Great video, thank you. I30n - no. Drove one for a weekend. Interior is so cheap and nasty, ride quality for everyday usage is too bouncy even in the softest setting, lots of road noise, suffers from far too much axle tramp, and the engine is only ok, it's an ancient unit. Good first attempt from Hyundai, and it's fun for a thrash, but not to live with everyday. Civic - awesome car, but only 4 seats and halfords boy racer looks, so no. Megane R.S Trophy - most fun I've had on a test drive, for a back road thrash it's such fun. But, that suspension, way way to hard to live with everyday, and the 1.8 unit does suffer from noticeable lag. Sport chassis Megane gets no LSD, and the engine feels lacking. Huge miss from Renault not including adjustable dampers. Please include road driving in your group test, because lets not forget, the majority of these cars won't see a track, and they'll be used for going to work, dropping kids, and occasional bumpy b road thrashes. In other words, the laptimes are irrelevant, the everyday usability and fun are what count.
Focus ST, cause its the best allrounder, its fun to drive but if you want to drive on racetracks i think the Type R is the best opinion (i dont like the design)
Car testers always so casually dismiss the interior quality on this car, crying about plastic bits, while in reality everything that is hardplastic in the focus also is hardplastic in any of it's competitors. Interior quality is pretty impressive for the segment in fact, you got leatherette covered doors, leatherette covered knee bolstering on the transmission tunnel, an amazing heated steering wheel, felted door pockets and cubby spaces and a leather armrest. An i30N has a completely hardplastic door panel and a nasty hardplastic handbrake, the golf is similar to the focus, but lacks the knee bolstering.
I don't think comparing the ST to the Type R is that helpful. The Type R is Hondas most extreme hatch, but the ST is not Ford's, that's clearly the RS. The ST is for people who want a quick sporty hatch but don't want anything too extreme in terms of styling or performance. A better comparison is the Hyundai i30 N.
yet i30 is cheaper than ford and maybe even better in performance and interior and other stuff , to be honest best deal in my opinion is or maybe was ford focus ST line 150hp , not so diffrent than 180hp , cheaper and great car overall ,i really enjoy driving it every day in my blue papa smurf car :D
@@ReeI3oK Yeah, the Hyundai may beat the Ford, particularly as its cheaper, depends on how that stacks up the the STs equipment. I just think the two cars are more comparible. What car has 180bhp?
To be fair, by looking at the specs, I think comparing the Type R to the ST is still more fair than the RS. The RS will most likely compete with the A45 and RS3 which are different beasts altogether. The Type R's numbers - price, HP and 0-60 are closer to the ST. But the things that are less obvious like handling and feel should be a league above the ST.
@@seanamor I own 150hp st line , almost same numbers as 180 but less fuel consuption so for me it's better , drives crazy good in corners and brings alot of fun , and people look at it alot :)
Good review: informative without being too technical. I have a 2017 ST and last week I had a test drive in the new model. I was impressed by new features such as rev matching and thought it sounded good from the outside as well as in the driver's seat (which still gets engine noise channelled through in a possibly misleading way). Although disappointed by the lack of all-leather seats (I like my creature comforts), I don't mind the loss of the gauges; I'm always too busy keeping the car on the road to look at them. Overall, a really good package.
Why do I see this being compared to the Type-R so frequently? They're not in the same class and don't have the same goal. The Type-R is a hyper hatch which is meant to perform on a track. The ST is being a fun normal hot hatch that's very easy to daily drive. The ST is also much cheaper, that list price is not realistic (it's a Ford, heavy discounts is just how they work) and as a result we already have German dealerships taking ST orders starting with 26k EUR when it should have started from something like 34k EUR.
Great review. Probably the best Focus ST review i've seen. I have had 5 previous model Focus ST's and have loved every one. However i do think that the new Focus ST's price tag is still a bit too high. Granted it has more kit but its never going to hold its value like an RS. It needs to shed a few £'s before i'd take the plunge.
The 80s and early 90s were the best years for hot hatches, in that you could use ALL of their performance much of the time. All cars are much more powerful now but the roads are worse in every possible way. I am old and I can remember vividly even XR2s as being a bit special. 96 bhp in 870 kg could bounce around all day. My partner, with a Golf GTI performance (only 245 PS), is stuck in traffic every day. At least my 110 bhp 2.7 tonne camper can use all of its power..... even in towns.
Haha i love that you called out the Civic for having a trash infotainment system. Not many journalists have the balls to do that. Yes the Civic and the Megane have the absolute worse infosystems on the market.
That has been one of the biggest things I have seen in almost every review about the Type r. Slow/laggy, terrible touch button with no haptic, replacement physical buttons that were not any better, not very intuitive. Honestly for a Type R civic it is pretty high tech on the inside instead of the old Honda weight saving, NVH levels of a track vehicle, simple interior designs of it's brothers.
I have one and can honestly say it is a tad slow occasionally depending on what you're trying to do (loading maps etc) but definitely not bad enough to hinder everyday life! Plus none of the reviews to date mention you can change the facia/skin of the infotainment from the admittedly dated red look to a more tablet/ipad esque look. If incould upload a pic i would.
I was the happy owner of a 2007 Focus ST, same color. Great car indeed! You said in the video that an automatic version of the 2.3 petrol will be available in August. Are you sure about that? I have asked the week before two Ford dealers when the auto version will be available and they didn’t have a clue. Do you know if it’s going to be a dual clutch? And to answer to your question, I would choose the ST. Type R is as ugly as it can be and definitely less practical. Unless someone can afford having it just for the fun of driving it in circuits!
@jim papajim -- my dealer said Aug/Sept for auto on petrol only and its not dual clutch, same 8 speed auto in regular Focus, but tweaked for ST as they understand it.
Very sad that this is not a choice here in the US now as this would be my top pick if it was available. VW Golf GTI would be at the top of my list along with the Mazda3 with the N/A 2.5L in hatch form as the Type R is another $10k on top of these choices. Gotta be a Honda. That Ford will spend more time in the dealer unfortunately.
It's really time to put this myth to rest and stop spreading misinformation: www.reliabilityindex.com/manufacturer
European Fords are quite reliable, and in the event that they fuck up (like the batch of RSes with the wrong head gasket) they seem to replace everything pro-bono.
The comparison with a Type-R is out of place anyway, that's a hyper hatch while this is a hot hatch.
I had fords for 10 years with no problems at all. before going for a Golf GTi last year and had nothing but problems with it. Going back to ford again
@@shamong121 to be fair you were probably unlucky with that GTI. Which model year was it?
Gotta get some really dark shades if you get a Type R. My god that thing is FUGLY.
Megane rs trophy!
Bounce bounce bounce. Laughably bad suspension.
Finally, a non-gay car reviewer.
