Great point ! What so many people don’t realize as that a great skater who has phenomenal balance has so many more opportunities to deliver huge hits. Kasparaitis clearly shows you don’t need monster size to deliver monster hits. Sure bigger less mobile defenders deliver big hits but not as frequently because there not as mobile and not in position to deliver them.
Considering Lindros has about half a foot on Kasparaitis and still managed to get hit in the head, it really drives home how carelessly he had his head down as he was coming through on this play.
I watched many junior games back in the 90’s as a Bulls season ticket holder. Eric was the most complete hockey player I have ever seen. His one and only major flaw he put his head down in heavy traffic. He got away with it vs kids much smaller then him but once he went to the show he got rocked.
He was great when the average size of his opposition was 6 feet tall. In the nhl, they started to have defensemen who were 6'3 or guys who were just dangerous hitters.
He had another major flaw- he liked to hit like an enforcer but had a chin of fine china. Never saw another player of his size get laid out so much in 60 years of watching hockey. Played with a style that invited an early retirement and his fellow nhl-ers accepted his invitation
That is quite a well-executed hit. Kasparitis was a relentless hitman. As a (former) hockey player that even a player as skilled as Lindros sometimes simply forgets to watch out. The bigger the ego, the heavier you will be hit.

I mean, I’m a diehard pens fan who started watching hockey during this era. I always appreciated Kasparitis in a way I didn’t, say, Matt Cooke because kasparitis tried to lay hard, clean hits as opposed to leaving his feet like Cooke often would. That said, to pretend that a guy making contact with another guy’s head shouldn’t be a big deal is insane to me. We missed out on potentially one of the greatest seasons of all time by Sidney Crosby because of unnecessary headshots, and we missed out on prime years of a generational talent like Lindros because of multiple headshots. I understand in the case of Lindros there is a what goes around comes around element to it, as he actually did play the game in the same vein as a Tom Wilson does today, and it often looked like he had intent to injure (which I think is the main reason the Pens bench congratulated Kasparitis here). That said, a hit like this one being taken out of the game doesn’t lessen the product. Kasparitis didn’t knock the puck loose with this hit, and Lindros wasn’t making a play on that puck considering he had lost it in his feet almost directly after he received the pass. The more chances I have to see elite players play the game, the better the product is. Although we all agree Lindros needed to learn to keep his head up when he was in traffic, it still sucks his career was cut short in no small part because the rules and the officiating of the late 90s and early 2000s offered a big player like him almost no protection whatsoever.

But I do not regret that decision at all and now that I found out that the NHL is now a pussy product to watch , They have turned a game that millions of people loved into a 84 game ALL star Game type hockey every game and I've heard it is so retarded to watch now, by taking hitting and all that great stuff out of hockey they have made it boring to watch very similiar to what the NBA is now too. Eric Lindros was a great player no doubt, but I hate to say it his size, ego, and growing up as a player bigger than everyone else, he always skated with his head down and never learned. His career was shorted because of it.
I don't remember commenting here, but I will add. I am a lifelong Pens fans but this is moment where I became a diehard fan. I believe the Pens went on to win 6-5, and Flyers went on for a another 25 years of frustration...

I remember watching this game live on a Saturday Afternoon as that was essentially the beginning of the end for Lindros in Philly. They lost in 5 to Buffalo in ‘98, as he was never the same when he got back that season. He had the collapsed lung in ‘99 and missed the playoffs. He then got another concussion in ‘00, came back in the Conference Finals and played in his last game as Flyers when Stevens knocked him out on that open ice hit.

Lindros definitely rushed back after that concussion as that would have never happened today. A lot of people are commenting on the Penguins reaction on the bench, but this is what rivalries were back then. Ironically Jagr signed with the Flyers in 2011 and was beloved by the fans here after we hated him for years as a Penguin and that long flowing hair! Lol

Kasparitis was my neighbor in southpointe for his years in Pittsburgh and to see him on the street you’d think nothing of him. His wife at the time was more intimidating looking than him...but on the ice...he was a human wrecking ball.
Old Caps fan here, I remember his seeming smallish for 90s D but damn his hip checks str8t on brutal. One guy could really really skate in this clip, the other guy was a lot heavier and Eric ran his own fat face into a shoulder pad full speed. Those were my good old days in hockey
I wish I could have been there. What was the crowd like when it happened? It was pretty wild on TV. This was a great game. They took the offensive against the flyers and came back to win.

100% true. He used to go out and target rookies to hit them as hard as he could. He admitted he played passive during his time in NY and afterwards. Crazy he retired at only 33 and was a depth 4th liner for Dallas who was a healthy scratch.

Ahhh...what a great scene. One can't knock Kasparaitis for the hit either, like many Lindros fans would have liked, it was a clean hit. Good on 'im!! All too often one saw Lindros really exerting his presence by intimidation towards new or smaller players. I love this scene almost as much as the Stevens hit on him. Would be interesting if roles were swapped and Lindros was on a team as deep as a guy like Forsburg. I'm sure with Lindros skating head down all the time, he'd have gotten hit eventually no matter what, but his PPG totals and goal totals were incredible in Philly. What if the guy had more capable teamates and a long career without injuries. The guy might've been a top 5 all time player when he retired. Instead, he's a perfect example to show your kids on why not to skate head down and to put awareness first, and the puck second. You'll be able to feel where the puck is with more experience.

Jeff Wood The irony is that Lindros was criticized for taking off games after his concussion as players, management, fans and media questioned someone’s toughness back then. Primeau came back the next game after a concussion and it ended his career as he still feels effects today. It’s amazing how much has changed in sports regarding physical play compared to today.
@Puckman637 He did lunge. You can see from several angles that at the last moment he powers his elbow and shoulder forward into his head. It was well timed, and way more than just momentum.

You never want to see anyone get knocked out, but what a great hit. It was interesting the announcer talking about his brothers career being shortened by concussions, and it sounded like he was aware of "CTE" in 98.
People knew about concussions then but what no one understood was how to diagnose one without symptoms and when a player was truly ready to be back on the ice again. Back then, the logic was once the headaches, blurred vision, etc. stopped you were good to go. Now we know the brain isn't fully healed and playing in that state leaves someone vulnerable to second impact syndrome. Needless to say Lindros was probably returned to the ice too soon multiple times over concussions in his career. Plus we also know there's a hereditary component to susceptibility to head injuries which is why players like the Lindros family and the Sauer family all seem to have had concussion related issues.
I remember begging my coach to move me from goaltender to right wing for the last game of the season. Looking at the puck as I carried it over the blue line is the last thing I remember about that game.
I remember this hit. I was 11 years old, and Lindros was my favorite player. I lived in Sacramento and liked the sharks too, but lindros and flyers were my team.

It was a rough time for the Isles but seeing him play was incredible. I actually played in a night league in Syosset and he was at that rink a lot. Just working by himself. Seeing his speed on the ice without anyone else around him gave you a sense of how fast he was. Great player.

The contact would have been to the upper chest if Lindros didn't put his head down. Even today that's not a suspension. at least if they follow their own rules. It's Lindros' fault. Clean hit. Didn't leave his feet.

@@21sled I don't think he said it's okay to head hunt. He said the hit was okay because it would have been at Lindros's shoulder if he didn't put his head down. That's true. Doesn't mean Kaspar was targeting the head on purpose. Lindros is 6'4". Kaspar was 5'11". There's no way he could head hunt on Lindros unless he jumped, which he clearly didn't do. He lined up the hit and then Lindros tucked his head. It'd be illegal today and result in a suspension, but it wasn't head hunting.
Darius kasparaitis was probably the biggest thorn in the side for my Buffalo Sabres every team he played for was in the same conference. He scored the game-winning goal for Pittsburgh against dominik Hasek that was the deciding factor to move dominik Hasek out of Buffalo
rinkrat55 if you watch him in juniors, he would go end to end with his head down because he was so good, as that was a bad habit he took to the NHL. Gretzky once said he got flattened in juniors by Jay Wells cause he had his head down, and he changed his way once he entered the NHL.

Marlin Ahenakew i played against eric lindros as a 12 year old and even then he would get clocked cause his head was down. He never ever learned to keep his head up. He was always so big and had such a big ego that he thought this stuff couldnt happen to him. He guessed wrong and could never learn his lesson.

I mean, I’m a diehard pens fan who started watching hockey during this era. I always appreciated Kasparitis in a way I didn’t, say, Matt Cooke because kasparitis tried to lay hard, clean hits as opposed to leaving his feet like Cooke often would. That said, to pretend that a guy making contact with another guy’s head shouldn’t be a big deal is insane to me. We missed out on potentially one of the greatest seasons of all time by Sidney Crosby because of unnecessary headshots, and we missed out on prime years of a generational talent like Lindros because of multiple headshots. I understand in the case of Lindros there is a what goes around comes around element to it, as he actually did play the game in the same vein as a Tom Wilson does today, and it often looked like he had intent to injure (which I think is the main reason the Pens bench congratulated Kasparitis here). That said, a hit like this one being taken out of the game doesn’t lessen the product. Kasparitis didn’t knock the puck loose with this hit, and Lindros wasn’t making a play on that puck considering he had lost it in his feet almost directly after he received the pass. The more chances I have to see elite players play the game, the better the product is. Although we all agree Lindros needed to learn to keep his head up when he was in traffic, it still sucks his career was cut short in no small part because the rules and the officiating of the late 90s and early 2000s offered a big player like him almost no protection whatsoever.

But I do not regret that decision at all and now that I found out that the NHL is now a pussy product to watch , They have turned a game that millions of people loved into a 84 game ALL star Game type hockey every game and I've heard it is so retarded to watch now, by taking hitting and all that great stuff out of hockey they have made it boring to watch very similiar to what the NBA is now too. I remember watching this game live on a Saturday Afternoon as that was essentially the beginning of the end for Lindros in Philly. They lost in 5 to Buffalo in ‘98, as he was never the same when he got back that season. He had the collapsed lung in ‘99 and missed the playoffs. He then got another concussion in ‘00, came back in the Conference Finals and played in his last game as Flyers when Stevens knocked him out on that open ice hit.

Kasparitis was my neighbor in southpointe for his years in Pittsburgh and to see him on the street you’d think nothing of him. His wife at the time was more intimidating looking than him...but on the ice...he was a human wrecking ball.

Would be interesting if roles were swapped and Lindros was on a team as deep as a guy like Forsburg. I'm sure with Lindros skating head down all the time, he'd have gotten hit eventually no matter what, but his PPG totals and goal totals were incredible in Philly. What if the guy had more capable teamates and a long career without injuries. The guy might've been a top 5 all time player when he retired.
Instead, he's a perfect example to show your kids on why not to skate head down and to put awareness first, and the puck second. You'll be able to feel where the puck is with more experience.

Primeau came back the next game after a concussion and it ended his career as he still feels effects today. It’s amazing how much has changed in sports regarding physical play compared to today.

You never want to see anyone get knocked out, but what a great hit. It was interesting the announcer talking about his brothers career being shortened by concussions, and it sounded like he was aware of "CTE" in 98.
People knew about concussions then but what no one understood was how to diagnose one without symptoms and when a player was truly ready to be back on the ice again. Back then, the logic was once the headaches, blurred vision, etc. stopped you were good to go. Now we know the brain isn't fully healed and playing in that state leaves someone vulnerable to second impact syndrome. Needless to say Lindros was probably returned to the ice too soon multiple times over concussions in his career.
Plus we also know there's a hereditary component to susceptibility to head injuries which is why players like the Lindros family and the Sauer family all seem to have had concussion related issues.

When DK was on the Isles, I was living on Long Island and a college buddy had season tickets. We went to pretty much every home game. It was a rough time for the Isles but seeing him play was incredible.
I actually played in a night league in Syosset and he was at that rink a lot. Just working by himself. Seeing his speed on the ice without anyone else around him gave you a sense of how fast he was. Great player.

John Connor it doesn’t matter “who’s fault it was” he even said “shoulder to nose” it was clean back then but today we are smarter and realize after players like Lindros that hits like that can end someones career and are not okay. Just because someone has their head down doesn’t make it okay to head hunt. They didn’t “ask for it” and you can still hit shoulder to shoulder
@@21sled I don't think he said it's okay to head hunt. He said the hit was okay because it would have been at Lindros's shoulder if he didn't put his head down. That's true. Doesn't mean Kaspar was targeting the head on purpose.
Lindros is 6'4". Kaspar was 5'11". There's no way he could head hunt on Lindros unless he jumped, which he clearly didn't do. He lined up the hit and then Lindros tucked his head. It'd be illegal today and result in a suspension, but it wasn't head hunting.

rinkrat55 if you watch him in juniors, he would go end to end with his head down because he was so good, as that was a bad habit he took to the NHL. Gretzky once said he got flattened in juniors by Jay Wells cause he had his head down, and he changed his way once he entered the NHL.

He was always so big and had such a big ego that he thought this stuff couldnt happen to him. He guessed wrong and could never learn his lesson.
