  • I have had mental health struggles over the years, and have found photography to be the catalyst to enabling me to find a place of peace, which has helped me process the mental trauma from difficult events in my life. The video speaks to that process and wonders how photography can be a force for good in our minds. It's really important to be honest about our mental health, and seek help when we have times of difficulties.

One of the factors in predicting older folks living longer is - do they have a sense of purpose? Those with purpose tend to live longer. Pursuing photography in your 70's, 80's, 90's if actively pursued provides that purpose. Photography is good for us. PS: I am 76. I take my gear out everyday, but in the end only shoot a couple of times a week.

with photography is one does usually not even try to capture something fully, instead one wants to show how it looks when photographed in a certain way.

Thank you for sharing your thought, and opening your soul to us. Being in the landscape and taking photographs is a very personal, intimate embrace of life. I can feel it when taking the photo, and I feel it again when editing it later.
For me, it's a means of putting the pieces of myself back together when I lost myself.

Hi Chris..I work in mental health counselling and addictions. Photography has helped me cope with that A that job and my own. 8 years ago my marriage finished and I was broken and even though I was a counsellor i was at rock bottom. I started to walk and take photos again. 8 years later I'm healed and my images speak of piece and serenity. I'm now teaching photography to people affected by trauma ..yes a trauma informed approach to photography lessons. I have 2 classes and it's wonderful to see people healing from thier trauma. Great video. I often day to clients that you can't think your way to better to a better life. You have to do something ...doing therapy beats talk based therapy and I'm talk based therapist that says to my clients ..join a club...exercise ...and so on..thanks for highlighting it

I don't know if I'd classify my issues as mental health but too a degree, I suppose. I don't suffer PTSD or anything but my new job is sucking the life out of me. It's the only job in over 30 years that makes me physically ill at the thought of starting the day. Photography is my escape. It's the only time I don't fight thoughts of work creeping into my head. Laying in bed, sitting on the couch trying to relax. These don't stop the thoughts. But photography clears my head.

Thank you Chris for your very honest discussion on this important subject. When I came back to photography a few years ago I had no idea of how important it would become to my mental health. You describe very well how photography draws us into the moment where there is mental and spiritual healing. From going out two or three times a week I have now started to go out every morning with my camera and just one lens. Even if I just take one photo the process of walking, observing, being in the moment brings me peace and contentment and sets me up for the day.
Thank you for reminding me to be grateful for what I have found in photography.

Photography and sailing is something that always helped me in bad times. It just took me in a different world making me concentrate in something I really love and go over the bad days. Plus that both help me constantly slow down in the crazy speedy world we live in where everyone wants things to move fast... I want them to slow down. My days are a lot longer and pleasant now. Good video and good thinking talking about this.

Thanks Chris, I don’t suffer from any significant mental health issues but at 78 years old it does enter my mind that I don’t have a lot of time left. I’m going in for my third back surgery in a couple of days and walking on a level surface is not pleasant but there was snow a few days ago and I wanted to to take some photos along a mountain stream with some snow in the scene, knowing that I wouldn’t have another chance until next winter. So I went for a drive and a short hike. It wasn’t that easy and I didn’t get any great pictures but being in nature with my camera handy was so relaxing knowing what was coming up in a few days. Just being there along the flowing water was enough. I know I could go for a hike without a camera but what if there was something special and no camera? How disappointing. I’ve been taking pictures for 65 years and sometimes reminisce about the times when I missed a chance at a great photograph because I didn’t have a camera. The experience of it all is good for anyone’s mental health. Thank you for sharing and all the best for the good times ahead.

I thought I was the only one using photography to help me, but I took an in-person bw film class last year, and realized that many of us in the class have anxiety and depression. Actually, the professor even addressed it. I am hoping the photography department as a whole will realize the extended reasons why many of us are there, and try to provide more support. Just talking about it, like you are in this video, is really helpful. Thank you.

Just taking a walk in the woods by itself is healing, but combining photography takes it to another level. It makes you be observant and appreciative of the environment around you. One thing that it doesn't really help for me, is the notion of being paid to do it. But, I don't really care. For me it's my hobby.

    • @ChrisOrange
      @ChrisOrange  3 місяці тому +1

Thanks Charlie - for me, when I'm getting paid to be on a shoot I'm far most focussed on the clients needs, as that's why I'm there. If it's the right environment, there still can be some mindfulness, but it's generally when I'm on my own, shooting landscapes that I find the most peace.

I've been following your videos for quite a while now. I like your straight talk and honesty. When I was young, I and my brother and friends would play on old WWII structures: pillboxes, bunkers, and fox holes, that were built to repel the Japanese from Alaska. Hi Chris: Thanks for creating and sharing this video. I couldn't agree with you more. During my formative years and during my adult working years, I would not have considered myself as a particularly creative person. However, photography has allowed me to develop that side of my personality. I am an introvert by nature, and photography allows me to feel things that I haven't felt since my child-hood. Keep up bringing this important subject to your channel. Keep well. . . . Cheers, Keith (Canada)

I have always felt connected to you Chris and wasn’t sure why. This video has given me the reason why there is a connection. I have also struggled with mental health issues most of my life. It wasn’t until recently that I began the process of healing and through the struggle I have realized what photography has meant to me was exactly what you said, being in the moment, focusing on the present, being at peace. I realized that when I recently began to spiral, that one big thing that was missing was I had not been photographing much of anything in a long time, since COVID really. As I slowly get back to a normal rhythm of life, that is slowly changing and I am starting to get back to my photographic healing. Thanks for this video, it meant so much to me.

In 2004 I had a sabbatical during which I explored Photography as a spiritual practice - mindfulness etc. It can certainly help to focus your attention on the present. It also caused me anxiety and frustration as I couldn’t get the images I had in mind. That said, looking back at them now I know where I went wrong… I was too concerned with getting the finished product instead of the process of mindfulness in photography.

Hearing you loud & clear Chris. I've had struggles myself and the only thing that kept me from tipping over the edge was landscape photography, for me personally it is the best medicine that NO head doctor will prescribe.
The therapeutic benefits of an early pre-dawn shoot does wonders for not just the soul but invigorates the mind. I shiver at the thought of where I would be mentally if I didn't have this special passion in my life.
It is hard to put into words, just being at one with nature whether it be in a photographic sense or walking in a beautiful forest or beach is a miracle cure that NO pill nor drug can replicate.

A really useful and positive video Chis and something that anyone can draw from.
The pursuit and practice of photography offer numerous benefits for one's outlook, positivity, and overall mental health. Through photography, individuals cultivate mindfulness and attentiveness to the present moment, as you mention, fostering a deeper appreciation for their surroundings. Engaging with photography encourages creativity and self-expression, providing an outlet for emotions, thoughts and ideas. Moreover, capturing moments through the lens allows individuals to focus on beauty, even in the midst of challenges, promoting a more optimistic perspective.
Additionally, sharing photographs can foster connections with others, creating a sense of community and support, and maybe even new friendships.
Overall, the act of photography empowers individuals to find joy in the everyday, enhancing their well-being and outlook on life. I think it offers so many positive benefits, it truly is a wonderful, and powerful, thing, IMHO.

thanks for your kind comment. I agree with you, photography seems to open a window into our lives that enables us to find a healthier sense of well-being and peace. It's very encouraging to see how many others have found the same to be true. 😊

I don't or at least i think i don't struggle with mental health issues but going out on my own with a camera is somehow very calming and focuses the mind, looking and seeing the world from a different view point, any worries dissappear, i doesn't matter if I've taken a good photo so i can see where you are coming from, i hope ive said that in a right way as i find it hard to say in type as opposed to the spoken word but thankyou for sharing

thanks for the comment. You're right, the process is what counts. Being out and focussing on something outside of ourselves is a powerful thing in itself.

Hello again Chris ... it's good to talk!
Interesting that you find photography so therapeutic.
I find photography quite solitary. Even discussing my images I find difficult. I think I don't even like looking at old photographs that I've taken over many decades. The people I've known & loved, and places I've spent many happy hours, pear out to me, frozen in time!
I do agree that being out, just taking photos, can be an enervating experience. The intellectual challenge of taking a perfectly exposed and in focus image ... one that when looked at, doesn't want to make you say ...mah, do what!
It's often easier to talk about the camera equipment, the settings used, and how the results could be enhanced, if I just owned, that one special new bit of equipment, risks becoming enveloped in "GAS"?
Sitting at home, after a photo shoot, pouring over a computer screen, trying to make the imperfect, perfect or the merely average good is soul destroying.
Yes I agree, capturing the moment, living the experience of taking the photograph - is what for me makes photography special and if it can lift & brighten the soul, then that's surely all that matters? John G.

    • @ChrisOrange
      @ChrisOrange  3 місяці тому

Thanks for your comment John - that’s very honest of you. I think that the process should be enjoyable, regardless of the outcome photographically. Digital photography has made us think that ‘perfect’ should be what we aim for, when actually we just need to capture moments, even the imperfect ones. Getting out and walking, being in the natural environment is my first aim, and capturing it is a bonus 👏

Chris - from a fellow Christian who lives with depression - you have my prayers. The living in the present/mindful side of photography is certainly helpful to me in contrast to a tendency I have towards future-oriented anxieties.

Thanks so much! So glad photography has been helpful to you on your journey too - I feel like we need to prescribe it to ourselves as a daily way of making sure we get out into nature and walk - that in itself is so good for my soul. 😊

I have been traumatized since my early childhood by my father who is a full on narcissist who thinks he is godlike. I was scared of him because of his choleric tantrums, his threatening and all the bad stuff.
I am now 50 but I struggled all my life and I am tired. I am tired of struggling, being sad. I am tired of my life.
I was quite stable for a long period but the last years were really bad for me. When freedom was diminished, fascistoid tendencies were evolving and me and others was discriminated and scapegoated.
In that time I lost nearly all my passions, also photography.
But now I am on a journey through south of France in my camper van with my little dog, which came to me 2021 in Portugal when I had to flee from the madness in Germany. And I enjoy the beauty here and taking pictures of it with my Fuji gear (X-E2 and X-T3).
My father himself is highly traumatized. He is born 1942 and his parents were killed in Operation Gomorrah when British and Americans set 60% of the houses in fire in which civilians were living.
Of course this didn't help at all defeating Hitler's gang. Later they admitted they did it for 'demoralizing the population'. 37.000 humans killed, among them my father's parents. So my father was an orphan. An aunt took care of him and searched for a couple who would adopt him. This took years, she tried this couple and another one. In the end he was adopted by the man who I acquainted as my grandfather. He was an soldier in Hitler's army, in Russian prisonship. I don't know, but probably he did and saw horrible things. He was the man who 'educated' my father.
Btw: Do you know that Hitler was brought into power by the USA? He was supported from early on. Without American money by American banks (Grandfather Bush) and products by American companies Hitler wouldn't have been able to do what he did. Germany was bankrupt after WW l.
They were scared that Germany would become communist (Marx and Engels were Germans). And they wanted him to beat up the Russians (what he did). Americans love Nazis because they share the same enemy: Communists and Russians. They even planned to defeat Russia just after the with German troops which they left under weapons. They hang a handful of Nazis in Nuremberg but all the others they could profit from they took to the US in Operation Paperclip. E.g. Wernher von Braun was German and built rockets for Hitler, afterwords for NASA. And thousands more.
That Americans live Nazis you can see as well now in Ukraine. They brought them into power after the Maidan shootings. Why? Because they hate Russians. That was the start of the American proxy war against Russia in Ukraine. I am so sad about the hundred of thousands Ukraines who have to die for these American imperial goals.
Hopefully Germany is not sent again into a war against Russia. And we 're having world war lll.
Mankind is traumatized enough by wars which are always ignited by elites and not by the ordinary people who just want peace and a good life - everywhere in the world.
As a British: Watch the documentary by the Canadian journalist James Corbett (Corbett Report) about WWl (World war l Conspiracy). Very interesting!

Hi there, thank you so much for the time you have taken to write such a thorough comment. I’m so sorry to hear of all the traumatic experiences you have had in your life, and for your family. I certainly hope that your trip in your campervan will be so good for your mental health and will help bring some peace, as you spend time in nature soaking up all the views and sounds. Thanks again. Interesting video Chris! Like others who have commented, I appreciate your openness regarding your mental health struggles. A few years ago I suffered from a mental health breakdown as a consequence of being bullied at work. To help me switch off from the stresses I had endured, I purchased a Ricoh GRii camera at that time and would take myself off for a walk or a bike ride, stopping to take photographs along the way. I found it very relaxing to “be in the moment” and appreciate my surroundings. I especially enjoyed the process of uploading photographs and completing some basic editing, using Apple’s “Photos” software. Since I purchased my Ricoh, I added an old Canon 40D and more recently obtained an X-T1 plus a couple of lenses.
What I found with the Fuji is a camera that is well engineered, and one that is likely to “encourage” me to be more considered when taking photographs! My aim is to use a small selection of lenses, mostly for manual shooting. I’d spent a long period of time supporting my mother-in-law with her health issues before she passed away last month. It’s her funeral this Thursday coming and as difficult as things have been, I’m looking forward to Easter which in some ways will mark a new start for me in a number of ways. I want to get back to my photography in earnest and also explore a spiritual journey that I’m on.
Keep it going Chris with your videos and I hope you can periodically include some comments about your progress on both mental wellbeing and your own spiritual journey☺️

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to comment on your journey. I'm really sorry you had those struggles in your working environment - but I'm so glad to hear that photography has helped you to move forward from those experiences. I hope the funeral goes well this week, and that Easter gives you some space to get out and capture some new images. I'll be sure to keep talking about this subject, as it's so important. Thanks! Chris

Photography is an escape and distraction for many with mental health issues, including myself. As already mentioned, we need or even thrive on having a sense of purpose in life, without we flounder and struggle.
I became a 'Mental health first aider' recently for the comany I work for here in the UK. It's taught me allot about myself and how I can help others. Photography is a wonderful tonic for mental illness, but don't suffer alone eh?! Remember, there are people out there to talk and who'll listen 😊

I just turned 72 Chris and have battled all the things you refer too. I'd been on pills and potions for the last 50 years but a year ago everything changed for me. What changed me? Two things........Ren and Carnivore. Ren is a young man who is producing some of the best musical artwork I have ever heard, and Carnivore refers to the Carnivore diet. Do yourself a favor and put ''Hi Ren'' in the UA-cam search engine, sit back, watch and listen. You will not regret it.
