Building Muscle with Kettlebell Swings : Try This Small Change

  • If your focus is building muscle with kettlebell swings, at some point your going to have to progressively lift heavier.
The Kettlebell swing is not a lift with your arms, yet you ABSOLUTELY use the muscles in your upper back, shoulders and arms to do the exercise. It's silly to say you don't.
The heavier you go the more arms you'll have to use. This is great if you are doing our heavy 50 swings a day focus.
Try this tip to activate more muscle for your heavy kettlebell swings that will keep you safer and in better control as well.
    Please share anywhere you wish.

This is a great detail, not just for building muscle, but even more importantly, to protect the ligaments like you mentioned. I’m going to start doing swings this way!

i also feel like when I keep a bit of a bend in my elbows, I feel it more in my arms and chest because I'm resisting the bell from swinging all the way out? it's easier to do the swing though, because the length of the pendulum is shorter. I'd like to try that in combination with the pulling at the edge of the grip. really is amazing how much you can do with such a "simple" exercise. it's been a lifesaver during COVID. thanks!

Hi Joe, and thanks for this KB Swing added tip / tutorial!
1 comment / question: I’ve been doing a variation of my own to the same exercise by activating a bit more the calves, raising my heels right after elevating my arms-KB from the crouch.
I’ve tried both exercise variations and I don’t feel like sacrificing the core movement’s muscles activation neither the form itself, though, definitely feeling the calves working more all in one integrated exercise.
Is this a NOT to do movement or can we be talking here of and added value muscle activation-work 🆚 an intrinsic activation of the calfs as of a more support - stabilization muscle(s) involved within the KB Swings? Thanks a ton!!! ✊

I've smoked myself for a while just doing this one thing. I always thought there was more lat involved there, but agree it'll get the mid-lower traps and the rear delt. Of course, I find learning that one thing helps when transitioning to 1H swings with heavier bells. Thinking a 40kg is in my future now that I've achieved Timeless Simple.

    • @kettlebellmusclegain

I've been finding lately that a swing isn't worth doing unless it's at least half my body weight. Makes a huge difference and forces me to focus on form and keeping everything tight during the swing.

    • @kettlebellmusclegain

One hand swings are a little different due to the already occuring rotation. Just think of keeping your shoulder in socket when it gets heavy

Does it matter how heavy your kettlebell is for example I have a 40 lb kettlebell I can do about 20 swings with it but if I up my repetitions intensity time under tension can I still build muscle if I don't take any breaks in between from each kettlebell exercise
