I just found this by accident whilst searching through some of my old detailing podcast episodes on here. Wow I can't wait to watch this shortly. Well done in deciding to do a documentary on the industry I love and what gave me so much passion and a reason to get up every morning. I'm thirty years into detailing as a professional this year though Im now training people and doing R & D testing and I'm sure that I will learn some great things from this video despite my experience and knowledge,. life is a never ending journey of learning.
Great job on the research and production of this video Mat! You did some tremendous work here, and your efforts didn’t go unnoticed! The crazy amount of planning and all the footage you had to edit would drive most past exhaustion. And you pulled it off! 💪🏻👍🏻 Thank you for having us in this important piece of car detailing history! Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
Cheers fella... Yes, a lot of time and effort into the research and editing. But it wouldn't have been possible without you and the others guys all taking part and sharing your knowledge and experience 👍 Thank you 🙌
Remember when the BBC used to make interesting and well researched documentaries? No, me either. This knocks them out of the park. Well done and thank you
Great work Mat! I got my first car in the late 80’s and always liked to keep it clean. I had a classic MG for a few years which I took to a car show every now and then so went a bit further than just cleaning it. It was in 2006 that I discovered the Detailing World forum and learnt to machine polish which takes everything to the next level. I learnt from articles on Detailing World, would have been much easier if UA-cam detailing content was around then! Originally with a Porter Cable that I imported from the USA, then a rotary and on to long throw DA’s once they hit the scene. It was all about waxes and polymer sealants then the ceramic products started to arrive. Even so, it’s not changed that much. We’re all just keeping our car clean and shiny at the end of the day which is what it’s always been about.
What a gr8 vid! As a serious driveway detailer, there is always something to be gained by watching these videos. Evidently, the pros think so, too! All of you guys [and gals] rock. I feel that it's not only the continuous number of products constantly being introduced to the market but how they are used and all of the techniques involved - endlessly fascinating! Shine on you crazy diamonds!
Mat, thanks for your video, very interesting. At age 17, I received my first car, a 1968 Camaro Convertible and I started car care. Now some 50 years later, the car care industry has totally changed. When I first started, I used dish soap for shampoo, chamois for drying, and an old wash mitt, which I still use today on the wheels. The wax of choice was Turtle Wax in a can, and boy you had to use a lot of elbow grease to remove it. Thanks to the internet & computers and watching thousand & thousands of videos, anyone can learn today and see different products to use. Because I live in the States, I like using American made products when possible. I also like getting the most bang for the buck. Thanks again...
Absolutely fantastic, Matt!👍👍👍 As someone who started by cleaning my dad's car for pocket money back in the '80s, to cleaning my own car in the '90s and then discovering Detailing World when I first got the Internet in the '00s. This documentary you have produced, mirrors my journey and passion for detailing through the decades.👍👍👍
Fantastic job ! Lot of information provided by different detailers and brand owners give to this documentary a pretty consistent view of what we, as enthusiast or weekend warriors, are chasing for our believed cars. Everyone had his own point of view on what is working best for him, or which process is the most efficient regardless the region of the globe you are living in. That is definitely helpful when we see new brands popping up every here and there. Congrats Mat !
What a great video Mat. The effort which has gone into this must be immense! It deserves millions of views. I have no idea how UA-cam works, but I’ve not actually managed to watch it all yet. I feel I probably would have done if it had been uploaded in 20-30 minute segments. Personally my UA-cam time is limited, so I find that’s the sweet spot in video times. I am looking forward to finishing it though!
Absolutely cracking watch! Really found it interesting. Must of been one hell of a journey from start to finish. Hopefully not another 5 years till we see another one from you 😁
the simplest definition of detailing I think is "vehicle surface care" the cleaning, restoration, enhancement, protection and preservation of vehicle surfaces. using only what those surfaces need to get them clean, looking and feeling their best and protected so they stand the test of time. it's the combination of an artform and a truly skilled craft
Well done Mat on putting this together, a must watch for anyone into detailing form enthusiast to pro, new or old wanting to understand the history and what this scene is all about. I hope the future is super concentrated multi purpose products, I find it crazy how much water we are buying especially ready to use tyre cleaner, pre wash, wheel cleaner, bug remover etc. when really a good APC (or Decon shampoo) can do all of those jobs.
Cheers fella.... I think tablet form products may be a thing, but then there's the issue of not dissolving fully.... Or maybe concentrates, but then if someone over dilutes to get more for their money, they may then think the product isn't good enough, rather than blame themselves.... Tricky one
Woow this was put together so well, the sort of thing you see on TV. That's a credit to the effort you put into this and I can't even think about the time it took you to do it. I'm 9 days late to this video but glad I came across it. I can see this video doing really well over time and well done of the whole production of it 💪
Thank you. That was the idea behind the production. I wanted it to feel like it belongs on Netflix or something. Rather limiting considering I shot it all solo..... I;ve been on a couple of podcasts recently and I go into a little about the making of it.

Thanks for re igniting my interest and producing a very intersting documentary. P.s really enjoyed listening to you on the specky and paul talk detailing podcast. Keep up the great work 👍
Well done Matt, that was a really cool show. I can't even begin to know how much time and effort (let alone cost) went into that production. I do hope it gains the traction it deserves. All the best.
I remember how well Bleche White cleaned white walls. Unfortunately it's not for use woth clear coated surfaces, so that leaves only old-school chrome mag wheels or steel wheels with stainless steel hub caps.
What a great watch/listen to the industry I have been interested in since my Dad showed me how to transform a car with a bucket & sponge and dish soap in the late 60's to today where I have a wax collection worth multiple £000's and chemicals from at least !0 major brands to allow me to transform a car from daily driven to way past showroom condition in a couple of days.
I don't like coatings. I tried 3. Its a headache to use and the waterspots in this area is terrible with a coating. I rather do a light polish every year and use easy to use sealants. Rupes UNO advanced seems very promising with a top up. Runny but you can get used to it. Seems to really clogged my polishing pads however. So i ran them through a machine wash.
