  • This is the third installment on this painting. Today i'm only painting the clothes/fabric/cloth. While i am definitely no expert, i have grown to 'quite' 'enjoy' painting the folds of fabric, i think as I've practiced over the last 12 months I've realised if you break it down into just a few main colours/tones it makes it much easier to understand and therefore paint!
    The further from the face and hands i get, the more loose i will try to become. I'm hoping to do the chair and background next, extremely loosely in an almost abstract way, in one day (for part four). We'll have to see how that goes!
    Don't forget to subscribe and click the little bell icon afterwards to receive an email when i upload a video :) Also please thumbs up.
    I've spent a RIDICULOUS amount of time shooting and editing this video (an EMBARRASSING amount of time really). I'd really appreciate a comment on what you think about it. I can see the production quality of the video is much more 'professional' looking now, with some nice B-roll in there (wow i'm so pro lololol), but it takes a LOT more effort to do it. I'd really appreciate you telling me if you noticed.
    PS You may have noticed my new favourite mug near the start of the video! It's an "OpenDog" mug, and part of the merch for one of my favourite UA-camrs James Bruton. James is (i'm sure) a genuine genius, and has made an unbelievably awesome ROBOT DOG (yes that's what i said!) at home, on his own! it's incredible, please visit his channel to give it a look, deets below...

    PPS no one reads this far! I've got an update on the 'Julian burns his workshop down making a forge' video. The parts are coming in and hopefully by the end of the week i'll have enough bit'n'pieces to assemble a home-made diesel flamethrower (forge burner lol). So i might make a video about the testing of the burner. It should be exciting at least :)
    Cheers all o/

    I'm a beginner artist, so watching this video helped. I liked how you had everything drawn out and then painted in the shadows, and then the gradient. Very cool and helpful.

      Thanks David. I’m certainly no expert but keep on going and you will be.

      Since I'm still new to this, how would you paint fabric in a shirt? Like a knit style shirt?

    You did such a good job! Painting clothes is still difficult for me .^_^.

      Thanks Charle, it's not too bad if you try to reduce the number of colours involved. Try just three tones... dark, mid and light tones, it's surprisingly effective. :)

    Really enjoyed watching this Jules, you have a real talent. Loved the beginning scenes which built the setting and anticipation and it all looked very professional, so well done on the edit. Looking forward to the next instalment. 👍🏼

    I slowed much of this to .25 speed and it was still too fast. I would have enjoyed seeing at least a part at normal speed. Brilliant work, as a draughtsman even my free hand sketching is garbage. To see such skill is a joy.

    Great job! I'm looking for a video on how to paint jeans. Do you have a tutorial for this painting?

    This is exactly what I was looking for: the various blues in a shirt. It doesn't look l like you used just one blue and its values but you used some blues mixed with other colors. Is that correct?
    I am attempting to paint a dark blue baseball uniform shirt in neutral light. (A photo submitted by friend.) Quite a challenge of thinking through what do I actually see imaginatively since there are very little values in the photo. Thank you for your video. It is helpful! :)

    This is really starting to come together now. And yes, I like the editing at the start of the video. But I know what you mean, it takes ages to shoot and edit these bits. It was worth it though 😃👍

      @JulianMakes  5 років тому

      thanks David! and cheers for the comment about the edits at the start, yeah it's soo time consuming, i'm glad you think it's worth it :)

      I'm thinking of adding in some extra footage during time lapses too: wider shots, my palette, the water pot etc to break it up a bit. But yeah, I'm dreading the time it will take 🙂

    • @JulianMakes
      @JulianMakes  5 років тому

      I have found that the extra shots do eat into 'painting' time if I let them, so i "try" to do all the B-roll shots before i start painting, i once tried it in the middle and it was a temporal disaster!

      @JulianMakes  5 років тому +2

      Hi BarbArt! i used just regular decent artist grade oil paints with gamsol as a medium/thinner where needed. Glad you liked it :) i've just watched your video about being 29.999 years old - fun vid - subbed o/

    The background music is so annoying, other than that it's a great tutorial, and the photography is great. Thank you for sharing.
