Americans vastly overestimate how famous American football players are. It's not just Japan that doesn't know these guys, basically no one outside of the US knows them.
I live in Japan and I think Japan is the ONLY other country that cares about “American Football” lol so many dudes have tried to talk to me about football but idk shit about it haha

I remember watching offensive linemen from the NFL try sumo in the 1980's as it was on television. Two guys from the Pittsburgh Steelers went over to Japan and did surprisingly well. My college football team was teaching the offensive line sumo techniques when we would try out. Sumo is amazing!
Arashio stable is super popular for its huge windows! plus, the brothers Wakatakakage and Wakamotoharu are top-notch! To have a meal with them is quite an honor, but to then ignore them and banter among themselves is... less than ideal
It's kind of sad/disrespectful even if they don't know who these guys are. They should at least ask some questions. But to not know how popular/good they are is understandable, nobody who doesn't make an effort themselves to watch Sumo outside of Japan gets any coverage of it. It's the same with American Football over here in Europe/Switzerland, people literally only know Tom Brady. American Football is just not a thing outside the US. People who are hockey or basketball fans know the NHL and NBA players. Hockey is high level in Europe so they mainly watch their national league, but all basketball fans watch the NBA. With the NFL people usually know some of the teams, due to hip hop clothes style and some people do watch the Super Bowl, the MLB is even less popular nobody knows any player, but maybe Babe Ruth as a reference from movies, and a lot of people who wear the Yankees or Dodgers cap don't even know those are baseball teams, they often think those are just cool clothes rappers wear.
I find it really interesting how Seth got into sumo from martial arts and still stays so enthusiastic about it without being super into professional sumo

There's a similar traditional sport in Switzerland called Schwingen. It's interesting how almost every culture developed some form of wrestling completely independent from each other.

Hananda does play for Colorado State. He also won the Heavyweight World Sumo Championship in Alabama in 2022. Against a guy, Onosato, who is now already near the top in the pros.
I didn't even realize there was a World Championship, I started watching the Japanese tournaments, since they began broadcasting them on Eurosport, but I'm pretty sure there's zero coverage of the World Championship over here in Europe.

It's a bit of a different vibe cause they're not pro athletes but at the same time they seem a lot more interested in actually learning about the sumo lifestyle. It's very hard to beat any professional martial artist at his discipline, especially if you don't even have the weight advantage, as it is the case against sumotori.
I believe Akebono, who died recently, but reached the highest rank of Yokozuna, started as a high school football player in Hawaii. It didn't hurt that he ended up being 6'8" tall and roughly 600 lbs.
Akebono is the only Sumotori who kind of made it into main stream over here in Europe, because they used to show the K-1 Grand Prix tournaments on Eurosport. Sadly he was far from his prime by then.

Every year in a rural town in Japan, a historic tournament sees kids, amateurs, professionals, and amateurs wrestling against professionals. Maybe Sensei will get to participate.
BTW. When you watched Hidetora Hanada's highlights, those were from the CFL Combine he attended a few years ago. And Canadian Football is different in a sense that there's a yard of free space between players before the snap. So yeah, it was a familiar way to initiate the contact for Hanada.
This just showcases how important Adaptation to differences are. Each activity whether it's a Martial Art or a Sport requires a completely different Skill set even if similar concepts are present. I've played many different Sports and have trained in various Martial Arts briefly. What I've learned is that certain principles are fluid throughout. The Truth of Professional Sports and Fighting today even in the Military is Specialization. As a Guy who's a Generalist meaning that I'm a higher level jack of all trades whether academically or physically, I'm good @ a lot of things and maybe great @ one or two things possibly. 🤷🤷 I say all of this because people so quickly praise those @ the highest levels who are seen doing specific tasks. Guys who can do multiple things like a LeBron James in capacity should be valued highly as well.
I've competed in both, and while the skillsets look similar, they are completely different. They do have similar underlying principles, but the techniques are very different.
Wakatakakagi is back in the upper ranks and some what lighter than most sumo wrestlers. He had knee surgery and in Sumo you keep falling in rank from Sekiwake even when injured. He fell all the way to the unpaid ranks and did well in the July tournament.
Sumo wrestlers, known as sekitori for the 2 best divisions, are absolute athletes and powerhouse. And the waka brothers here, despite strong of course are not considered as monsters in term of pushing.

It's very hard to beat any professional martial artist at his discipline, especially if you don't even have the weight advantage, as it is the case against sumotori.
I believe Akebono, who died recently, but reached the highest rank of Yokozuna, started as a high school football player in Hawaii. It didn't hurt that he ended up being 6'8" tall and roughly 600 lbs.
Akebono is the only Sumotori who kind of made it into main stream over here in Europe, because they used to show the K-1 Grand Prix tournaments on Eurosport. Sadly he was far from his prime by then.

Every year in a rural town in Japan, a historic tournament sees kids, amateurs, professionals, and amateurs wrestling against professionals. Maybe Sensei will get to participate.
BTW. When you watched Hidetora Hanada's highlights, those were from the CFL Combine he attended a few years ago. And Canadian Football is different in a sense that there's a yard of free space between players before the snap. So yeah, it was a familiar way to initiate the contact for Hanada.
This just showcases how important Adaptation to differences are. Each activity whether it's a Martial Art or a Sport requires a completely different Skill set even if similar concepts are present. I've played many different Sports and have trained in various Martial Arts briefly. What I've learned is that certain principles are fluid throughout. The Truth of Professional Sports and Fighting today even in the Military is Specialization. As a Guy who's a Generalist meaning that I'm a higher level jack of all trades whether academically or physically, I'm good @ a lot of things and maybe great @ one or two things possibly. 🤷🤷 I say all of this because people so quickly praise those @ the highest levels who are seen doing specific tasks. Guys who can do multiple things like a LeBron James in capacity should be valued highly as well.

I've competed in both, and while the skillsets look similar, they are completely different. They do have similar underlying principles, but the techniques are very different.

Wakatakakagi is back in the upper ranks and some what lighter than most sumo wrestlers. He had knee surgery and in Sumo you keep falling in rank from Sekiwake even when injured. He fell all the way to the unpaid ranks and did well in the July tournament.

The football to yokozuna pipeline is well established. Both Akebono and Musashimaru got discovered that way.
Sumo wrestlers, known as sekitori for the 2 best divisions, are absolute athletes and powerhouse. And the waka brothers here, despite strong of course are not considered as monsters in term of pushing.
