    Firstly and most importantly is that your content is gold!
    Secondly, when driving on Autobahn at “only” 190 km/h on the far left lane, you should have one eye on the rear mirror at all times to quickly change line so the faster cars can pass you😁

    Hi, my name´s Chris and I live in Mallorca. We are thinking about buying the Hanse 418 too and we are finding your videos really useful. Enjoy the boat and if you ever sail down to our part of the world we would be more than glad to give you a few tips about the area. Kind regards and keep up the good work! C&C

      Glad you like the channel, I don't have much to compare to but I really love our Hanse 418, do not regret our choice at all. It would be our dream to sail down there, (if it survives the chartering now, more to come on that) it will happen one day I'm sure. I'm not sure if you have seen the channel "Ryan and Sophie sailing", they are in your area at the moment, nice channel to watch. Let me know if you have any specific questions on the boat, more than happy to help. info@sailingyachtaurora.com. Best regards Chris and Tanja

    Hi. Great to see you both living the dream! You will love the 418, it is a fantastic design, sails really well and very comfortable below. We can relate to the journey you are on as also completed the factory tour whilst our 418 was built and even though sailed for years the excitement of the journey ahead was wonderful. Now we have completed lots of miles UK, France and Channel Islands you will find Auroa like a second home and a very capable. Safe travels and best wishes for the channel.

      Cheers Jon, Thanks so much for the comment. Glad you enjoy your Hanse 418, what number is it? Ours is 68. I would love to sail her around the English channel also. When I lived in the UK my old boat was moored at Cobbs Quay in Poole. I headed out to Studland bay a lot, also the Isle of Wight and when I was younger the channel islands on my dads boat. I miss the sea salt and tide, it's nice in Stockholm just a different feeling. Cheers, Chris

    Chris, great episode. I have a question or two. Did you hire the inspector? Was the inspector provided by or worked for Hanse?
    You are so patient. You made a decision to buy this boat, and then quietly sat back and simply trusted the experts to build your boat. (or so it seems) I think you can get a glimmer of a person's occupation from their behavior in non-professional situations. From your demeanor in regards to your boat, I am wondering if you are a Physician? I could not help but to compare your attitude and actions to your new boat build with how I know my attitude and actions would be. Here is that comparison. We sign the papers and buy the boat on the same day:
    CHRIS, alright then I will look for email updates on the progress.
    LARRY, Great, when will you start laying glass? I need to know the date? In about 3 weeks, ok. I will call for an update as you get close to laying glass.
    LARRY, 4 days latter. Hi Hanse, any update on when you will start laying glass?
    LARRY, 3 days latter. Hi Hanse, any update on when you will start laying glass?
    LARRY, 3 days latter. Hi Hanse, any update on when you will start laying glass? Fantastic, will you start in the morning or afternoon? I want to be there.
    LARRY, 4 days latter. The day that work begins on laying the glass. The tour was nice, where is my boat going to be built. Are these the people who will be building my boat? I want to met each one. WHAT? I can't watch them begin the build do to factory safety concerns. I understand, and I am happy to sign a waiver of liability. OK, guys don't let me bother you, just go ahead and start on my boat.
    NEXT DAY. Morning men, what is on the schedule today? More glass! I knew that, go ahead, I will just stand here and have a coffee.
    NEXT DAY. What? I can not be here everyday? Why? OK, I understand. I will call in awhile for an update.
    LARRY, 3 days latter. Hi Hanse, how is my boat coming along?
    ETC.
    THE BOAT IS COMPLETE
    CHRIS, Alright then, just wrap it and I will be here for delivery in 4 months.
    LARRY, FANTASTIC! I don't care what the temp is. Put the full enclosure up. Kick the ice from the deck. I have a weeks supply of provisions. I will see you in a week, with a list of "bugs" I want you to look into. Shit! there is ice on the fuel dock, somebody put some salt down and chip some of the ice from those two pilings.
    Be happy, be safe.

      Hi Larry, yup we hired an inspector and he was independent but was used to working with Hanse, so whatever they pointed out, Hanse had to fix basically. Love the conversation, a physician.. well that would be interesting for sure :) I wouldn't do people much good, I am much better at fixing things tbh, or at least I try

    Don't know if the boat is antifouled yet, but if there is time you must remember to tell the yard you want enough epoxy primer on the hull (5-8 layers). I know the Bavaria yard only apply 2 coats of epoxy primer and that is not enough if you want to be sure to protect it from osmosis. I sanded down the bottom of my boat last year and have applyed 7 coats of epoxy primer.Another advantage with lots of primer coats is no rust on the keel. When I sanded down my keel it was graveyard rust.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  5 років тому

      The boat is getting antifouled in 3 -4 days I believe. I think only a couple of coats of epoxy are going on and thats because the new boats are coated with vinylester which prevents osmosis completely, or so I am told. As for the keel, we will probably deal with that when it comes out of the water after a couple of years and add a couple of coats to that. Thanks for the tips though :)

    • @twiper
      @twiper 5 років тому +1

      Ok :) Think the yard is right with the vinylester and some coats of epoxy. Could be nice if the keel keeps being rust free, maybe Hanse has a better iron quality than Bavaria.

      According what I can see Hanse had some osmosis problems around 2004 where only 4 years old boats got osmosis. And what Hanse did was they changed the production so they build the boats another way to eliminate the problem, they build the boats with polyester, foam core, polyester and then vinylester and then gelcoat. Vinylester is more expensive than polyester, stronger and is a hybrid between epoxy and polyester.Normal boats as my Bavaria is just polyester, foam core, polyester and then gelcoat. If you see under "Hull Construction" on Hanse's homepage you can see how the layers is build up, the green is polyester and the orange is vinylester www.hanseyachts.co.uk/about/quality---engineering

      Good to know, cheers. Looking at that page was one of the points that sold me on the boat also, they just seemed to have gone that extra mile even with a production boat, also everything just felt a little more solid than the competitors. I didn't know the history of problems Hanse have had though, very interesting, thanks for sharing.

      Idea for a video could definitely be the whole charter-situation as I'm guessing you've chosen that to help with the financials of purchasing a new-built boat? Like will you bareboat charter it or as a captain on it? (Personally I'd be worried about leaving the boat in unknown hands not sure how it's going to be treated.. Specially with so many credit-card captains out there).

      @@nomansland120 Yea it will be in bare boat charter, financially we don't absolutely have to but if we don't the boat won't be paid before 15 years. Ideally we want to go cruising before that so the chartering will help a lot over the next 5-6 years. Yes, it breaks my heart to leave her to people I don't know and for sure there will be down sides We'll will see how it goes.
      We have been asked by a couple of people to do a video about the chartering so it's in the plans. Would love to share the ups and downs so far. @@PierandCamilla even a partial skeg is better than no skeg. Does it have to be a mass-produced production boat that's aimed at the charter market?
      You can get a lot more boat for your money if you buy a custom-built or older boat like a Hans Christian.
      Many of these newer boats are like apartments or catamarans inside, which is nice, until you are at sea. They just look cheaply made too, perhaps that's why many older boats - even some of those 30-year ones, cost more than a brand new Hanse or Beneteau in the same class.

But there's hundreds of mass-produced boats crossing oceans every year and have haven’t seen any statistics that these boats are more likely to have problem or been abandoned. The Hull Windows - do you have any worry about them leaking over time? Does Hanse have any info about their hull windows and strength?

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  5 років тому +1

      Good question, haven't really thought about it to be honest, I've been more concerned about the top hatches, which when I think about it... which is closer to the water right? I did check out the fitting at the factory and the bonding method did look very solid to be honest, so I'm not too worried. Would love to show you some vids of the production line, but I did sign an NDA. I haven't seen any info from Hanse about the strength, sorry can't help much there

    • @ReinierMayer
      @ReinierMayer 4 роки тому +1

      @@SailingAurora The strength is not tested because no test-requirements exist. If you test for being waterproof you will find that as long as the window and the glue is undamaged, it’s waterproof. Unfortunately that changes when the window or the glue fails. That results in a rather large opening in a particularly unattractive location. Please contemplate about this for a while and choose wisely.
      A little guidance: 1) at exact what sort of moment a window like that is most likely to fail? 2) considering the size of the window; imagine the amount of water that comes into your boat per second when such a window collapses. 3) Will your wife notice the water damage if you decide not to wake her up if the window collapses at night sailing, but you decide to search for a bucket and sponge wading through her galley playing cool and in control?

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  4 роки тому

      @@ReinierMayer I like your thoughts and thanks for the input. There is a Hanse 388 that we rented over the summer that actually had a window leak. We were trying to find the leak as it was intermittent. The reason for this is that it only leaked when the boat healed over to one side. Every time we stopped in a harbour I was trying to get the water out and eventually when we were sailing the water climbed the side of the hull and submerged the lighting panel, not good. It wasn't until we got back and a few weeks later the leak was found. Hanse were really good about this and sent a new window up to Stockholm and it was replaced by a repair company (Plastskador & Montage), the company the our boat will be repaired by also.
      I think if there was a leak through the windows it would be very slight as the glass is actually pretty thick, strong, they are bolted into the side and also bonded with glue also. I am pretty confident in the windows. Cheers, Chris

      I am in the process of ordering my own 418. Now that you have your boat- is there anything that would have ordered differently? For example, are you happy with the quality of Valencia cushions or do you wish you picked Florence cushions?

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  5 років тому +2

      We are super happy with the valencia cushions and would not change them, but each to their own I guess. The only problem was one of the cushions was a little badly stiched, but this is a warranty claim and we are in the process of replacing it.
      Everything else is superb, I'm glad we didn't order the seats behind the wheels as in my opinion they would just get in the way (we were on the fence with that decision). The only thing I can think of right now is the mattresses, it might be worth the extra money to go for the luxury ones, the standard ones are ok but pretty basic.
      Other decisions I do not regret:
      - Heater
      - Bigger engine 57hp
      - Inmast furling
      - Full canopy over the cockpit (The "grandpa tent" makes a huge difference when it's cold or windy)
      - Bigger chartplotter
      - Having the name put on in Greifswald by Hanse
      - Inverter
      - Better sails (The midrange elfstrom sails)
      - Extra ventilation with extra windows on either side of the companion way
      - Integrated latter on bathing platform
      I hope this helps, I know that these decisions can be tricky when deciding. Let me know if you have any other questions or maybe if you want to skype or something to get some more detailed info, could even arrange to do it from the boat to give you a walkaround

The new HR's don't have skegs, Swans have sail drive prop. keel stepped vs. desk stepped masts. Is a ketch rig better or yawl? And so on. But you are free to choose, or even customize in certain cases. The captain/crew is key too of course. Case in point: Andreas Heide sailing an uninsulated Jenneau in the arctic.
