. We've seen it in Afghanistan when they drove over mines and the crews survived, injured though, but survived. Ever since the future Leo batches and Leos already in service were armoured up even more and made particularly safer against explosives from underneath, like IEDs and mines, and eventually also broke the 60t-barrier in return , which meant an increase in mobility, agility, range, speed, you name it.
I kind of pity your Abrams crews to have to drive around in this radioactive radiating M1, maybe that's why they are not that good at competing against their allies? May make them tired all this uranium in front of them and behind? Or it's brain cancerous and decreases their reaction time and concentration ability? I just kid. The Leopard 2 is better, or its crews are better trained, or, heaven forbid, both. The weapon system is one thing, the crew that operates it is key. Like Michael Schumacher could eventually scoop several world championships back to back with not so cutting edge cars, so could Germany beat, and still beats, the U.S. with both the Leopard 1 or 2. Just as we see fit. There you go. The exact placements per year and MBT are further down below.
The M1 and the Leo once used the same laser module too and the same thermal imaging module by Texas Instruments, that mighty modules which I as a former Leopard 2 Dep. CDR and gunner used the most as my main observation and targeting device. It is used whether it's day or night, come rain or shine, it's just better at night, but it's also mandatory during the day, as no one can hide from it unless they've already buried themselves six foot under, which would be fine with me. Either way, they make no trouble no more.
But whereas I had a maximum magnification of 12x available, now they can choose between 4x, 12x and 24x (in words: twenty-four). That's also why the U.S. don't have an edge in detecting targets, at best a draw. No, quite the opposite, because you and the Russians are the few if not the only two still using gas turbines! I almost forgot. Your M1 glows like a sun on treads in my TIM and could still be seen from the moon that way, while the Leopard 2 since version A7 has finally got a standard autonomous aircon powered by its own generator (that's the novelty), what they had learned would be vital during their during their combat missions in Afghanistan, where it can be extremely hot, followed by very cold. With the earlier versions, like mine, you had to run the main engine at idle to cool the Leo inside, which made it in return hot and glowing from the outside. So you could choose between dying from cold or being shot at and hit. Have your pick. This new aircon-system is also supposed to make the Leo 2 even more capable in all climate zones around the world. Now you can cool the whole tank yet more down because the engine can stay off when he's taken up his position and is observing the wide, wide areas he can cover with his TIM, which makes it even harder to detect him than ever before, while he is already staring at you. And one wrong move, if you only blink, he can shoot your blinking eye off with his tremendously precise fire-control system, which measures at 9,999m with a precision of +/- 10m. U.S. license.
Now, what do you want to shoot at with your harder, depleted uranium penetrators, if you can't see it in the first place? Or if you're seen from waaaayy further out and got hit already? My average was 10 s from detecting to hit the target. I've fired 89 shots during my service time under all technical conditions of this tank. No misses, one shot destructions only. Hence expect to get shot at and hit 6 times per minute. On a bad day, like when the turret is half down. Or half up, is in the eye of the beholder. Otherwise expect to get hit 10x/min. No tank survives this. Plus, the U.S. are not the only nation that utilises our Rh120 cannon in order to fire our ammunition, so... no cutting edge here for many other NATO member states either.
But, to finally wrap it up, we have asked ourselves this question a lot as well, like who would win when the shit hits the fan, which MBT would you like to operate and be in, when your commander calmly says: _"Zug, 10 Uhr, 2.300 m, Kampfpanzer! Erkannt?"_ and the gunner calmly replies: _"Erkannt."_ CDR: _"Auf erkanntes Ziel, Feuer frei!"_ Gunner: _"Ich schieße. Ach-tung! ..."_ Boom! _"Trefferblitz! Ziel. Verrrr-nichtet!"_
Every soldier gets trained (rather manipulated) to have the most trust in his weapon or weapon system. This trust needs to be build up, justifiable or not, it's crucial. There's no other weapon available, and certainly no one would willingly go and fight if he knew it's all scrap metal and not worth a dime.
Therefore I asked someone whom I though about that he might know more of it, especially other tanks of our allies, as he might have access to higher classified information than I had at the time, and this was the inventor of the famous Leopard 2 ammunition, Dr. Stefan Thießen himself. When asked what he thinks the best MBT in the world is at the moment, his answer was quite clear: there's no such thing as a best main battle tank. They all have minor up to major weaknesses and/or strengths. But if he had to chose the most versatile, agile, fast and yet highest range, well armoured, all-terrain, all-climates, NBC-protected, low-heat-profile, high ammo stock and tank capacity and thus for the longest period of time autonomously operable tank with significant, unstoppable fire power, able to punch through every known armour to date (yes, nothing stops a modern KE-penetrator, also not the Russian tanks with their oh-so many reactive armour tiles), then he had to pick, drum-roll, the Leopard 2.
There are tanks that are in parts better than the Leo 2, like the French Leclerc with the best SA due to all his electronic toys (which would fail miserably and render him almost blind after today's standards when there were radioactivity), there might be faster tanks, like the M1 with its gas turbine which accelerates better (but is gas guzzling like hell, something like 1200 l/ 100 km, more than twice as much as a Leo consumes), the Russian tanks have significantly lower profiles in height compared to all other MBTs on the planet, but that comes at a price as well, like no room in there for a crew, don't want to know how they look like after three days in this tank, then the infamous Jack-in-the-box effect, still, when they get hit it can blow the whole turret off the tank, due to their auto-loader mags in the centre of the tank, they don't even have a thermal imaging device, which reduces their night vision down to 1,300 m. When I see them at night I can fire from, say, comfy 2,500 m, twice as much as they can see, 1.5 s later they get hit and haven't even seen it coming.
The Israeli Merkava on the other hand may have the strongest armour (or the thickest, either way he's one of if not the heaviest tank), but he's made for the desert. Dry soil, sunshine, dust. End of story, um, terrain. Any other terrain, like the good old, soggy German arable soil, and the Merkava not only comes to a halt. I saw Leopard 2s throwing off a tread when turning in this kind of trappy mud. Driver's mistake, but still. It's dangerous. It ruins the whole Picnic outing. In the middle of the night. Whose job is it to get the tons heavy track back on its wheels? Teamwork is it what they call it, to get out o the warm tank into the cold air und then knee-deep mud, everything getting dirty as fuck, the apparel, the hands, the boots... oh boy... I felt them. Poor driver dude, he definitely did not make friends that night.
Now imagine you're in the middle of the Taiga. In Spring. Or nowadays maybe also during Winter, permafrost soil is said to also be a relic of the past due to the climate change. No Israeli tanks possible there. They are not only obese fair-weather tanks. In a docu I also saw the gunner blink and squint his eyes for a second when he fired a shot, because he was blinded by the muzzle flash of the gun. They have thought about everything, the believe, but forgot an Anti-glare shield to protect the gunner's eyes when he fires. Yah, hopelessly lost when he first has to get back his vision, especially at night, after he fired a shot. Unbefuckingliebvablly behind times! And what about a wrong engine, where nothing happens at -60° Celsius when you want to crank it up? That's where your gas turbine might come in handy. There may be a reason why the Russians still have it, perhaps you still have it for exactly the same reason? Anyway, the Leo 2 can not only generate energy from diesel, any fluid that burns can be used in its engine. So also vodka.

After all, the best all-rounder is the Leopard 2. And I don't say that with pride, I don't really care. I never had too high an opinion of this car (yes, we call it the car). But over the years I never had a high opinion of all the other tanks either. Especially not after seeing so many gruesome videos on WikiLeaks of tanks shot out of action in Iraq and elsewhere, watching the jack-in-the-box effect dozens of times and only imagining the gruesome deaths the crew members, obviously completely incompetent crews every time, must have died.
More and more I resented the idea of ever having to sit in that rolling coffin again and being shot in it. Barf! I'd rather be an infantryman and die a clean death if I have to, but not be locked in that metal behemoth and then shot down from ambush by something like our Milan. Btw, That was how the Turks had lost their Leopards 2 A4, they had left them standing around like artillery pieces and an unsecured rear area where the enemy could sneak up on the tanks and fall in their back or side. How incompetent are our allies when they are already using our tanks? Unbelievable. But anyway, getting back in a tank again? Thanks, but no thanks.
But if I had or were asked to, I would always opt for the Leopard 2 in its latest version. These tanks, with the appropriate capable unit leaders in front and capable crew members in them, increase the chances of survival for everyone the most, be it for the tank crews or also the infantry, with whom we had also trained in manoeuvres and supported them, for which they cheered us when we opened eventually fire when their task seemed too much for them and their pew-pew-rifles. Sigh, those were the days.
Be it as it may, taking everything into consideration and having talked to first-hand experts, the only conclusion is to many (including the manufacturer itself which advertises Leopard 2 A7 as the most modern battle tank in the world, go figure), that the leading nation in tanks is Germany rather than the US, most western nations buy our Leopard, Turkey scraps one Leopard 2 A4 after another, but the main point is:
The M1 copied many things from the Leopard 2, they are now technologically almost the same tanks, with the Abrams using the Leo's gun, not the other way round, firing its ammunition, not even being NBC proof back in 1976 during the comparative tests between the Leo 2 and the Abrams, then called the XM1, at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. The XM1 also lacked an independent periscope for the commander and the ability to go underwater. Originally, as many similar parts as possible were supposed to be used in both the Leopard 2 and the XM1, but an agreement was never reached because the US thought they were smarter, savvier or whatever - but their XM1 was already dramatically inferior to the Leopard 2, so they had nothing to offer that could be used in the Leo 2 except their laser. The signed MoU, however, in which the test conditions had been accepted, forbade any contradiction when the U.S. officially assessed that the XM1 was superior. lul That's how they manipulate their public, you see? They can't afford your soldiers lose their "trust" in their oh so superior tank. Conclusion? The leader in tank warfare does not copy from the second or third or whomever (or licenses his technologies), but vice versa, which makes the other the leader in cutting-edge technology.
The U.S. then decided against our 120-mm smoothbore gun, preferring to stick with its British-derived 105-mm M68 train gun, a variant of the British Royal Ordnance L7 that had also been used in the M48 or Leopard 1. While the Germans continued to develop, the U.S. stuck to their tried and true. It would take until 1985 to convince themselves of the opposite, when they eventually gave up on their outdated rifled tank gun. Not the quickest on the uptake, one might think. They took over the German tracks in the 70s as well as the ammunition mounts of the Leo 2. As you may see, the two tanks shared a lots similarities, the M1 still a bit behind the Leopard 2, until he became the M1A1 with our canon and got upgraded further, but so got the Leopard 2 A4. And this pretty quickly.
From A5, that was an easy up-armouring with minor but crucial improvements, with the commander finally getting his own TIM - Gosh, even we rookies couldn't believe that a commander of a battle tank had to use the gunner's TIM and was still not in full command, as the gunner commands the TIM alone - actually called WBG. Additionally the Leo 2 A5 comes with a rear view camera, probably for fair-weather-shopping tours to the super market for the Cmdr's wife, who knows what else this BS was good for, and an electro-pneumatic sliding hatch for the driver, Kevlar spall liner on the inside of the turret, armoured hub covers for the track rollers, installation of GPS and an inertial navigation system as well as preparation for the L/55 smoothbore gun.
The A6 got a new canon, the longer L/55, new ammo type, but above all: mine protection systems of all kind and sorts. The A7 finally got yet more ammo types, the said combat compartment cooling system MKK6 with an APU (like in airliners), a Barracuda Camouflage System with Heat Transfer System (SAAB BARRACUDA MCS with HTR CoolCam), command and information system, on-board network optimisation with UltraCaps, a digital on-board communication system of the type SOTAS-IP as well as a renewal of the fire extinguishing system in the fighting compartment and the retrofitting of the Attica thermal imaging module in the commander's optics - in other words, no more Texas Instruments in the Leopard 2, but they were already replaced by OPHELIOS in 2000. Stronger armour was added once more on its sides, and the weapon system is now adapted for firing HE ammunition, plus a variant of the A7 is specialised for urban warfare. With the foldable 50 centimetre high deep wading shaft, the Leo 2 has a deep wading capability of 2.25 metres; a three-part rigid underwater drive shaft makes it submersible to a water depth of 4 m. The Leopard 2 has still the best range of 500 km, the heaviest version of 450 km, which is unmatched also considering his unmatched speed at full combat readiness at a speed of way over 70 km/h (even the manufacturer KMW claims it's

Although, 1st place in gunnery for the U.S! Hey! As the saying goes: Even a broken clock goes right twice a day? Yah, I know, who needs enemies when you have friends like this.
The year before, Germany was beaten by Austria and its A4s against Germany's A6. The USA came in 3rd place and was beaten by Germany.
In 2016, Germany won again, with the USA finishing 4th and 5th as they were also beaten by Denmark (2nd) and Poland (3rd).
And then there was this big break back. In 1991, when it was still called the Canadian Army Trophy Competition, and the USA never really performed convincingly until then, so no, other nations were better, most of them used and still use, surprise, surprise, the Leopard 1 or 2, at least when they beat Germany, like Austria or the Netherlands, when finally the Leo 2 had officially appeared on the scene.
That year, 1985, it was a close race between the Netherlands, Germany and the U.S., who beat Germany in two categories, but overall Germany still finished second and the USA third. Since then, the Leopards 2 have not let the lead out of their hands.

Hopefully we will never have to find out the hard way how good or bad our tanks really are, but they are definitely still better than those of any potential adversary, because the crews matter most, otherwise the Turkey would not have lost so many Leo2 A4s, reportedly.
