Watching this during Ramadan, where I don't eat/drink for 14 hrs, and I start work immediately after Suhoor. I work in software/ML. I am substantially more productive at work during Ramadan, both in quality and quantity. I feel my computational power gets a little boost whose impact I can actually observe, and I just have this uncanny ability to focus for a long time without frying my brain. It's quite unbelievable.

OUTSTANDING! From one Andrew to another, I feel compelled to comment, as you have described exactly what I have found. Apart from a coffee daily at 11am, I generally fast for between 18-20 hours. As a software developer, I focus fasted in the early morning 5 -10 and find the fasted state extremely productive. Optimum time is 7-8am, but with slowly diminishing returns as I head towards 11am. After coffee, my productivity is restored to my 7am level, but only for 90 mins max. After that the fasted state becomes counterproductive, whilst I can do chores or other non mental tasks, my cognition will only return to any where near to my earlier levels with a small snack, olives work for me, but only small amounts. Should i eat lunch, that's it for the day!.. Keep up the good work AH, really enjoying your professional and factual content.
Following even some of your advice has already changed my life.
Sun viewing and delaying caffeine in the morning have together allowed me to drop my caffeine intake from roughly 400mg (2 large cups of coffee, one in the AM one at around noon) to roughly 100mg, none in the morning and half as much at noon. In addition, shockingly, while my sleep onset remains the same, since starting this routine 2-3 months ago I haven't woken up randomly in the middle of the night and wake up feeling refreshed and actually good.
I do intermittent fasting such that I eat between 5pm and 9pm with 90% of the calories consumed between 5pm and 6:30pm. As a result of advice from yet another Huberman video, instead of simply increasingly portion sizes of a normal dinner meal, I instead started adding additional, normal sized portions of more variety of foods, and I feel amazing after doing so. It makes sense, though, that a massive amount of broccoli won't have the same benefits as a normal amount of broccoli, a normal amount of carrots, a normal amount of kale/arugala, and then instead of a MASSIVE bowl of blackberries, a normal bowl of blackberries, a normal bowl of peaches, an apple, and a banana.
It's all in one meal so it seems like so much more than it is. It's fascinating how easy it is to overeat, even when eating healthy, when you increase portion sizes rather than include more variety.
I could probably keep rattling off more and more ways Huberman has changed my life, and always for the better. And it's for FREE.

If you've never experienced an extended fast before you don't know what you're missing out on. I've never felt better my entire life starting at around day 4 until I broke my fast on day 12. The mental clarity, focus, and heightened senses overall is pretty mind blowing. I wish more people would try it so they can relate to what I'm talking about

@@oilinmyface787 I work in an office so it's not back breaking work, but one 7 day fast I did I was working and had two on-site interviews back to back in the northeast when I was living in Dallas. Got offers on both positions. It allows you to focus and be productive in part due to the intense boredom of not being on your normal eating schedule.
@@jhgolf25 Impressive ! Couple of years ago I did fast for 36 hours a couple of times and felt amazing. Trying to do it again but I feel dizzy and one time I did almost pass out. So something has changed, not sure what it is. Anyway, good for you and good luck !

Empathizing with the plight of the poor is not the core point of fasting (although it is a side benefit that some people might get) but the point is just to be able to control yourself for the sake of God. Ramadan is also not just about fasting, though unfortunately some people only treat it as such. Its a time to become spiritually closer to God, not just to be religious for one month then go back, but to help as a kind of reset to become better for your whole life.
also there is nothing islamic about what you call "stuffing your face in the night," it's just having a normal dinner and, some people tend to have a lot, but it doesnt make it a blanket thing to say all muslims do that.

You didn’t mention the key factor which plays a role in alertness and wakefulness - orexin. One thing fasting definitely does is it prevents the blood flow to focus on the Gastrointestinal system instead of the brain. Fasting also increases the amount of orexin in the blood which is an important factor (if not the most) for arousal, wakefulness, and regulation of appetite.

Hello Professor! I am a bit confused regarding this topic:
1- Provided you are fasting-adapted, you would have slightly more ketones in your blood right? And ketone bodies can indeed fuel some neurons and make up for the diminished glucose. And ketone bodies have been reported to increase mental focus if I am not mistaken.
2- The low glycemia would set a cascade of stress hormones (NA and A, and cortisol) because they also have an hyperglycemic effect on the blood (they raise blood sugar). So not only would blood glucose be more "stable" but also you would have enhanced focus right because of these neurotransmitters and hormones (compared to, when you ingest a high carb meal and your secrete tons of serotonin)?

when I am fasting , not only my focus increases , but my creativity increases . I buiilt a module in 2 days in this Ramadan for my company that saved 14 hour work a week . I would spend 6-7 hours working on it and dont feel any tiredness

Ive done few days. It is weird how you don’t really feel hungry after 24 hours mark (more or less) I, like you said, have never experienced this mental clarity. My brain becomes so much more powerful in all aspect. Concentration, focus, creativity, speed of thoughts, etc

Some people says that is better the dinner but for me as someone who really likes food what works for me is first just eat the big meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner), nothing of taking something small between meals, and then what I do is that I eat my dinner but then it starts my fast.
So what I do is if for example my dinner was at 8pm then I just skip breakfast and eat again until lunch doing a brunch maybe at 1 or 3. So without doing a great effort I am doing a fast of 16-18 hours and I recieved 8 hours free of fast, I am a Christian rasta or rasta 12 tribes, so after praying, reading the Bible and meditating I am in the hands of Our Lord and in an spiritual state so like I am not hungry any more and then I start to learn maths for understanding this beautiful creation.

I can especially vouch for the statement about "sleepy carbs" to many carbs mid day makes me sleepy in contrast if I exchange the amount if carbs for protein I feel more fresh
In the video Andrew talked about how sufficient blood-glucose from eating gives your neurons the ability to more precisely encode information. This is perceived as thinking clearly. Low blood-glucose can also give that perception because your body is in a more sympathetic state and less blood is diverted to digest food. I think there are other contributing factors were not mentioned here such as autophagy. From my understanding, autophagy not only occurs in the body, but also in the brain and cleans up excess material similar to the restorative process during sleep. I'm not sure how they measured this, but I remember they had some studies that showed a reduction in tumor size of patients who fasted which indicates this process is occurring. I thought it was the autophagy which puts your brain in a much "cleaner" state so information flows more freely. In my mind I think of signals taking shorter path through neuron structure but I doubt that is actually what happens.

I've had success with stimulant free pre workout powders to avoid the need for caffeine pre workout in the morning. Although they sometimes can spike insulin.
I did a 22 day water fast, which resulted in extraordinary relief from nociceptive pain, huge reduction in sympathetic tone, lower overall body temperature. Noticed an improved Co2 tolerance in breath training/max exhale testing, improved overall somatic experience, mental clarity, and extended focus during prayer and meditation, with the additional plus of around 30 lbs weight loss of which 15 lbs returned in the following 60 days resuming normal eating and training. Due to the intense protocol, there was no intense training or strength work aside from isometrics and simple movement training (Task-oriented training with balls and objects and Tai Ji). Intend to repeat annually if circumstances permit...
Did you notice any hair loss a few months later? I did a 33 day water fast and 30-60 days later I lost a ton of hair (it all grew back…even better actually). The two things that stood out to me in fast were the drop in body temperature and having no desire to eat at all. I also had no sexual desire and improved focus.
@@BillyHannon14 33 is amazing discipline. Did you use any electrolytes or salt at any point? I didn't notice hair loss, but definitely had a decreased libido and increased mental focus as well. I was also interested in less researched but anecdotal testimonials that it would reduce scar tissue, calcium deposits in joints and arterial plaque, basically waste tissue as the body metsbolises itself for efficiency. Unfortunately I don't have a way to measure that but definitely had a significant reduction in pain and joint stiffness, and I think decreased fluid retention...
@@Adam_Rae I did add potassium and pink Himalayan sea Salt daily. I think I also added some magnesium occasionally. I remember the sea salt was so satisfying that I slowly ate a few teaspoons daily and it felt like a snack. I also drank a lot of Smart Water.
I fasted for the same reasons as you. I was really interested in the autophagy and just giving my body a break from constantly digesting food since the day I was born. I wish there was a way to measure it!

Small lunch, big dinner 2 - 3 hours before bed and usually when ive finished most of the cognitive work for the day!
I personally feel very sleepy when I eat a good amount of food. If I eat just enough to be satisfied, my concentration and focus is good. If I eat too much, my mind gets chaotic and sleepy. If my stomach is empty, my focus also gets enhanced.
My priority is gaining weight and building muscle. Find it hard to hit my macros target unless i eat pretty regularly

And Sufis mostly keep themselves in fasted state while performing ibadah like Namaz, Tilawat,etc. Alhamdulillah that I was born a Muslim, true and the most logical religion. I'm a Muslim and in our religious we fast 14-16hrs a day for a month (Ramadhan) each year. Then we get to eat by the sunset at 7-8 p.m. We drink milk, eat dates, and other kinds of foods (we avoid eating too much because one of the purposes of fasting is to let your stomach rest) which can lead you focusing and achieving a lot during your day. By the 9th hour, we start to get tired and exhausted (it depends on the age and of course how much energy you spent during the day.) I really recommend starting this habit for a few days and if it's hard for you just try it for one day. Choose a task or two to work on, it doesn't matter just something to get you busy, I'm not saying you'll do it perfectly but you'll see yourself not just getting onto focus, but flow mode!

I started doing OMAD five months ago , my life has changed in ways unimaginable to the human mind..At age 47, I am beating myself up for not having started OMAD much earlier in my adult life...
how much calories do u consume in a day since ur on OMAD, i eat 2 twice a day so my calories intakes are less.
@@sachinsingh-wg9bl I don't really count the calories but I eat more than one usual portion a day , meaning when I eat each day the portion is like one and a half ..I eat very slowly and get very full. I eat around 1 pm each day and done eating for 23 hours.. Not constantly shoving food down my throat has been very beneficial to my organs , now that I do a daily fast of 23 hours each day, they really have a chance to re-set and rest ... Plus, my mental capacity is through the roof since I started doing OMAD.. Also, my sleep quality has improved with OMAD.. That may also be due to the fact that I quit alcohol around the same time I started doing OMAD 7 months ago so not drinking alcohol has also huge benefits on getting a good quality of sleep each night .. When I wake up in the morning around 6 am I am very well rested and can wake up within seconds , meaning I feel like I have been already up for 2 hours the moment I wake up , that is also due to OMAD since I did not have that feeling before.. Also, I hit the gym each day , always in the morning , on an empty stomach, and my performance has not suffered at all .. I run 6 km each day without any problems. So, life is pretty amazing with this OMAD stuff .. The human body is an amazing machine that could adapt to anything if you take the time to train it .. I am convinced that OMAD is great for us if you are an adult over 35 years old you don't really need 3 meals a day or snacks constantly .. I am also convinced that eating is more of a psychological activity rather than a biological activity ..

I love intermitten fasting, it help me focus and energized in the morning and stabilize my calories intake which in turn help me lose weight. A shame that no one else in my family practice if with me though. They are too used to breakfast.

I think if someone is well regulated, her blood glucose level will remain pretty much constant. Of course, that assumes that the person did not overeat. These days I weigh the amount of carbs I eat. This is not to limit calories, rather it is an attempt not to overstress my system. Digestion is pretty hard on the body.

I'm wondering if the type of food can affect your concentration and focus. Simple carbs vs complex carb. Low fiber vs high fiber diet.
"Simple carbs are more quickly digested and absorbed than complex ones, so simple carbs can raise your blood glucose levels faster and higher." This is a direct quotation from the NIH, National Institute of Health.
Also Low Fiber is more involved with Simple Carbs and High Fiber with Complex Carbs (for the most part).

very interesting, when I am fasting for a whole day, in the afternoon I usually feel weird and I always though about neurons probably not functioning well, usually a nap and salt helps, but I am sure it has to do with this.
I miss fasting but I have a physically demanding job that requires the use of carbohydrates. I'm taking lionsmane 5x a week though and I feel confident and also a bit quick at thinking. But nothing compares to that genuine serotonin from intermittent fasting. Everything is easier while fasting and I have the lease amount of social anxiety while on it.
I think the confusion comes from who is doing the fast. If you eat on a normal schedule and decide to fast, you will not get the mental clarity and focus. But if you are truly fat adapted and your body has reset to a fasted state, you will have a tremendous amount of mental focus and clarity during your fast. I'm on an OMAD lifestyle, and often, when I eat my one meal, I will crash because a tremendous amount of blood and energy will be needed for digestion. But from the time I wake up until my first meal at 5 pm, I am a walking, talking, high energy focused machine.
When following a keto diet and intermittent fasting, if I have some food that has sugar in it or high carbs, I will within an hour feel totally exhausted so I don't do it! Sugar makes me want to take a nap! I think much more clearing during the fasting period.
Pulling from memory in endo and biochem classes but when you fast aren't you undergoing gluconeogenesis to maintain plasma glucose? Everything you said about lethargy development is true due to redirection of blood flow but I'm curious what eventually causes brain fog from fasting an extended period of time. I personally run an omad diet
For those that don't know, gluconeogenesis is synthesizing glucose from stored sources of the body and not food intake

If you’re drinking electrolytes before working out in the morning, then you’re breaking your fast early on (because electrolytes have calories, including the ones from LMNT). Thus, you’re doing your first bout of work feasted. Please clarify

I’ve been experimenting with a CGM (I’m a very healthy individual) and notice a massive blood sugar spike when I do high aerobic, or HIIT workouts at 6am. I also notice a massive spike when I do a fasted cold plunge. Any explanation on that would be super sweet! Thanks!
Interesting you mention that. My daughter has type 1 diabetes and we experienced that as well. The drs told us that when our body has very low blood sugar levels, the liver will spike and provide a shot of glucose into our bloodstream to prevent damage. She would go to bed with ideal numbers and wake up with very high blood sugar levels. With monitoring during the night I noticed she was indeed dropping super low. Never thought about this happening to people who are fasting but makes sense.
Another thing I found to help focus was to remove all animal and processed foods. The transit time is much shorter and less harsh on your system, making you feel 'emptier' more often. Less blood needed around the area when there's nothing there that needs attention, like food without fiber. Especially, animal products as they can still be in your system for up to 72 hours. 2 days longer than it needs to be! Not to mention, much better blood work overall, especially with a1c.

@8th account I believe an important factor is the quality of the meat. There's a difference in 3 star mince to organic grass fed. I feel phenomenally better consuming the more expensive cuts
Got it! I shall fast for 3 hours from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. before breakfast and I shall fast for 4 hours from 12 noon to 4 p.m. before lunch and I shall fast for 4 hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. before dinner and at 9:30 I shall start sleeping...
As a Muslim I am happy we have a full month of Fasting (Ramadan). Ramadan is also coming. Welcome Ramadan.

@@rebellion6468 Well in my country fasting will last for minimum 12 to 13 hrs. Fasting starts early morning before start disappears and ends with sunset.
As orthodox Christians, we fast half of the days of a year. 😉
Well, yes we know that brain prefers glucose etc etc, but my best and exceptional clarity of mind was on multiday water fast. Total lifting of brain fog. Never to be accomplished at fed state.
I did a lot of multiple day water fast, most of them for 10 days, that clarity comes after at least 3 days, and it holds for a few days, sometimes to the end , sometimes it never happens, sometimes brain fog is worse that in fed state. I don't know what is the causing factor, but definitely stress plays a role here by my experience.

I also felt the benefits of intermittent fasting and noticed a substantial increase in my focus ability and also, I don't feel sleepy in day time.
But Question here ?? What about someone who is trying to build muscles in that case you have to take enough calories and multiple meals how should I manage my Intermittent fasting routine in that case ??

I also believe there is difference between following a vegetarian/vegan diet to an omnivor diet. You feel much less sleepy when you have eaten unprocessed foods from plant origin.

Back in the days people were used to fast because they simply would run out of food for some reason. Nowadays people eat without feeling hungry. Nowadays nobody knows what hungry looks like in practice.
I also eat breakfast at 11 and nothing after 8 :) I think that’s the best way to stay healthy
