By the way, the song is an interpretation of king Louis XVI's last words. It's truly sad, he wasn't ready to be a king, and the revolution ended up executing him, everything he says in this song relates to his honestly tragic story. That's why it sounds almost melancholic and nostalgic, he enjoyed his time in the spotlight, but in the end realized he wasn't ready around 5 years and 1 head too late.
I'm... not sure that's the case here... It certainly comes up when you google it as the 'meaning behind' it., but I'm yet to find any quote from the band that specifically references him or the French revolution beyond the album cover and themes. Any other references are also in reference to the first person who I think was writing an opinion piece on their interpretation of it. From what I have found so far, Martin was inspired by the painting by Frida Kahlo titled "Viva La Vida"and the story behind it, and it took a while before he found a set of lyrics that fit the title. It is obviously about a king losing their kingdom and fits into the theme of revolutionaries and the like but from the (admittedly brief) amount of research I've done.... this comment above is based on the first google search of 'what is viva la vida about' and has pulled up an interpretation. That said, I like the interpretation so I hope that is indeed the case and I've missed something.
lol literally the same comment at the top of every one of these reactions. It’s like you guys run to these comments to try and be the first one to write this.

Coldplay are incredible. The scientist , coloratura , a rush of blood to the head also you really can’t place coldplay on “ rock “ or “ pop” they are everything and whatever they want to be !
Its about Louis XVI. He used to rule the world (with a grand army and a mighty fleet). But all his grandeur was built on pillers of salt and sand, and in reality the french state was deeply flawed and in great debt. This song is from his perspective as he walks towards the guillotine and he hears the crowds cheer for his decapitation. Him knowing st Peter wont call his name might be him reflecting on his life knowing he has sinned and wont go to heaven.
"for some reason i can't explain, i know st. peter won't call my name" is one of the saddest lines ever to me. st. peter is supposed to be the saint who guards the gates of heaven, and he decides who gets in or not. so this guy is basically saying he knows he won't be welcome in heaven.
The reason Coldplay have managed to stay together, and still like each other is they are all equal partners in the band. Irrespective of who writes the songs! They all get equal shares. That’s respect right there.
About 16:00, yes, it leads to Violet Hill, the next track in the album. Violet Hill is a rock pop song actually, one of the several singles that came out of the Viva La Vida album. On the other hand, as others have suggested, the 4 first albums from Coldplay contain rock pop songs such as Shiver, Yellow, In My Place, The Scientist, Clocks, God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, Fix You, etc. If you like to check out more pop songs, you can listen to the albums Mylo Xyloto, A Head Full of Dreams or Music Of The Spheres (their most recent album). They have also released some low profile albums such as Ghost Stories and Everyday Life which sounds like their initial albums 💿
For me, this was about the last album of theirs that had that pop rock vibe before they became a full pop band. So anything from this album or anything earlier would be a good listen/reaction. Trouble was the first song I remember hearing and loving, but The Scientist is my favorite. And I say all this as a metalhead. I also have a soft spot for Square One from their much maligned X&Y album (I love that album, I don't care what others say), and Fix You from that album is also very good. There is a live version of Viva La Vida on the EP LeftRightLeftRightLeft where the entire stadium does the vocal chanting at the end. It is chilling and worth a listen on your own time.
What I find so special is that the complete album Viva La Vida or Death and All his Friends has this vibe even if every song sounds different in its own way. It's this nostalgic and at the same time so fulfilling feeling that you can find everywhere on this album.
You should listen to the entire album "Viva La Vida or Death and All of His Friends". In my opinion it's their finest work, yet is very different from the rest. It has several other banger songs with good guitar riffs. My favorites are Viva La Vida, Lost!, Violet Hill, Cemeteries of London, and Chinese Sleep Chant (hidden track on "Yes"). The entire album is as cinematic as the title song, with themes of life, death, war, love, and revolution. Each song has its own unique place in the album with its own story and purpose. I find it really fun to listen through and reflect upon.
This song is an interpretation of King Louis XVI's lost final speech before his death following the French Revolution. It's written in Louis' point of view as he apologizes to his people and accepts his demise. For some background, Louis was imprisoned and publicly executed by his own people following his downfall. When he was marched to the guillotine for execution he attempted to give one last speech to his people before his death, but the French revolutionists booed and the executioners drums were played louder to drown out the sounds of his words. As so, before Louis could finish his speech he was forced into the guillotine and beheaded, his final words now lost forever.
Loved your reaction and review of Viva La Vida. I know I'm late with the recommendation but one of my top favorite Coldplay songs that is also more into rock is Politik (which they wrote as a reaction to the 9/11 tragedy). I would also recommend Yellow, The Scientist (another top favorite), God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, Violent Hill, Amsterdam, Shiver and from their latest albums, Coloratura. They do have a lot of interesting songs with many musical influences. Hope you do explore more.
I absolutely love "Viva La Vida" but "Clocks" really got me to like their music. As mentioned in previous comments this song is more about The French Revolution. Brilliantly made and executed.
Really enjoyed your reaction/analysis! I think Coldplay might not be the most complex band in terms of music but i don't know, i think the way to describe their music is 'clever' they do such a great job at keeping it simple but amazing hahaha I would love for you to listen to Coloratura, it's just amazing. And if you want to try something more rock-ish i recommend Violet Hill, wich is the song that goes right after Viva la Vida in the album and it's a perfect transition, also A rush of blood to the head (the song and the album if you want hahaha), God put a smile upon your face, Animals and 1.36 (hidden gems), and People of the Pride from their most recent album but initially intended to be on the Viva la Vida album. Ps: sorry for the long comment hahah
Coldplay's lyrics are some of the best ive heard...their B sides are amazing...Flags, Coloratura and Trouble in Town are great. If you want rock, try People of the Pride, Violet Hill, and God Put a Smile Upon your Face.
Hey man. Fantastic video. If you want Coldplay rock hits. - the album A Rush of Blood to the Head. The first 5 songs are maybe the greatest 5 song flow in Coldplay history with a Mega B side at the end called Amsterdam. Their new stuff is great too but from AROBTH you have to hit Clocks, Politik, and In My Place. All mega hits
I like Coldplay but have never done a deep dive into them either so it was interesting to watch you analyze this. The only part I didn't get was when you said the lyrics sound important but were clever charlatanism. How do you know that they are not actually saying something important? It just seemed like kind of a random assumption on your part. Now I have to go look them up and see if they are meaningful.
I think I misrepresented what I was thinking. I meant that using language dripping in grandiose imagery is like a magic trick. You could just as easily convey the same idea in the form of a Wikipedia article but the trickery is embellishing it with beautiful poetry to add a whole new layer of emotional connection. I meant it completely respectfully. 😝 I WISH I could write lyrics that beautiful!!
@@PrymalChaos Yes that makes more sense now. "Charlatanism" was probably a poor choice of words in this context but I see what you were getting at. I wasn't really listening to music much at all after Linkin Park but BTS brought me back into modern music. I understand your frustration, but there is this legal thing called "fair use". If a reactor doesn't fundamentally alter the original content by a reasonable amount, then it is not considered fair use, and therefore a breach of copyright. Reactors who respect the rights of the artist use techniques like pausing to discuss, rewinding, referring back, to not only educate viewers, but also make sure that their content is legal. The law states that your content has to be "transformative" in regards to the original music/video in order to be deemed fair. This is why movie reviews, and such can play clips to discuss the films. In the case of reaction videos it's harder to be compliant because we use the entire video in our reaction. Just discussing it at the beginning and the end is definitely not transformative. Reactors that don't are essentially stealing.

Rarely is the adjective ‘Epic’ used without hyperbole. In this case it’s a perfect description. 👌

I always interpreted it as vague and not as a specific king or emperor. It's a feel. Saint Peter won't call my name. He won't go to heaven.
