  • just a basic riff to demonstrate some basic characteristics of three amps. first is a 1982 jcm 800 2204 with original GE 6550's. second is a laney pro tube aor 50 watt with winged c el-34's. third is a 1983 marshall jcm 800 2204 with groove tube el-34's. last is an early 80's peavey butcher with sovtek 6l6's. all amps go through a early 90's peavey slant cab with worn in sheffield 5150's. amp settings are what i think sound well in the room. bass 4, mids 2 and highs 4. presence on middle. pre gain is 8.5 and master on 2.5. played with a 1984 gibson explorer with dirty finger pickups

I am the original owner of a late 80's Butcher half stack and I will never get rid of it! For me it was the sound I was seeking and the Marshall just didn't do it for me. Great comparison by the way. Thanks

I agree they sound about the same. I own the butcher and run it in a 2x15 peavey cab. With JBL e-130s. It cranks and sounds good in a bar scene get good feedback and sustain but I rarely use it anymore just cannot turn it up where I live,so I use a combo carvin 100 watt solid state now at home .The old butcher just needs turned up to get the sound in my opinion.I will not sell it though. I got the butcher about 20 years ago to replace the standard I bought with cab.probably 30 years ago.I can't recall but I believe the butcher was about 300 or so used in 1992 ? Getting too old to pack a big amp ---but I still want a Marshall stack !!! Rock on

Iv been doing allot of research on the butcher and it looks to me that its only 4 resistors swaps away from being really close to a jcm on the pre board.

There's not a great deal of difference there. Just goes to show how close these amps are and how you can get that modded British sound much cheaper than paying the over inflated price for a original '800. I don't know how much Butchers go for but I've seen AOR50s and AOR100s for well under US$400. And that's for a British built, semi-point to point valve amp that factory has the sort of mods you have to have done aftermarket on an '800. Hard to argue with.
