Nickel Creek performs Mother Mother's "Hayloft," off the 2014 album A Dotted Line. Video directed by Steven Mertens. NickelCreek.com iTunes: smarturl.it/nickelitunes www.nonesuch.com
Holy shit some of these comments are negative. It's a creative take on a great song. The musicianship is great. I'm a huge Mother Mother fan and a fan of Nickel Creek and Chris Thile. I'm just stoked to see that Mother Mother is getting recognition from other great musicians. It's a bummer to see so much of the fanbase be so negative.
Personally I prefer the simple manic energy of the original, but this is still a damn good cover. It's always great to hear an artist put its on spin on things while paying respects to the original. Almost everyone I introduce the original to hate it, but this darker rhythmic tone might be more palpable to those people.
Original is way better, but I gotta give these guys props for recognizing the awesomeness that is Mother Mother. I mean, to be covered by Chris Thile would be no small aspiration. I don't love all of Mother Mother's work, but what I do love I love deep. And you can't say anything about Chris Thile because it wouldn't sound as good as he does when he's got that mandolin. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
I'm gonna be honest, I heard this version when I was little first so I grew up thinking Nickel Creek wrote it... when I found Mother Mother and got really into them I was shocked to find Hayloft was theirs. Really great song guys!
Just saw Nickle Creek perform live last night and had never heard this song until then. It’s 100 times better live. Definitely my favorite song of the night, hands down. Got home from the concert and immediately downloaded the live version into my music collection. 🎶 ❤️
i love this cover so much ! i've always argued that hayloft is functionally just a country song in an alt rock style and i think this captures that really well :DD
I friggin love this song. My daughter was shocked when I was singing it. She was like, Mother, Mother? I’m like, um, no. So we played each other the versions we knew. 😂 Love them both!
I notice a few nasty old troll type comments here, however, may I suggest that this version is the first version of this song I heard and I love it. It then prompted me to locate the origins of the song and lucky me, I discover Mother Mother. Thank you Nickel Creek, for supporting awesome artists like Mother Mother. Screw the haters who seem to be blind to what you are doing.
Stephen Morris Mother Mother is a bigger band than nickel creek. That’s like a random UA-cam doing a cover of a Taylor swift song and saying “omg thanks for supporting Taylor swift she needs the recognition”
I listen to Nickle Creek everyday and have A Dotted Line set as my go to sleep music. As far as Hayloft goes I heard this cover first so it took a few listens to get into the original. Most songs are great when they are Metallised or Bluegrassed!!🤘🤠
I mean, I prefer the original, mostly cause I'm a purist when it comes to music so the original is usually better to me, but its good that they went and covered this song. The style may not be my taste, but like, the music video is pretty rad.
OK, guys, I know you all are busy with your other projects, but I really could use another album/tour fix. It's been two years! Who knew that nickel in the water could be so addictive?
No words for just how much I love this cover... saw them years ago & they covered Ms. Spears' Toxic~ which was also AHmazing. Wish they'd record that cover too. :)
well, you can hear her saying 'gott-a'. She's not entirely skipping, she's just saying it really fast and short. Though it is sometimes hard to notice it
Not a fan of the video (oh well). I would've gone a different direction on this one, but hey. They're the talent.......they can do what they want :) And I love them

They didn’t credit the original artists, (mother mother was the band who made the song)
@@coralpuppytin1139 Mother Mother is credited in the description actually.
@@Shanannigan1 didn’t see it my bad it was late at night
They're basically the same song I don't get what all the negativity is about

i love both the original and this version so much. they both have their own unique feel to it.
%100
I def agree. It depends on what mood you in
Same
The og version is too harsh for me

ME TOO OH MY GOD
SAME
Love this cover. I like it when NC get all weird and experimental on us with their covers of indie rock songs
I love the stereo effect of this one
AMAZING cover.
this voice too matching this song
Got to see them live last week, after seven years of waiting, most amazing night possible.
Saw Nickel Creek (and loved this song) Saturday night, after at least 7 years of enjoying their music! Gonna see them again next month, I hope!
That was one fast tractor!
Or one slow pickup.
Two great comments 😂😂

I love how weird hayloft is and you just made it weirder and I love this song even more

Finally.. found this track available on UA-cam was making my day..!
I love both versions of this song but this one I listen to when im jog/walking XD
this is (by a very small margin) my favorite version
Great job Steven! I love it. The dad has the coolest expressions. Video kept me interested all 3 minutes.
Next time those two see each other, it's at his place
This feels more accurate to the lyrics imo
What a treat! Wow! Thanks!
AHHHHHH I LOVE THIS COVER SO MUCH
This gave me chills throughout my whole body 😭
Def love the originality. You young'uns experiment as much as you like.
Irene Conley it isn’t originality. The song is by Mother Mother
@@solitairehoney6944 ok its a remix duh
Lovely.
Wait....coolest song I've ever heard
Vince Mcneil not their song. Nickel creek didn’t write it or originally sing it. It’s by Mother Mother
cool story
heard this song on Nashville's NPR - shared
wonderful song

wow that's great!!!! can't wait to see you guy at ACL
I like that this one has more panic to it, but I also like the chaotic-ness of the original one.
OK, guys, I know you all are busy with your other projects, but I really could use another album/tour fix. It's been two years! Who knew that nickel in the water could be so addictive?
Loving this!
Amazing video!!!!! So dope!
Love 💕 great job
A great song, and a great cover of it
And this video is so creative! I cant imagine the time it took.
Damn, I really dig the percussion and violin here!!
Great song....very inspiring...cool video too..
Great cover tune from one of my all time favorite bands! Welcome back! :)
I love the country feel to it, really fitting for the theme of the song. A great cover!
This is epic
This was really amazing live. The vocals kinda remind me of Mindless Self Indulgence.
The music the art this was AMAZING
Heckuva tune.
I never heard the original, so this is awesome to me!
I love your version....... ty
I actually hadn't seen the music video before. It's really well animated.
Woahhhhh so fresh!!
Awesome!
This is an amazing cover!
Utah Tour Date....please!!!!
amazing
This is on dotted line??? As a long time fan of both bands I had no idea of this!!
This was an exceptional video! Very original concept. Love when artists personalize their work.-the hidden names in the corn was a unique idea.
Kacie Hatley They didn't personalise their own work, it's someone else's
This isn’t their work. It’s not their song
a hayloft II version would me amazing, love this style
To be honest I like the violins!
*fiddles 😉
I Loved from Brazil :D
lovely
Love the hound dog.
Love this so much!! 😬😬😬🤪🤪🤪
I don't think Glenn ever took Maggie to the hayloft (or got chased off by Herschel!)! LOL
that was fun i like it ..!
This version is much better than the original, and I'm a Mother Mother fan, ok? 🤣
shit fire I love you guys....
Oh my
N o i c e :)
This is lowkey fire
YES
No words for just how much I love this cover... saw them years ago & they covered Ms. Spears' Toxic~ which was also AHmazing. Wish they'd record that cover too. :)
What does the corn say?
the same thing that the fox does ;)
please bring this to lossless!
Domestic violence has never been so catchy
Thank you +AlexSierraOfficVEVO !
I like it, personally.
😍
Nice cover.
Literally the music video but years earlier
Nice cover. Love the original though,
Contrary to pretty much every other comment on here, I actually like this better than the original.
Too each their own.
I like it but there’s nothing compared to the hard strums in the original
Damn yes!
Interesting version
He has the right kind of gun! Hayloft 2 bothers me so much because of that modern shotty instead of a double barrel.
Holt shit this is catchy
Mitch Prentice the original is by Mother Mother you should check it out it’s much better
Nut and Bolt
Shoot the Jizz and out you is
Shoot your load and hit the road
A couple different names for this song
I think I've now heard country punk?
This looks so paper like
The singer is skipping the 'a' in 'My daddy's got gun' entirely..
well, you can hear her saying 'gott-a'. She's not entirely skipping, she's just saying it really fast and short. Though it is sometimes hard to notice it
and?
@@jorbasaur It sounds stupid. There should be an 'a' in there.
Didint hate it but the original is just so quirky and different that everything else sounds average
Not a bad cover but I’m more of stuck to the original also ima big Mother Mother nerd 😅
Has mother mother commented on this?
Not a fan of the video (oh well). I would've gone a different direction on this one, but hey. They're the talent.......they can do what they want :) And I love them
picaboo2u2
Love this song, even though I have no feelings at all about Nickel Creek.
this sounds nothing like nickel creek DX
damn i really prefer this one to mother mother's lmao but i might be bias because i heard this one first
not bad but nothin compared to the original
What the pluck is this? Violins against farm girls?
WTF?? Where's the mandolin?
I prefer Mother Mother's version better.
