Recently I got a new gaming PC with a 4090 RTX. It was running fine for the first month or two, then it started shutting down after being used for 30 to 60 minutes. I moved the 4090 to another PCI Express slot and it worked again... at first... then after a week or so, games started crashing all the time. Kept doing research until I found your video. Your suggestion of plugging the PC directly into the wall made me realize that I had my powerful new gaming PC plugged into a cheap surge protector which was plugged into an outlet that was also being used by my window air conditioner. Dumb I know, just didn't even think about it. After plugging my gaming PC directly into a different outlet, the crashes have completely stopped. Thank you *so much* for this video! It's easy to get lost in a million different potential fixes for this kind of crashing issue (swapping out RAM, trying different PCI express slots, reseating CMOS battery, rolling back video card drivers... I tried a lot). If anyone else is experiencing issues with their gaming PC crashing/shutting down, try plugging it directly into an outlet that is not being used by anything else before you try reseating/moving around/replacing components. Happy gaming!

It took me a whole week. I tried changing settings and hardware (PCI-E 1 from 4 to 3, GPU pwr cables, G-Sync ON/OFF, changing RAM, changing nVidia drivers). In the end, the trick that worked for my 4080 was putting the Power Management mode to max performance. IMO most of Z690 motherboards (like my ASRock Z690 Taichi) have Bios' still not totally compatible with the 40XX series. Anyway, thank you for your proposed solutions.

After few minutes of gameplay or sometimes even browsing, my screen goes black and GPU fans ramps up to the max. I've reinstall drivers with DDU in Safe Mode, updated the BiOS.. nothing worked so far. But I guess the plug straight to the wall socket will work.. I have a extension cord with those "safe brakes" on electricity spikes so I'm guessing when the GPU spikes the Power Draw, that trigers a safety "break" from the extension. Can't wait to try this when I get back from work... Maybe that's why some ppl are experiencing an improvement when they change the Power Mode from Maximum Performance to NORMAL.. Thanks for the video, great idea ❤

Everything in this system was purchased new from Micro Center about 6 months ago. I finally got Intel to agree to an RMA so lets hope they don’t send me another faulty cpu or a refurb. I also changed my RAM from 4 dimm to 2 dimm and completely reinstalled Windows on a clean drive. I used DDU to uninstall all the nvidia drivers and then did a clean reinstall of that as well.

However, here a solution that I found useful.
No one has mentioned it, but I dug through my bios settings (gigabyte in specific)
And in the power settings, there was something called a power loader.
It says whenever there’s a low value of power, the security protocol crashes or freezes the computer.
It does say though, “if this occurs, please enable power loading”
Everything runs great now! I haven’t had an issue and I love my computer
    FYI I ENABLED POWER LOADING***

I’m going to have to give these a try. Cause I’m still unsure if it’s my GPU or CPU. Updated bios to the latest that is out. Turned off XMP and still have black screen of death. Rebooted and everything goes back to normal tried to stress test my CPU nothing happens runs normally. So I’m more thinking it could be my 4090 gaming x trio but I’ll give these all a try and see what’s up. My PC is also connected to a surge protector so I’ll try that first.
Update: for me it was 100% a power delivery issue. I was using custom cablemod PCIe cables and after replacing them with the factory adapter and my 3 PCIe cables it worked flawlessly. (Using MSI 4090 gaming x trio)

To put some background to this first, here's my GPU upgrades in order: GTX 780 -> 1660 super -> RTX 3060 OC -> 4080 Super OC
I had this problem only after upgrading to the RTX 4080. I also recently upgraded my CPU(an important note) from a 10th generation to a 13th gen.
My PC would barely launch, everything got hung up and was very slow, it stuttered, froze, etc, all except a blue screen.
I did everything mentioned, and got a new PSU, and it turned out to be an oversight on my part. I only ever needed one CPU cable connected to my motherboard, and all of those previous builds worked as intended, so It didn't even cross my mind to add a second one when I upgraded. So, it turned out that my CPU was severely bottlenecking my gpu...Oops.
I also got a PSU with the new gen cable to match the 4080 instead of using the splitter. Idk If that affected it, but I would think that's better than using a splitter for the GPU.
So, power management to max just to be sure, and don't forget to add that second CPU power cable when it is needed like I did. Actually, add it anyway. Something to ensure just in case the reason is the same as mine anyway.

After some testing, I found that if I ran a GPU stress test while running Cyber Punk benchmark, I could complete it on the highest Ray Tracing preset. This lead me to believe the card was running to fast under normal loads and would become unstable. My fix was dropping the core clock in MSI Afterburner to -110 MHz. Have a friend that got a 3080 in his rig and have the sort of same problem.
The thing is that it always shuts down the PC and reboots instantly.
Tried reseating the RAM,s and at first that seemed to work. He said they felt kind of loose.
But the problem has appeared again sadly.
I know he have had problems with the card before and the solution is to underclock/undervolt it.
But maby the "maximum performance" is the way to go?
We tried benchmarking (3DMark) to test out and try to fabricate a shutdown/reboot.
He managed sometimes to get a shutdown but it seems to crash less (?!) somehow in benchmark than in games?
Altho if he runs the same benchmark several times he gets different results, and not a small difference either.
Everything feels "off" and "odd" of the way it behaves.
And when hearing/seeing that some have the sort of same problems with the 40 series, may it be that Nvidia have a few problems they cannot seem to sort out?

This is some fucked up bios or voltage controller issue with the 4090. My 4090 Strix has the same issue and I’ve seen a lot of similiars posts on the internet with the exact same problem. The card crashes in idle, during loading screen/custcene or after closing the game. It just loses the stability after going from load into idle. Makes no fucking sense how this works when the card can run maxed out control with RT while drawing 450W for the whole day with no issue but once the cutscene plays or you leave the game the card just fucking dies and bsods the entire PC. Setting the „prefer maximum performance” in Nvidia panel seems to fix this because core clock stays locked and so does the PCIE x16 4.0 but this makes the card draw 50-70W when it’s absolutely unnecessary. I will try contact ASUS support maybe there is a bios update or something that fixes this. If not I’ll just sell this card and go back to my perfectly fine and stable 3090. Similiarly stupid issues like on AMDs 5700XT
