I'm pretty anxious when it comes to anything health / Doctor related and once again, with a lot of my procedures, tests, etc., it was a piece of cake. I would have to say the most annoying part of the test is the "deep breath in, exhale hard until your lungs are emptied and keep trying to empty them while they're already empty for five seconds" portion. It could lead to some light headed-ness, but just tell the Nurse and she'll give you a break. Don't worry about getting this done! :)

I’m pretty anxious about taking this test. I was in the hospital for 5 months on ECMO due to severe covid in 2021. The virus damaged my lungs and just watching this video and what’s required to do activated my anxiety lol. I have a hard time breathing and I just hope I don’t end up coughing really hard from not catching my breath on time.
I did this a few months ago for the second time. I just felt my lungs weren't right. I blew out about 6 times. I wasnt biting down on the little tube thing when i blasted out my air. I gave it everything i got. I emptied my lungs out in 8-10 seconds. I pushed it to the limit for sure. I got my results back and they said my lungs were normal. Its crazy because every time i think something is wrong with me my results are normal. Im happy they all were but its always crazy to me. I do however think i suffer from panic attacks. Thanks for the video ❤

Pulmonologists use the test to measure the capacity of your lungs. Everyone’s lungs are different, so your test administrator will use multiple factors (age, weight, gender, race, etc.) to develop reference numbers and identify an appropriate range based on your characteristics. Ideally, a normal range is 70-80% or above your predicted reference number. Please follow up with your pulmonologist to receive your official results.

For some people, being enclosed in a pod like this can cause anxiety even though they can see through the walls. It can also cause anxiety for some to try to breath out while the machine to offering resistance. Different people fond different experiences uncomfortable. Ps. I just had one last week and I was fine.
Is there a test that measures the strength of each lung separately? I feel that my right lung disfunction after a neck accident. How can be diagnosed if you are single lung ?
I had probably my 5th pft today. I have asthma and for the first time ever it took 8 times and evevn then it wouldnt give clear results i guess. What does that even mean? I funished the time it takes for each breath but still she said it wasnt enough. Any idea what this mean?
Why is this all done using mouth breathing? Isn’t that method inefficient and unhealthy? How can you properly measure your body’s ability to perform using suboptimal methods?
Is it okay to cough? because when I try and take a deep breath in, it hurts on the left side of my chest, and then I start to cough. I had covid in April 2021. My doctor referred me for a PFT at the hospital. Haven't had the PFT done yet. I'm a bit worried because it is so hard for me to breathe in deeply, and blowing out is about the same.
If you have to cough that will be taken into consideration I’m sure. They are very nice and patient and make sure you’re ok. Relax and feel better soon xx🙏
It is true that breathing through the nose offers many benefits, including humidification of inhaled air, filtering of dust and other particles, and improved oxygen consumption. However, when we are performing a pulmonary function test, it is better to breathe through the mouth. This is because we are testing maximum lung capacities and force - both of which are much easier to achieve through the mouth. We also need a tight seal for the tests, which is easier to achieve using a mouthpiece.
Often, the respiratory therapist uses an inhaler as a bronchodilator. It is an inhaled medication used to relax the muscles in the lungs and improve breathing.
To complete the test, facilities must have a doctor’s order. The order will determine whether you need the full or partial test. We encourage you to speak with your doctor and insurance company to determine the necessary tests and the total cost.
I just took a spirometry test about a week ago and my pulmonologist said the results were normal in the follow up I had yesterday, yet after I told them about how I used my rescue inhaler an hour before the test they said I wasn’t supposed to do that before any breathing test, and no I wasn’t told this before the procedure. Does this mean my lung function would’ve been lower than what was shown in the spirometry report?
Maybe, I have to take one and the instructions given were not to use an inhaler for 24 hours before test. Another part said 8 hours before. No cough medicine for 48 hours before. I forgot about that one but I took it was 40 hours before my test so I hope that's still ok.
Your not supposed to take it before. If needed you can take it during and that shows the difference. had probably my 5th pft today. I have asthma and for the first time ever it took 8 times and evevn then it wouldnt give clear results i guess. What does that even mean? I funished the time it takes for each breath but still she said it wasnt enough. Any idea what this mean?
@@John-jd3nr no! I mean if your are home and in the middle of night had an asthma attacked. If you take the test while feeling ok. The test results would be very different.
This test determines a baseline for a patient’s lung capacity without medication in their system. The test administrator sets the baseline results before administering a bronchodilator to decide if the medicine improves the patient’s lung capacity.
@@columbushosp some days my breathing is not as good as other days. I may not have a full blown asthma attacked but breathing is shallow Maybe because I have asthma and COPD?
It means abnormal results from pft. It usually means that you may have chest or lung disease. Some lung diseases (such as emphysema, asthma and infections) can make the lungs function abnormal for example, lungs can help in breathing but not as a healthy person well and smoothly.
Test administrators ask each patient to try their best when completing the test. The machine requires a six-second standard to receive a test reading. Suppose a patient fails a test due to the machine’s inability to capture an accurate reading. In that case, the patient will need to work with the test administrator regarding proper breath technique. If a patient failed because their test results were low, we would encourage them to work with their doctor directly.

I have bad ashrma and i want to get a waiver to enlist into the air force if i fail this test they wont let me in the military?
Going today to take one as my final obstacle to enlist into the Marine Corps, I also used to have asthma, if it comes back positive you won't be able to enlist in any branch, wish you luck
I can barely breath as it is so I don't know how the heck I'm supposed to do this test without having major problems and possibly passing out. Not looking forward to it.
How did your test go? Did you have difficulty? If so, how did they handle it?
@@alouise3557 Hi! my test went better than I thought it would. It really wasn't that bad. I had one years ago that left me feeling faint and completely breathless so that is why I was afraid. I don't know why this recent test seemed shorter and easier. It helped that the folks there were really nice. I explained to them ahead of time that I was really short of breath that day and expressed my concerns to them. I think that really helped me as well
can kids take this test?
I just had this done in Germany but no one ask if you have anxiety in the box get you butt in there and breathe in and out and finito, but wha is a good or normal level of oxygen exhaled? He said you are normal, but give me the steroid to take once a day.
What does it look like if someone has COPD?
Thank you!
The test itself is easy u do get lightheaded on a few of the test and then doing the breathing treatment you can feel like poop 💩 I got a headache and a stomach ache from all this
Oh noooo i have this test in an hour im terrified 😢
PLEASE! Someone tell me exactly what is terrifying about this test. I am about to have this exact test and I watched the video thinking..... OK, I GOT THIS, I JUST NEED TO BREATHE What am I missing? Please tell me.
Nothing really, last time i had it done i just had a problem sitting in a small booth like that
For some people, being enclosed in a pod like this can cause anxiety even though they can see through the walls.

I am coughing after I got sick, should I take the test or reschedule
I had probably my 5th pft today. I have asthma and for the first time ever it took 8 times and evevn then it wouldnt give clear results i guess. What does that even mean? I funished the time it takes for each breath but still she said it wasnt enough. Any idea what this mean?
Why is this all done using mouth breathing? Isn’t that method inefficient and unhealthy? How can you properly measure your body’s ability to perform using suboptimal methods?
You have to improve your technique of Spirometry.
Bo. We are sorry to hear this. Please reach back out to your doctor for further guidance.
If you have to cough that will be taken into consideration I’m sure. They are very nice and patient and make sure you’re ok. Relax and feel better soon xx🙏
Does urgent care units do this for trouble breathing
No, urgent care units do not offer this test. The tests vary by location.
Idk why others are afraid but I'm mainly afraid that I'll mess up steps
It is true that breathing through the nose offers many benefits, including humidification of inhaled air, filtering of dust and other particles, and improved oxygen consumption. However, when we are performing a pulmonary function test, it is better to breathe through the mouth. This is because we are testing maximum lung capacities and force - both of which are much easier to achieve through the mouth. We also need a tight seal for the tests, which is easier to achieve using a mouthpiece.
Do you need to run or bike in the test too?
That’s a stress test. Totally different
When I went to do this test my doctor sprayed something in my throat in the middle of the test. What was it?
@@nik144an it's pretty obvious what do you swallow, from your jokes
Albuterol . Inhaler - to open up ur lungs
@@MOBU76 thank you
Often, the respiratory therapist uses an inhaler as a bronchodilator. It is an inhaled medication used to relax the muscles in the lungs and improve breathing.
charges for this test ??

Wouldn’t the results be different if the test were
given while the person is having an asthma attack?
They would of course stop the test if tat happened
@@John-jd3nr no! I mean if your are home and
in the middle of night had an asthma attacked.
If you take the test while feeling ok.
The test results would be very different.
@@Jimfromearthoo7 Well of course...the tests show the general health of the lungs, and can often suggest asthma during the test.
This test determines a baseline for a patient’s lung capacity without medication in their system. The test administrator sets the baseline results before administering a bronchodilator to decide if the medicine improves the patient’s lung capacity.
@@columbushosp some days my breathing
is not as good as other days. I may not have a full blown
asthma attacked but breathing is shallow
Maybe because I have asthma and COPD?
Had mine today - it was awful.
Dana Petersen please explain what was horrible about this. Thank you
It was awful..had mine yesterday...
Anyone having one of these due to a paralyzed diaphragm?
Thanks alot...What does it mean if someone fails the PFT?
It means abnormal results from pft. It usually means that you may have chest or lung disease. Some lung diseases (such as emphysema, asthma and infections) can make the lungs function abnormal for example, lungs can help in breathing but not as a healthy person well and smoothly.
Test administrators ask each patient to try their best when completing the test. The machine requires a six-second standard to receive a test reading. Suppose a patient fails a test due to the machine’s inability to capture an accurate reading. In that case, the patient will need to work with the test administrator regarding proper breath technique.
If a patient failed because their test results were low, we would encourage them to work with their doctor directly.
i have this test today. idk why my dr ordered this. i don.t even smoke.
If you were recently in the hospital and had a low O2 during your sleep they order the test also if you snore or your past or present work environment
*This test is going to kill my mum. I told her to take all her puffers with her when she gets hers done. she gets out of breath just bending down*
This is a very difficult test. If there are contraindications to its implementation, then this should be taken into account.
You aren’t supposed to have caffeine or inhalers at least 6 hours before this test for accuracy
I said for after.. and I'm sure if she had an attck she would take her inhalers. last time she was in hospital her oxgen levels was down to 85%@@natashalove7016
I’m 14 and super scared to do this
I hope you are ok
Please be assured that the test is not painful and the breathing techniques are simple. Your test administrator will coach you through the test and encourage you to give your best effort.
@@columbushosp how long does the test take?

It's almost 9,000 php here in the Philippines
